In today's video I will explain in detail on the age old question. Do you need a pipe filter or not. Should you buy a filtered or non-filtered Pipe. 9mm or 6mm & what are the various filter options if you chose a filtered pipe. I will conclude with my personal opinion & preference.
Brief filter description below.
You cannot put any filter you want inside a pipe! In general, you have to consider two main criteria 6mm or 9mm. There also are pipes form certain brands that need specific filters (Falcon, Tsuge...).
THE DIAMETER:
It is the first criterion you have to take into account. Indeed, depending on the pipe's bore diameter, you will have to use the filter with the corresponding diameter (it is therefore not possible to put a filter with a 9 mm diameter inside a pipe bored with a 4 mm diameter, and vice versa). There are 4 different diameters of filters:
• 3 mm filters
• 4 mm filters
• 6 mm filters (Most common)
• 9 mm filters (Most common)
It is also possible to use an 3.5 /4mm adaptor, that can be put on 9 / 6 mm-diameter-pipes.
THE MATERIAL:
Pipe filters can be made from different materials:
Metal: the metal filter is a small piece made of metal, that is put on the stem. There are different forms of metal filter, depending on the pipe.
Balsa: balsa is a very light and soft wood, made of porous fibers with absorbent properties. Balsa filters are in the form of small rods.
Paper: a paper filter is made of rolled-up paper, that forms a hollow tube.
Meerschaum filters that can be used on briar pipes as well: meerschaum is a naturally filtering mineral. Meerschaum filters are in the form of cartridges, that contain small meerschaum balls.
Activated charcoal:(most common) activated charcoal has especially strong absorbent properties. As with meerschaum filters, activated charcoal filters are cartridges that contain granules of activated charcoal.
Keystones: made of volcanic clay, these small stones can be put at the bottom of your pipe's bowl.
Which filter can be used with my pipe?
Filter diameter
Type of filter 3mm 4mm 6mm 9mm
Metal Yes Yes No No
Balsa No No Yes Yes
Paper Yes Yes Yes No
Meerschaum No No No Yes
Activated charcoal No No Yes Yes
Keystones Yes Yes Yes Yes
Adaptor No No No Yes
Advantages or disadvantages of the various types of pipe filters.
Activated charcoal (most common). It is nowadays the most efficient filter to filter out harmful substances (tars, nicotine).Absorbs moisture, for a fresher and drier smoke. Also it reduces Tongue Bite with certain pipe blends & aromatics that contain higher sugar content & burn hot. The filter needs to be changed regularly (every 2 to 3 pipes).The draw with a 9mm filter is slightly restricted. (too airy without it)
4mm & 3.5mm plastic Adapters for 6mm / 9mm Pipes .Allows to smoke a 9 or 6 mm pipe without a filter. Simply for airflow restriction. But does not benefit the smoker like using a activated charcoal filter.
Can be cleaned easily, by running it under water.
Metal. Can be cleaned easily, by running it under water. It is the only filter that doesn't need to be changed regularly, unless it is broken, in which case you can buy a new one. Cheap. Does not filter out harmful substances as efficiently as some other filters.
Metal filters have a tendency to cause condensation, hence why some might prefer smoking without.
Balsa. 100% natural .Traps some of the tars. Absorbs moisture.
The wood rod will not fill all the stem, therefore the air flow will not be impeded. The filter needs to be changed regularly (every 2 pipes). Does not filter out harmful substances as efficiently as some other filters.
Paper. Absorbs moisture. Cheap. The paper filter needs to be replaced after every use. Does not filter out harmful substances as efficiently as activated charcoal filters.
Meerschaum. Naturally filters harmful substances (tars, nicotine).Absorbs moisture, for a fresher smoke. The filter needs to be changed regularly (every 3 to 4 pipes). The draw with a 9mm filter is slightly restricted . Meerschaum has a slight impact on tobacco's taste.(debatable)
Keystones. These stones can be used with any pipe, whatever the bore width. Absorb moisture for a fresher and drier smoke. Prevent tobacco wastage (tobacco leaves that might not have burned) at the bottom of the bowl. The stones take up some space, hence less tobacco will fit inside the bowl. The stones might not be compatible with pipes that have a very small bowl. The stones need to be changed after every use.
Tip: Some use shredded wine cork to absorb moisture.

Thank for this excellent presentation, Nathan! I have always smoked pipes without filters, but now would like to experiment with different types of filters with different types of tobacco, particularly those that tend to bite. Also, experimenting with the airflow when not using a filter will be interesting. Cheers!

