Michael Jackson was a one of a kind amazing singer. His style was so cool. He can never be replaced.

Interesting to see that his more "soulful" sounding vibrato as a kid did carry into the more soulful parts of his vibrato as an adult. Though decreased in size, he can vacillate between the two- traditional and soul sounding. I've heard some of his vocal warm up recordings before and his range, low to high, is insane. Ridiculous talent! Gives you goosebumps! He was the King for a reason!

He had the gift of a golden voice even at a young age.

This is my analysis of his singing from off the wall to invincible! I believe Michael used his voice as an instrument. The pitch he would sing in had to match the beat and melody of song therefore creating one sound He wouldn’t over sing or under sing, just gave enough to go with that particular song to flow as one sound! If you go back and listen to his songs and focus on the beat then listen to his voice you’ll see how he’s mirroring the melody of each particular song

Hey Fil. As an adult Michael’s voice was deeper than his public voice. My dad did work for his aunt. We got to meet Michael a couple times. He was a normal guy at the time. This was before the nose thing. I don’t know if that had an affect on his voice. His voice was deeper than my brother’s. Just sounded like a regular guy. Not prissy or anything like that. He showed his aunt a lot of love and respect until her death. Back then we had no internet, cells and didn’t carry cameras everywhere. Which surprisingly makes me appreciate it more. My memories of those times are my own. No one can use a photo or recording out of context. Michael had a beautiful voice. No matter what people thought of him, he had talent. Huge talent. Thanks for reminding me of better times Fil.

Michael was a unique human being. He had great energy and charisma. I wonder if his shyness caused him to speak softer and higher than his normal speaking voice. Very interesting analysis.

Michael was naturally curious, creative by nature, and used his gift of love for mankind.

That is sooo amazing; "riffing/vibrato" at 11 years old, Fil! I saw the Jackson 5, back in the day, as a kid. Their performance was so much fun!

Arguably the finest vocalist ever. He has a lot of competition of course, not so much since the mid 90's, but where he really steps away from crowd, is his talent as a whole package. The dancing, performing in general, the attention to detail, the originality, how he came up with his music, the way he controlled a crowd, the effect he had on people....head and shoulders above even the very best. Incredible guy, we didn't deserve him, look at the way we treated him.

That was great. He sang like an adult when he was a kid, just amazing tone phrasing and a range only a kid would have. I'm biased because 70s top trumps 1980s.

Loved this video! ❤️ I’ve always been a huge fan of Michael and it was wonderful to hear/see his isolated vocals! His performance of “Who’s Loving You” has always blown my mind - absolutely incredible for an 11-year-old to have that kind of quality and technique!

Really enjoyed this analysis, Fil. Thank you. MJ was such a brilliant dancer in his adulthood that his voice is often overlooked and sometimes even mocked (because of his unique stylization) - it’s therefore great to see his singing being acknowledged. And he was a gifted singer both as a child and as an adult. There’s a really good book on his singing titled! “Man in the Music: The Creative Life and Work of Michael Jackson,” which goes into detail about the production of each of his songs and theres some really excellent insights about his singing from the people, who worked with him. Things such as how he would do his own backing tracks and harmonies and how he would be able to get the pitch and tones perfect on each such successive take. For other singers, for e.g, the producers would do that in the studio during mixing, however, MJ would do it himself, by singing the tracks again and again. Quincy Jones has said of MJ, that because he was so strong and and confident technically, he could let his creativity loose within those parameters. Best combination of art and craft. Regarding his childhood ability, I think his rendition of “Ain’t No Sunshine,” is one of the best ito showing off his range. MJ was a belter, and his phrasing and interpretation of this song at just 13 yrs old is quite extraordinary. He really puts his own spin on it. As regards his adult voice, I’m really not sure whether he spoke with his natural voice. And whether that voice was so high. The reason is there’s an interview somewhere on YT featuring Bruce Swedien, the sound engineer, who worked with MJ on various projects and recordings. He talks about how he once telephoned Michael, and that MJ responded with a much lower and deeper voice. When he queried it and asked Michael, why he did not speak that way all the time, MJ said, “I don’t like it down there.” Lastly, I just want to say that MJ worked/works hard on his craft. He practiced over and over, to make it look natural. Even as a child star, he would go sit with the other Motown stars, and try to learn from them. Would absorb everything like a sponge. When his voice was breaking or starting to, he realised his voice would change and he then worked on how to incorporate that. In that regard, he was was influenced by the BeeGees and their use of falsetto. (Barry Gibb talks about those times with MJ and how they continued to remain friends in subsequent years. It was at this time that MJ then stated introducing the yips, hee-hees, and shamons etc to his music - he was branching out his vocal sound, making it unique. He therefore worked on his voice, such that even though he could no longer be the belter of years gone by, he could still craft his own, unique sound.

