that primer holds back rust really good. The only thing to know is you need to let it dry for a very long time like about a month then recoat the primer with urethane primer before putting on automotive paint. If you dont do that you may have problems with fisheyes or wrinkling of the automotive paint.
@lonewolftech2 жыл бұрын

What about an in-line dryer to dry the compressor air and filter oil out. What pressure are you regulating it to.

Nice job. My only comment would be you might have gone a bit heavy on the first primer coat. The first coat needs some restraint and should really only be a very light mist - what they call a tack coat. After 7 min or so you can do a little heavier second coat.

Nice video i feel like once metal gets rusty it’s never the same again no matter how clean it looks. Rusty metal primer probably is a good idea if rustoleum makes it you’d think it’d be something they do right. Never tried rustoleum in the regular cans but as far as the spray cans the rustoleum regular primer and filler primer spray cans from Home Depot worked surprisingly well for me and only $7 and 9$ each. The filler primer dries instantly pretty much and took metallic sherwin Williams atx auto paint really well and really stuck to the metal underneath compared to some Upol primer that chipped off easily. The regular rustoleum primer was good too just needs to dry for at least 2 days.

If you use an airless/electric sprayer like a graco 390pc you don’t have to cut it at all. I’ve sprayed tons of different paint only thing I’ve ever done is add water on top to keep some from drying in the bucket as I spray.

Being that no bodywork was done, no dents pulled or filled, etc, I would argue that after the sanding it would look really good with just a satin UV clearcoat and nothing else. Also, why use the red rusty metal primer and not just the Rustoleum white metal primer since this metal looks really clean?

I wish they would always print "oil based paint" on the front like the gloss black I'm going to use on my wrought iron railings. I didn't realize it and tried for just a second to clean the brush in the sink. Not a big deal, but it seems like something all oil based paints would show. Guess I should have known or checked, but what with all the drinking, heavy drug use, and merriment I neglected to take that step. Oh well, that's life!

Just curious why did you use a primer for heavily rusted metal on a parts with little to no rust. Was under the impression that rusted metal was needed for adhesion similar to Por 15.
@grapplergirl102 жыл бұрын
I wondered the same, but I recently took most of a poor paint job off of, and wire brushed 99% of the rust off of an antique metal sewing machine table base. I foam brushed on this primer (chose it due to its color and feel for this specific project) and did have a little trouble with it sticking on mostly smooth metal on the first coat, but by doing a thin coat twice, it stuck great with nothing coming off while handling or wiping it clean. Black paint looks great over it, and I’m able to leave a few protected but “rusty looking” places peeking through the paint all while keeping it protected for another century.
@robertvega41364 жыл бұрын
would you recommend this over POR 15? i'm about to paint the whole bottom of a car

FWIW I did rustolem rusty metal primer with a brush on the underside of my 78 Fairmont wagon about 8:years ago and top coated that with hammer tone rustoleum. It came out awesome. My experience with por 15 is that is encapsulates rust but it doesn’t really stop it and the cost vs value is not so good. I’ve also been able to go back and peel it off of stuff I had used it on. Fluid film or something like that works awesome as well for persevering an undercarriage.