I must give you applause Nathan 👏for a comprehensive review on pipe filters. I am very much like you, i have both filtered & non filtered pipes in addition i have 6mm & 9mm pipes. I mostly smoke my 6mm without a filter except with pure Virginias & 9mm pipes only with a filter. As i said pretty much like you😃 Thanks Nathan. btw your grandads pipe looks interesting who produced it i hope you would review it as i love vintage pipes.

Just found your channel. Really enjoyed this video. So I went and gave you a sub. I'm a filter smoker also. Virginias tend to burn my mouth with all the acidity in them. I can't tell much difference in 6 or 9 myself. I do have pipes that's non filtered for certain tobacco's myself.

Great Video!! Very informative. You know your filters and I agree with you. I prefer a 9mm than a 6mm White Elephant 6mm and Peterson 9mm. I use keystones in my cob pipes. I change filters every time after each use. I too enjoy my Falcon Pipes & Bowls. I been smoking a pipe for over 26years. Thanks for sharing Jose from Texas

Just subscribed. Wonderful explanation of filters. I found it very enjoyable and informative. I'm just getting back into pipes. I smoked them in the 70s and 80s for a while. Filters back then were extremely uncommon in the USA. After watching your video, I think I'll start out with a 6mm pipe, a package of balsa filters because there's no way I'm changing a filter after every smoke like I'd probably have to do using charcoal. I'll probably get an adapter too.This gives me 3 options. No filter, balsa, or an adapter. Looking forward to your future videos. By the way, still trying to figure out the accent. German? Scandinavian country? You have perfect English by the way. Wish I spoke two languages.

Excellent video as always! So as a new piper I've figured out that I'm a 6mm charcoal filter guy. I'm definitely sensitive to tongue bite, no matter the blend really. Obviously some blends are worse than others but it's not enjoyable for me to smoke unfiltered. One thing you didn't cover was the paper sleeve filters in an EA Carey magic inch pipe, which doesn't surprise me. I'm getting the impression those are not popular pipes. Which is surprising to me. I bought one second hand to try for fun and it's an amazingly good smoking pipe in my opinion. It completely eliminates the bite from even the worst offending blends I have. Nothing but smooth flavor out of it. I'm seriously considering buying another brand new. Oh yeah, I change my charcoal filter every second bowl and keep it in the bit separated from the shank until I smoke it next. The paper sleeve I get 4 bowls out of. But I'm still new and everything is trial and error yet for me.

Thanks Jesse for your informative feedback. To be honest I never heard of the EA Cary magic Inch pipe. Upon searching I am surprised I didn’t know they existed. Reading a bit more about the air chamber that is vented and allows cool air to mix with the smoke squeezing out tars & moisture on the papyrate sleeve. Although somewhat different systems it reminds me of a Falcon pipe. Thanks for the info. I would study this Pipe further.

This the type of video I was looking for. I have two pipes now. One crafted Canadian billiard no filter and one corn pipe w/filter. Right now I am about to buy one more pipe but... one Savinelli oceano with filter or a Peterson B10 newgrange spigot with no filter. I want to do the best decision.
@TheVapingPiper
@TheVapingPiper 3 ай бұрын
My advice is to buy the pipe your heart leads you towards. If the filter is needed to reduce tongue bite then it is important. Most Savinelli’s have a 6mm filter option so in theory you can smoke it without a filter and if you feel the heat add a filter. If your heart leads you towards the Peterson If you smoke slow and allow the bowl to cool down on occasion you should be fine without a filter.

I prefer 9mm activated charcoal filters because my tongue is very sensitive to pipe smoke. It just tastes harsh and unpleasant to me without such a filter. I've tried every filtering product on the market, with and without filters, but 9mm activated charcoal is my preferred method. And it has nothing to do with the way I smoke, cause my bowl only ever gets a bit warm when I smoke, but it still tastes harsh to me without a filter.

I just picked up pipe smoking again for first time in a while. I am mainly a cigar smoker and have never ever had a bite problem from cigars but with the pipe, virginia and vapors give me insane irritation if i dont do everything absolutely perfect. English smokes great for me. But now im really excited to get some filters to try. I really really want pipe smoking to be as enjoyable as cigars for me. Hoping it does the trick.
@Der_Kleine_Mann
@Der_Kleine_Mann 4 ай бұрын
@@theblishknovk It definitely takes quite a bit of a learning curve more, compared to cigars, but If you're willing to stick with it, then it will become a rewarding experience. With filters it's the same as with non-filtered: If the pipe gets warmer than hand warm, then stop, put it to rest for a minute or two, until it cooled down, and then get back to it. And better not pack the tobacco hard, but rather a bit more on the loose side. Watch videos on tamping, because a tamper shouldn't be used to compress everything tight. It should be used very lightly. And maybe watch videos about "ashing your pipe", because that's something that I found out by myself, and it really helped me have a better experience. Etc., etc. I could go on and on, but that would fill a whole book, so you gotta have to learn that either by a book, or by KZfaq videos, or by some people that really know a lot about pipe smoking. Wish you best of luck✌️

