A Retrospective Review of Spirit: Stallion of the Cimaron

Even when Spirit isn't acting like a horse, his movement and bodylanguage is 100% horse-like. Seriously, the most "anatomically" wrong thing I noticed in the film was Spirit lapping water like a dog instead of slurping it

I always cringe when it comes to the nod at the end, because why would a horse understand what that nod means, let alone nod back?? but other than that, all the other behaviours are extremely horsey, even to the point of actual horse expressions such as pinning ears, swishing tail, posture, etc.

@@pogpogpog7507 not really, but you have to think: spirit is intelligent- even for a horse- and hes spend almost an entire year living among humans- we can see the progression from late spring/early summer in the wilds and at the fort and it turns fall at the camp and winter at the train. Spirit is seen to recover and the end comes once again in spring- so I wouldn't be surprised if spirit learned a few human mannerisms at that point.

I don't know why Spirit doesn't get more recognition. I can't even hear a single song from that movie without getting emotional and nostalgic. It a nice heartfelt movie, that's actually one of the few western themed cartoons. And the main character doesn't even have to *_speak_* for majority of the movie, but we know exactly what he's feeling. This movie actually birthed my young sisters deep love of horses. And honestly it pulls far more emotions from me than any DreamWorks movie since. Wish they could make animated films with this kind of soul again.

Overall, good review, I agree that Spirit is very underrated jam and to this day, remains as one of the most powerful animated movies ever. I, for one, prefer it to even Lion King. But I think you are underestimating the character of Rain and the whole 'romance' plot line that is an essential element to the story. Rain, was the mare of Little Creek. Sure, she did not get a lot of screen time, but she was one of the most important characters. Without her, Little Creek and Spirit would not have come together. Think about it... when brought in the Lakota village, Spirit still continued being hostile towards the young Native. It took only Rain to 'teach him manners' and show him a human world from a different perspective. Unlike the cavalry horses, Rain and her fellow Lakota horses, (even though not wild) were not abused and treated as slaves, they had freedom as well as deep bonds with their humans. It was because of Rain, Spirit's heart slowly began to split in two ways. When Little Creek sets him free for the first time around, he begins to hesitate because of his love for Rain and his developing friendship towards Little Creek, that was mostly Rain's doing. She taught him that not all humans were bad and not all domesticated horses were abused. Because of his affections towards Little Creek's paint mare, Spirit learned to balance his wild, stubborn and hostile nature when it came to humans as a whole. Also, she was a noble character. Rain's loyalty and bravery is highlighted when she charges into the battle (despite Spirit's objections) and takes a shot for Little Creek in order to protect him. Most people somehow forget her fearless action in the movie and that always irritated me. Before Spirit rushed in to rescue Little Creek from the Colonel's gun, it was Rain, who took a bullet for him first. I even doubt Spirit would have participated in that chaotic frenzy had it not been for Rain racing down there to help Little Creek. I found her to be a wonderful character, and she brought a lot to the story in subtle ways. That's mostly why her character gets overlooked. But, the movie is told from Spirit's point of view, so obviously we didn't have much time to explore Rain's character. Yet we still learned a lot about her personality from everything that was shown in the movie. That's why I think the writers and producers of this movie were incredibly talented, they delivered a lot of things very clearly with subtleness. So no... I'm afraid I have to disagree when it comes to Rain and the romance part of the film. Without her, the story would've taken a completely different route. She was an essential part in Spirit's personal growth and journey. P.S I found nothing 'cringy' about the romantic scenes. I mean, it's the same as Simba and Nala falling in love or Bambi and Faline prancing around the fields. In fact, this romance seemed more realistic, because we get to see the time passing, and the two characters slowly understanding each other's views and falling for one another, rather than just meeting, singing a song and BAM they're in love. cough, cough...Simba and Nala. cough, cough Bambi and Faline.

When people don't understand something they just jump to hate. I finf that many people don't realise that Spirit spent an year away from his family and his romance wasn't a short one but instead a relationship that continued for the whole autumn. You know that from Spirit's mane growing and the changing seasons. We started out in spring, birth (the little twin foals), beauty, then until they reach the army's base it gets to summer, it's scorching hot and hard for any life to bare it, which presents an even bigger challange for the character. Then there is the classical sad metaphor of the winter sadness, hoplessnes, and then it gets to love and birth again ending the circle composition of this masterpiece.

As my favorite movie of ALL TIME I have been watching Spirit almost every month since I was literally in diapers. My mom used to put me in front of this movie as an infant to get me to stop crying. It was the reason why "horsie" was my second word ever after "mama". Its what started my love of cartoons, drawing, music production, and animation. Im now a newlyfound adult going into animation. I am who i am because of this movie. When I was at my lowest point in life a few years ago and I decided to end my life and watch Spirit one last time. When Sound the Bugle came on it made me cry and realize why i couldnt do it. Im alive in part to this movie......so thank you for this video.

