Ethanol works fine, so probably strong moonshine would work too. Methanol might work OK (but you have to understand the dangers). Various solvents like turpentine or white spirit can dissolve flux, but they can also damage the components (like remove resistive coating from resistors)

You know what i've bought a number of tweezers and i would describe a number of them as "good" but i'm still using the first real ones i bought many years ago just the cheapest, i'm just so used to the feel that i hesitate to replace them. They're looking pretty manky by now though, like i've been able to keep the working area of the tips at the very end largely in shape, but otherwise, oof. I look at them and think "i should throw them away" but then they're also the first ones i grab to use every single time. I'm also hesitant to replace my old meter that i've had for 15 years. It's got continuity buzzer (unlatched, fast) on 200 Ohm scale, which is something i absolutely love, there's barely any voltage and forced current so tiny i'm not terribly afraid to knock out modern semiconductors when using that. Diode mode tends to be much more harsh, being able to actually light up LEDs. Though being a Mastech it's just a tad closer to professional tools than outright cheap stuff, it's also seen some unsightly abuse by its previous owner. Thermal cam is i feel a silly expense, like, there's so many other techniques. Cold spray, iso spray, flux vape, hand, cheek, i mean sure you can put it to decent use, but it's not anyhow critical. The most critical thing and one i've been grappling with the hardest is workspace organisation for the tools that you already have. Also i've seen someone from another trade do a tablet repair just recently and they have struggled because they didn't have precision screwdrivers, nearly failed on that account. Oof. So that's definitely something not to forget, alongside pry tools and such. I also absolutely love throwing things on the bed of my 3D printer to unglue things, among numerous other nice uses for the machine, so some sort of flat heating device like that may be well advised. I don't think 3D printer is particularly useful for electronics repair, though it sometimes is, but it's also a giant commitment on the skill and effort fronts that i don't think is good for every repairman, like you'll spend time repairing that piece of shit regularly, so if that's what you live for, sure, but otherwise it can be more trouble than it's worth. One thing i absolutely would love to have and don't have yet is a scope. Well i mean i have a JYE toy one but it's hardly enough. Was tempted by Fnirsi but ooooof, such a janky tool. Next up are Owon and Hantek, they both seem adequate enough. Perhaps it's not a thing you need much with laptops or phones, but i really do something else, including analogue gear, audio, classic computers (8/16-bit), that this is actually a thing that is super helpful, plus for reverse engineering stuff. With classic computers and various retrofits into them, a 3D printer is also more useful, it can spit out key stems for the keyboard, brackets and fascias to install storage and video conversions, these sorts of things.

What thermal cam did you get for £50?

@@fadetonoir6152 It's an eBay purchase and a low resolution of 8x8, but have payed for itself. You can see on this YT (my one) that I use it with some of the repairs. It's more like a module with a micro USB connector and a display, than a proper cam to be true :).

not always, some linear power supplies have short circuit protection also

They're fundamentally going to have small but nonzero ripple. Any form of rectification creates switching noise thus ripple, you're necessarily going to have that on your secondary, and there's only so much noise rejection any circuit, analogue or otherwise, is going to provide, there is always a path for a little of it to get coupled over, though for a linear regulator, that's going to be like 60-80db down, really little ripple comes through ideally. Plus the regulation noise which can also imprint on the ripple rating.