I'm always touched by how enthusiasticly Fil analyzes vocalists. Very well done.

Michael Jackson as a kid was out of this world. I loved his work with the J5.

There have been a number of people from those who knew Michael Jackson very personally and even some others that had chance encounters with him that have said that his public voice (i.e. high pitched) that he spoke as an adult was fake and that his real speaking voice was noticeably lower. This was said by people like Quincy Jones, film director Spike Lee, singer Akon and rapper The Game. The Game didn't really know Michael well but he did speak to him on the phone once and said that his voice was much lower than how he spoke in public. He said that Michael's voice was "low key deep" but "you could still tell it was Michael Jackson". So Michael Jackson's real voice was not actually high pitched. With this in mind it would be most interesting to analyze the one song Michael Jackson did were he has a completely different and noticeably deeper singer voice and that's "2000 Watts" from the Invincible album. He never sang another song that way ever in his whole career! It makes it the most unique song in Michael Jackson's entire discography! Please consider doing a video highlighting that track and analyzing it, Fil!

With allll of his personal life and mental issues, it doesn't negate the fact that he was one of the greatest singers of all time. This was a great analysis, thanks

Michael started singing with his mother. I suspect she's the one that influenced the more dramatic vibrato he used when he was younger, along with artists that he admired at different stages of his life. I don't believe any of his adult voice was an accident - he'd have worked to have it sound exactly the way he wanted and not necessarily settled for what might have come naturally. He had lots of singing lessons and coaching. Still reckon you can do an addendum and show why the Cascio tracks are fake. The vibrato was the dead give-away and should show up beautifully.

Great video Fil. I do wish you had analyzed Who's Lovin You to the very end, because that final high note is even more out of this world! God truly blessed us with Michael. Not only as an entertainer, but a humanitarian.

Interesting analysis Fil.Apparently Michael Jackson's voice was deeper than he let on. I had heard his voice under the influence of anesthesia drugs (allegedly) on a tv program released after his death ,and his voice was probably a whole octave lower. I would have said it was comparable to any guy on the street, if that's the correct term to use! Always nostalgic to hear that voice though . Rest in peace Michael. 🦋

People who knew him well said that in private, he spoke with a much lower voice as an adult. I remember taking a Speech Therapy class while doing my Linguistics Master in the U.S., and our prof pointed out that psychology has a lot to do with how you use your voice. He was the perfect example of someone who didn't accept becoming an adult, and this is what we see here. He _could_ speak much lower, but his "idol" and he even said that, plus all his nasal plastic surgery, plus the name of his ranch, Neverland, was Peter Pan from the old Disney movies. He never had a childhood, in addition to having an abusive father all his life. Notice how his other much less known brothers have a much lower and normal tone of voice. It was all down to his psychological makeup and traumatic background. Poor guy.

Loved this video and that you have highlighted his incredible talent as a vocalist. I know MJ said his voice came naturally, however this often means people overlook just how hard he worked. Yes he was incredibly talented but also worked incredibly hard. MJ also thought about all the small details that went into every aspect of his work. So I wonder if some of the vocal inflections you pointed out were intentional. If only we had decent journalists back in the day to ask him good questions about his artistry instead of focusing on all the sensationalised drama.

I would like the same analysis done with LeAnn Rimes. She had a really clear and strong voice as a teenager and there is video of her singing the same song as an adult. She is attributed as singing the most popular song of all time, but someone else got the Grammy for the Con Air soundtrack.

Smokey Robinson thought it was a joke that an 11 yr. old was going to attempt to cover his song. SR came to the recording and was shocked by MJ's ability to emote to a song that is of such a mature content for an 11 yr old, yet not having an understanding of the depth of pain a man would feel. Robinson said he was shocked and frankly, I like MJ's cover better than Smokey's. An 11 yr. old, out singing SR? Impressive!

I remember listening to another analysis on Michael Jackson's voice and that analysis said that his voice was spent in his early 20s because of how much he had performed as a child and as teenager. And therefore, he only sang in a very restricted register. I don't know, I'm no expert.