I watched this movie countless times as a kid, so many that my older sister still hates it to this day (as I generally chose it for long car rides when she was a captive audience). Then, I loved the action and the speed and the excitement the movie conveyed. Plus, what kid doesn't love seeing a train slide and crash down a mountain? I also credit this movie with inspiring my interest in Bryan Adam's music. However, revisiting this movie was a completely different story for me. I recently watched it for the first time in probably 10 years, and after all those years of school and AP English classes, I have a much deeper understanding of symbolism and meaning, and I have been fascinated with the use of storytelling in cinema. You can say I'm crazy, but after rewatching Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron, I think this may be my favorite animated movie of all time...there...I said it. If Shrek did not win the first Academy Award for Best Animated Feature the year this was released, I would hope that this movie earned it. Spirit's storytelling and meaning is so much deeper than I had ever realized. For an 83 minute film, it does its job better than anyone at DreamWorks or even Disney could have expected it to. Being able to create such a strong emotional connection between the audience and a unspeaking (except for thoughts narrated over some scenes) is an impressive feat to begin with. I bawled my eyes out at the waterfall scene when I rewatched it. *Spoilers* One detail that goes highly unnoticed is the camerawork on Rain when she is lying on the shore, dying. This scene takes place after her romance scene with Spirit, and if you notice as she's lying on the ground, the camera is focused on her belly, not her face, not Spirit's, her belly. Why? Because she is pregnant. Sure, it is showing her heavy breathing as well, but there is obviously some emphasis on the size of her belly as well. Spirit lies with her until nightfall, staying by her side to comfort her in her dying hours, when he is forcefully taken away by the horse wranglers, seeing her for what he is certain will be the last time, and the audience is led to believe it too, until Little Creek shows up to help her. This scene leads to Spirit's scene on the train and the fantastically emotional song, "Sound the Bugle Now," plays, helping the audience relate to Spirit's brokenness, which he has never felt before, always being such an unbroken Spirit, hence the name Little Creek gives him at the end of the movie (yes, the audience never has a name for him until the end of the movie, when he has rightfully earned it, as even the colonel would agree). Being someone who has gone through 4 years of high school and 1 year of college, I have felt that sense of emotional brokenness and hopelessness, which made me relate to Spirit even more...and cry even more, too. I'll be the first to admit that I'm a pretty sensitive guy, this isn't the first time I've cried at a movie, nor an animated movie at that, but I have never been able to sympathize with an animated character or film as much as Spirit. This movie is truly an under appreciated masterpiece from the early days of DreamWorks when they were challenging the animated film norms put into place by Disney (which I am, btw, a HUGE fan of). But DreamWorks would handle topics and subjects that were beyond what Disney would have been comfortable dealing with in their animated films. My last point builds on this fact. I am also a huge history buff, and I am especially a fan of American History and the Civil War period. Native Americans in the United States have been treated terribly by the U.S. government and army throughout its history. Even to this day, conflicts arise between Native American tribes and the U.S. government. Just look at the South Dakota pipeline issue on Native American land in recent years. This is an issue that shouldn't even be discussed, it should just be resolved and the government should leave the Native tribes alone, as they have already had so much taken from them by the United States government for more than a century and a half. There was practically a genocide on the native people in the west In order to take land and "civilize" the west through "Manifest Destiny." As Americans, we are used to seeing the U.S. army of the middle 19th century, especially the cavalry, idolized and glorified in great movies such as Gettysburg and Glory, but we don't often see them antagonized in cinema except in rare cases like Dances With Wolves. In my opinion, Spirit does a great job of capturing the Native American perspective of the conflict with the imposing settlers and armies. I am not Native American, so I cannot speak for them on how well their struggle to preserve their culture and way of life was portrayed in this movie; however, I feel that the opening scenes of Spirit growing up do a wonderful job of conveying the beauty of the west as it was before the settlers came. Seeing the wild horses (which, I know, were brought by the Spanish), the herds of buffalo, and the ever-symbolic flying bald eagle on the beautifully colorful and magnificent landscapes of the film really captures the Spirit of the west. We all know that the bald eagle is the national bird of the United States and it stands as a symbol of freedom to this day, and that is one of the main motifs of this film. The horses themselves symbolize the Native Americans, living with the land, not ruling it. There's a reason the Lakota village lies on green grass and the army fort lies on dry, desert ground. There's a reason the Lakota horses have a blue circle painted around their eye besides the fact that the Lakota are marking them as their own. The paint helps the audience identify those horses in other scenes like on the train. The army horses have saddles and bridles because they have been forcefully broken by the U.S. Cavalry and have lost their freedom, much like how the "civilization" the U.S. wanted to impose upon the Native Americans would have been restricting like a bridle. I could go on and on and on about the symbolism and meaning of this film as a whole, but still the most important line in the whole movie is in the opening narration: "They say the mustang is the spirit of the west. Whether that west was won or lost in the end, you'll have to decide for yourself." If you ask me, that west was lost. The west where nature ruled and the Native American tribes could live in harmony with the land was lost, it was taken by the United States, destroyed, and replaced with a west that has been industrialized and economized to better support the growing nation. I'm not saying that the United States is evil, I'm a proud American and Kansan, yes I live on that very land, those Great Plains where the old west was, but I would be a liar if I claimed that what this country did to the Native Americans was right or good. As for what you believe, well, you'll have to decide for yourself.

