Let's Talk About Anxiety and Drug Addiction

How do Anxiety and Addiction go hand in hand? Well, there's certainly a relationship between the two. Some who experience anxiety are led into addiction as a way to cope.
Then, addiction can lead to anxiety problems. It's a complex issue but also one that is not often discussed or understood.
In an effort to break the stigma, Jenn shares her story of living with anxiety while also going through the addiction recovery process. Jenn also touches on what it's like to live with anxiety, and how she had used drugs to cover up the anxiety that had been following her around for so long.
Unchecked anxiety can be a huge stumbling block to recovery. When you're thinking about starting the process of drug and alcohol recovery, you're going to want to ensure that you work with treatment and/or mental health professionals that have a holistic view of your issues.
Mental health and addiction certainly go hand in hand.

I've had a generalized anxiety since I was a toddler. I suffer from severe stress and worry, since that time. I had my first panic attack in high school while I was driving. I started to use and abuse substances right out of high school. Now I have over five years clean, and I still have panic attacks to this day. I now work as a Peer Recovery Support Specialist and help others with my experience,strength and hope. I am so happy I stumbled across this video in my research the day it came out.

Thank you sooo much for making this video & sharing your story! I feel like the topic of anxiety co-accurring with addiction just is isn’t addressed very often...and oh my goodness I identified a lot with you!! Last year I was in a halfway house & I remember how terrified I was to talk to people I didn’t know in meetings, nevermind asking someone to be a sponsor. My anxiety felt like this huge obstacle and still can be..,even now, a year & 1/2 clean & sober. I am super grateful that I stumbled across this video tonight it was exactly what I needed to hear! 🙏💜💜

Hi Jennifer, I was really impressed at how Jennifer described her issues as well. Glad you could relate! Sometimes those issues like anxiety can really be huge stumbling blocks in early recovery. Glad you've identified it and are working through it with a sponsor. Keep going strong! - Susana

I love this video. I am an addictions therapist and have shown it to so many clients. And I suffered from GAD as well. She is so real and so is the interviewer. I have never commented on a video before but I love this too much to not

Pff,. My anxiety started when I esa 11 I was adicted to glue My father dos not know, and unfortunately he found me really high on glue, and he hit me really hard I i could not feel nothing, but the efect came later on, I'm adicted to cocaine and crack , si that shit aint shit , come see me I Will talk toy You about life, and I Will give You done advise
