Everybody was on the HAAS hype train, and it would’ve been awesome to see them at the top of the midfield. HAAS simply don’t have the infrastructure to keep up, so I wouldn’t expect them to move up beyond 9th.

@@rambo4916 very true, the midfield battle has gotten much better. HAAS however haven’t gotten a point since Imola, and have only scored 5 points since the opening race. Don’t get me wrong, that’s still better than last year, but I can already see HAAS falling off and becoming less competitive as the season progresses. Less wealthy teams like HAAS won’t benefit from the cost cap for a few years, which might be too long for Gene Haas to stay in the sport.

To the people saying it is pretty much his rookie season. Alonso was in a Minardi for his first season then was out of F1 for a year and then returned at Renault then performed instantly. Michael Schumacher, Senna, Hamilton, Lauda and Prost are all drivers who performed instantly as rookies or in Lauda and Prosts case was whenever they got a decent car. Latifi and Mazepin don't get sympathy so why should Mick. He has already gone over the crash budget. I really hope Mick pulls it together because he is a really nice person.

Another good rookie season example but for this season: Zhou Guanyu, is in his first year of F1, hasn't crashed a single time, is consistently getting better (although mad unlucky with reliability) and even outqualified highly experienced Bottas last race in Baku with a mega lap. thank you for being the first content creator to not bow down to him because of his last name. I have nothing against Mick but I am getting tired of everyone saying he's great and nothing is his fault. If he were anyone else Guenther would have him with one foot out of the door. He's not bad, he's not Mazepin, but he's not good either and likely doesn't belong in F1. At least not yet anyway. He speared Seb in the side, during an overtake attempt he had no business attempting but he's Mick so no penalty and Seb defended him. There are plenty of other "new" drivers that have been great though. So to hear those big channels utter his name in the same breathe as theirs is an insult to the new drivers who can drive. What really threw me over the edge was Seb coming to his defense. Anyone ANYONE else did what Mick did in that situation and they would have been penalized and beat up on Twitter for a week. Just ask Latifi. Mick is probably a great kid but he has shown us time and time again that he doesn't belong in F1. I think it's obvious that Mick is not doing a good job, but this discussion is always very one-sided. Of course it's Mick's fault if he crashes, but both Mick and Magnussen have lost a lot of practice time due to team mistakes or cars not working. This is especially bad for Mick as he always needed a bit more time to get used to a new car and now that he is under more pressure he misses practice sessions in Monaco and Baku, both difficult tracks that require a lot of confidence. Little training and high pressure (and rain) can add up quickly. This comment is not defending Mick's mistakes but if Steiner wants to talk about mistake, then he might should talk to the mechanics and so on too. Mick has to be able to handle this pressure, if he wants to be a F1 driver. I think, as soon as he gets his first points (a clean weekend would help) he will show much better results.

I think we should look at this season as mick's rookie season. I mean its a brand new car to addapt your driving style to and with mazepin not really being good he didnt really have a pace to try to achieve cause the only driver driving his car was mazepin. Now he has Magnussen who can teach him and set a goal to beat so I think mick will improve a lot this season.

Mick is just average. 0 poles and just 3 wins in 2 seasons in F2. He was a F2 champion just because consistency, not speed. And in F1 you need speed. And that's why he had that many crashes. He is drving over his limit because he was too slow comparing to Magnussen. He will stay in F1 because his surname.

I feel like Mick is in the same situation as Daniel. Daniel struggled his first year at Mclaren. Then new rege happened and he could be struggling with it. It could be the same thing with Mick. Or they just suck now. But with Mick’s junior career he has always taken time getting used to a new car and he usually struggled in his first year. But I do feel there were other drivers that deserved that Haas seat more than him. Anyway. If Mick doesn’t get any better. It really shows how absolutely horrendously terrible Mazepin was.

I say give Mick another season with the current car rules. Historically Mick hasn't come into his own until his second season in a given series, and since he's been behind the wheel of two completely different cars during his F1 stint, we very well could see him get much more consistent and less crashy later this season or possibly sometime next season.

When he was up against Mazepin, he was clearly faster, that's all he could do being in the back of the grid, so that's why everyone cut him some slack. You only ever need to be as fast as your teammate to do well, in the midfield at least. The only benefit of doubt I'm willing to give to Mick is that he was rapid on other series... After a learning year. With the new cars the learning year transitions to now. That does not bode well with the expected heights his father set, but if true it does bode well with his chances in F1, only in the midfield though.