I think what's so beautiful about this movie is what a variety of emotion it conveys without any language. For example, the horrified look on Spirit's face when he comes to the US cavalry post and sees all the horses walking in line. The other horses in the train cart hopefully looking to Spirit as a leader and then realizing he's been broken. Countless other examples. It really puts it on the viewer to understand the characters and their feelings, and it makes it that much more beautiful and artistic.

I've traveled all over the world and even lived in countries such as Singapore and Switzerland for months to even years, yet despite loving every culture and understanding how cruel american history can be, I think in my heart the west will always be my home. Too this day I've rarely meet someone from the west regardless of race, gender, sexuality, anything, that didn't recognize that shit has happened, but also saw all the good in it as well. Everything about this movie reminds me that the wild west is built on a lot of bad, but a lot of good and strong willed people and animals! Just like he said I meet few here who aren't stubborn and have a strong sense of justice, freedom, and are all respectful of nature and animals, something I think is admirable.

Excellent analysis. I so agree with your comment that this was Dreamworks' last movie where they made a compelling and artistic story and were so experimental about animation. It says something about the movie going audience that they did not appreciate this movie but prefer their animation to be more comedic, cynical and full of slapstick gags for kids - so Dreamworks focused on those kinds of movies. I think the "How to Train Your Dragon" series was a step back in the original direction, but I am not sure if Dreamworks will ever return back to their experimental roots.

Watching this 16 years later, I realize much of the imagery in the movie formed my love for the US west, it's National Parks, and my passion for ecology. This film showed what it meant to be free, to be wild, to see that true freedom and happiness comes from being part of nature rather than going against it. Even as the west became civilized, it is at least somewhat encouraging to see that we as humans had enough foresight to preserve some of that freedom. I'm not sure many see the film in this way, but as a young child, you want Spirit and his herd, and Little Creek to exist forever in that place, so that someday, you yourself could go there. As you grow older, reality sets in, and you come see that the world in Spirit may never be possible again, but at least you have that world in film to call back upon for a glimpse at that freedom. Further points: In the track "I Will Always Return", is likely taken thematically as "Spirit will always reunite with his herd and be part of that world". However, I think it can be taken further to explain the dynamics of the environment. We see from abandoned cities or buildings, that left undisturbed, nature will take over from where humans interrupted the process. As such, "I Will Always Return" could be taken as "even as the west was civilized and Spirit most likely was then captured, eventually, nature will find a way to bring Spirit back, long after human civilization has be abandoned or destroyed." The environment may be different after all this time, but the forces of nature will always win.

Some Notes: music- "Can't take me" is less about "don't give a fuck" attitude and more about no matter how hard you try or what you do you will never own me, I'm free, and I will fight till the end. Which is a perfect representation for Spirit as an unbreakable force. The animation and CGI- This is one of the first serious attempts to unite traditional animation and CGI- clearly it was not seamless in many aspects but the union of the two styles really helped the animators play with camera work. The CGI models provided a basic outline for artist in many scenes where the camera spins or pans around a character. Horses are notoriously hard to animate especially with their strides so there's no doubt in my mind layering 2D art over 3D models helped keep proportions and made the film more realistic than classic animation styles. Romance- Rain, the female horse, actually played a significant roll in normalizing people for Spirit. He had no ties to the tribal village after his first experience with humans - it was through her affections that he learned to be docile and even became friends with Little Creek. Her assumed death scene and his recapturing broke Spirits heart but being as he is the embodiment of fighting spirit - he mustard up the strength to fight again, reenforcing the "you can't take me" attitude. Lastly Spirits Personality: Spirits original storyline was supposed to follow in lock step to black beauty and the typical sad horse film, however to make it light hearted they through some spunk into their character, a saving grace for the film as without the ability to speak outright, it's spirits attitude that captures the watcher. The young playful scenes like at the corral were fun but also displayed just how non serious and young Spirit was. It helped with major character development later on as he becomes more serious while still keeping his spark of lively energy alive.

That scene where his tongue got stuck to the icicle and he just broke off the icicle and left nonchalantly had me chuckling. It also shows that he won't let anything hold him back even when he's young.