Both Mick and Latifi are better drivers than their results may indicate IMHO. They've both had some unique challenges. Mick's name and Latifi's pay driver status have put them under extra scrutiny, they've both had to prove themselves in bottom quality cars while paired with a very talented teammate (there's been a very sharp change in people's view of Mick since Mazepin left). Latifi also has had to endure some very dark online hate after Abu Dhabi last year, which is going to be confidence shattering for anyone. Still, I think that even accounting for all that, it's clear that Latifi is just not up to snuff for F1. Still some hope for Mick, but doubtful he'll last past this season. Still I think they can both compete well in other racing series such as FE or Indy. Speculation is that this Sunday will be Latifi's last in F1, so I hope he can have a good race this time and leave the sport on a high note at his home track.

I think the pressure is a bit too much for Mick. Just imagine he has to uphold the Schumacher name, there are expectations of him that have nothing to do with him and last year he was riding in something that shouldn't even be considered an f1 car. It's obvious he's trying, he's trying to push himself more than he can handle with his skills. Honestly if he would go back a little and hone the skills in f2 or something he could be a great driver.

F1 is a job and as such, it is based on performance and meeting the goals of the company. HAAS is I'm sure, sick of being back of the pack, and so they want to improve but you can't do that if you aren't even in the race and your crews are having to scramble after every other race to repair a car. Mick is likable, he's a cool dude, and all of that, but can he actually get THE JOB done and secure points, podiums, constructors, push, and right now, that answer is no. There really are a lot of young drivers being held back by the unfortunate timing of vets not retiring (not that I think they should go just yet) and a few more on the grid that really either aren't ready or the clock has run out on their talent. As emotional as that is for some to think of letting Mick go...the reality is 1 or 2 more crashes and they'll have no choice. Can't race with no money under the cost cap.

Well, that's exactly why we shouldn't doing conclusions so far. P6 on a wet track, where he was racing for the first time. 20 amazing laps, but unfortunately Ferrari engine and luck decided to play a bad game with Mick. I think, he searches for his pace, as all successful drivers do first seasons. Also, he's clearly a second year driver: Formula 3, 2017: p12 Formula 3, 2018: p1 Formula 2, 2019: p12 Formula 2, 2020: p1 Last year was a disaster. Both Mazepin and Mick couldn't do anything to show the potentials, so i would not say that last year was the first normal season. He is doing great, but yeah, yet to expensive. The main headache are critics. He tried to beat Magnussen in Saudi after a ton of criticism, in Baku he was driving too slow because he was simply afraid to crash again. And again, today he was amazing!

I agree with the opinion that Mick needs to step up his game, BUT lets face the facts from another point of view: Last season, which was his first F1 season, he drove a shitbox which was clearly lacking pace, chassis and downforce-standards compared to every rival-team. He still outperformed his teammate in nearly every single session. He overtook Latifi, someone who’s been in F1 for a long time, in Portugal on one of the most challenging tracks in the calendar. Also there he didn’t crash or made any stupid mistakes like Mazepin blocking Perez dangerously (although maybe the chief missed telling Mazepin, but still Mazepin isn’t to take off of aby responsibility there). Mick also showed his potential in an really good battle against Verstappen and in general. Fact is that Mick lacks consistency and right now also surely confidence. Forward to this season. Mick hasn’t scored a single point for Haas and made 2 big crashes already. Facts in this season are: Magnussen came in and everyone knew he‘d be outperforming Mick, because he has clearly years and years more experience in F1 and race-cars. Also the media got 2 subjects since Jeddah, the second race of the season. Danny Ric & Mick. The new highly experienced and skilled (when he got the right mindset) teammate and the worldwide media are now pressuring a young man who hasn’t even been through half of his first real competitive F1 season. Jeddah crash was his fault, but in a high speed track besides the sea where wind can occurre any time. Miami wasn’t a stupid move at all imo, even Vettel himself said it was a 50/50 thing between them. He is young and had a good race there, ofc he goes for the gap (RIP Ayrton

To be honest last season was not a real season for MIck. He had an uncompetitive car and a teammate he could lear nothing from. This year he can compete with others and lear something from his teammate. If anything last season even made him a worse drive than he is. I think HAAS big issue is Steiner. Bringin in 2 rookies in a season is an umbelievable stupid decision. Also his strategist are shit always giving him a bad strategy. So i think he needs a third season which will be in fact his second season. Look at Zhou, a slower driver but with a proper teammate to learn from he is performing above expetations.