Why does it have to be three legged tho
@LostinYTblackhole3 жыл бұрын
@@erikperhs_ idk I’ve always found a special bond between a dog that will likely be overlooked, such as an elderly, birth defect, or mis behaved dog. That, and I think the concept of having a dog with such a large hurdle in life, and the ability to live life to the fullest and always be happy and playful will keep me happy, and motivated to be more like a dog

I agree with the 8/10 rating, but for me it will always be 10/10 masterpiece. I literally love everything about this movie. Fell in lovee with it when I was a child, and just recently fell in love with it all over again. Probably my favourite animated movie, right next to Atlantis and The silent voice.

*Sound the Beagle* is hands-down my favorite song in the entire movie ever since I first watched it when I was little. All of the songs are legendary, but *Sound the Beagle* is the one that plays rent free in my mind 24/7, followed closely by *I Will Always Return* and *Here I Am.* Also can you guys BELIEVE this movie just turned 20 years old last month!!!!????

I hope others can relate to this - I mostly grew up at the foot of the Rockies in Montana on a reservation. The scenery and ambiance of the film really really strikes this indescribable spirit of the land and the history it holds and it makes it painfully beautiful to watch for someone who is far from that place. I love this movie

I honestly love the horse romance, I think it's adorable and the montage had arguably the best song in the whole movie. And it broke me as a child to see Spirit holding on to Rain even when the Colonel was pulling him away, saying that she wasn't going to survive

It’s funny to see the early scenes between spirit and little creek now that I have a horse of my own that I tamed down using pretty much the same “I’ll be your friend now and you just have to deal with it” tactic that he did.

I’m quite late to finding this video, but I love seeing these comments! I completely agree Spirit is such an underrated movie ;-; 😭❤️ It’s one of the reasons I believe I grew up wanting to become a musician AND a zoologist. Seeing my two passions of animals and music on screen (portrayed in an amazing, high-quality way) creates a masterpiece for me.

Somehow, I didn't get to grow up watching Spirit. I first heard of it when I was in high school and only first watched it a few years ago, at the ripe old age of 19. And I loved it. Simple as that. So yeah, I guess it doesn't necessarily take nostaliga to enjoy this movie. It was a good surprise for me. ... And then I found out about that Netflix show. "Spirit : Riding free". Ugh.
@django84513 жыл бұрын
You know they have a plan to release a new full-length film in theaters based on spirit free riding? I have a little hope that it will be good, but something tells me that the old Dreamworks is gone and we will get only cheap cash grab(

Spirit was the second coming of The Lion King for me. It filled the gap in me that The Lion King left behind. Something The Lion King 2 and the 2019 remake utterly failed to do so. This movie totally came as a surprise to me as I didn't intend to watch it at all. When I was younger, I visited a cousins house and he was watching this movie. So, I ended up watching it together with him. A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one. In some aspects, this movie was better than The Lion King in some like how as you literally don't need to understand a word they're saying to understand the story because they convey everything with expressions, movement and mannerism. I was pretty young back when I first watched it and my English skills wasn't as good back then as it's not my first language. But I still understood everything. And I don't really think Spirit not acting like a horse is really a bad thing. Majority of the important characters in the animated The Lion King didn't really act like animals most of the time and it was great and an all time classic. They acted more like animals in 2019 remake and it sucked. Also, Spirit acting like a human in a lot of situations actually makes him more relatable.

Equines can get extremely cocky and will even try alcohol if given the chance. Mustangs especially. My mother's mustang loved to mess with people. If anything but my mother or I tried to catch him they were in for a mental rollercoaster. He'd wait for them to get close enough for their hopes to get up and then prance a few yards away with his tail high in the air. He would repeat that until the person either gave up or got my mom. No he wasn't scared, he enjoyed it. He'd look happy the whole time and would even prance after someone that gave up. If they turned around to try and get him again it would start all over again.

A fun fact about the soundtrack, Bryan Adams was offered the chance to perform the song 'Danger Zone' for the original Top Gun, but declined to do so. Which is funny, because his songs plus Zimmer's 80s synth flourished on the music ended up REALLY reminding me of Top Gun's OST.

It's crazy to know/realize that as of next year, it'll have been 20 years since this came out. God, I feel so old and I'm only 26. You can call it lame and/or childish, but this movie will ALWAYS be one of my favorites. I was roughly 7 when my dad took me to see it. Obviously the movie’s great. Best one from my childhood, honestly. What really caught my attention though, was the music. Like HOLY 💩 that soundtrack/album is phenomenal, man. The timing for each song was perfect, every song had a sense of attitude without sounding heavy, and they were all written like they were chapters of a book. 19 years later and it still blows my mind. Hands all the way down, this is my favorite soundtrack/album of all time. If not for this, I wouldn’t have developed a love for music, let alone Rock and Metal.