@@Der_Kleine_Mann i smoke very cool and pack somewhat loose. Im thinking it is more of a mouth chemistry thing. Ive been smoking a pipe on and off for probably 9 years and never had a problem with english blends. Its the straight virginia or vapors that get me. I never get the bowl hot and i sip and even on the best day i still get irritation. If the filter could knock the edge off i think i could actually enjoy virginias. Im not sure how much slower i can smoke haha. I can also smoke straight burley with no problems.

@@theblishknovk Ahh, I got it now. So then a charcoal filter should do the trick for you, I guess. You can also try different ones, since they're not all the same. I prefer the Vauen 9mm ones, since I have a very sensitive tongue, and these do give me the best results. Good luck✌️

Well constructed overview of the topic. I only smoke 6 & 9mm filtered pipes as my palate is over sensitive, interestingly & contrary to many, for me bolder blends like English & Balkan blends that are my favourite are the biggest offenders including Mac Barren pure Virginia that i most enjoy. oddly enough aromatics don't bother me as much like my most favourite Gawith Hoggarth Kendal Black Cherry as i assume cavendish leaf is softer & mellower in nature. Thanks Nathan for your impute on the subject. Incidentally i am seriously considering a meerschaum pipe that i would contact you by email for your advice. Regards. Daniel

Fantastic advice Nathan. My first experience with the Petersen Harp 99 was somewhat harsh, bitter and ashen in taste, a little better on the second bowl. I might need to try a 6mm filter to see if that works better for me.
@TheVapingPiper
@TheVapingPiper 8 ай бұрын
Thanks Mark. There a few reasons for that harsh & bitter taste. First your Peterson as it is new it needs to brake in properly hence the better experience on the second bowl. Also if you smoke too fast that over heats the bowl and the tobacco is burning hot so you loose the delicate nuances of the tobacco. You need to sip the smoke slowly and a little at a time while circulating the smoke in your mouth before blowing it out again slowly. If you retro inhale meaning drew and exhale through your nostrils you would taste the spicy notes. It takes time for the mind & taste buds to fully detect all the various tobacco notes but be sure you will with time and fully enjoy the experience as I do😊 I will address a video either next upload or one after next talking about how to taste your tobacco.edit a filter might actually be a good idea to eliminate the burning sensation that is called tongue bite as I described in this video.

@@TheVapingPiper Thanks Nathan, sound advice. I've much to learn and I am not giving up despite my first experience. I am adamant that this is going to be an occasional pastime for those special occasions. It was always going to be a strong learning curve for me as I have never smoked a pipe before, technique aside - I love the aromas from the blends I've purchased so will persevere. The Falcon pipe system looks very interesting!
@TheVapingPiper
@TheVapingPiper 8 ай бұрын
Indeed Mark it takes time & technique that you will naturally pick up as you go along. The one advice that I can give is smoke slow - better flavour!! If your bowl feels too hot you are smoking too fast. Also always drink while you smoke it enhanced the flavours. Always tap down the top layer burning amber gently to heat up the lower layers, as the main flavour comes from the heated but unburnt layer of the tobacco leaf not so much from the actual burning top layer. Much like tea leaf that releases its flavours by the warmth of the water. I will discuss all that shortly in a dedicated video. As for Falcon pipes yes it is intriguing as the base below the hollow bowl captures the moisture and keeps the bowl dry, much the the same but not as efficient like a meerschaum pipe that absorbs moisture like a sea sponge. I am becoming a big fan of meerschaum pipes that I will of course discuss in upcoming videos. If you need further assistance don’t hesitate to email me😊

@@Godard92 If you don't mind that i barged in your conversation. I too suffered at first from the harshness of my first blend Night Cap by Peterson, after few attempts i gave up and smoked a GH Kendal Cherry aromatic that was much more pleasant that i enjoy to this day. After a while i tried again the Night Cap on a Barling Marylebone Rhodesian 9mm filtered pipe and that was the start of my passion for English & Balkan blends that i only smoke on this pipe. My smoking experience has changed dramatically since using Charcoal activated filter as Nathan has shown. I wish you an enjoyable pipe journey and as Nathan says it takes time, trial & error till you find your sweet spot.

Made by Briarcraft in the 40's to 50's and then by Grabow from the 60's to the 90's, the system entails a slit metal tube running the length of the stem and into the shank with a doubled up pipecleaner on the bottom of the tube to absorb moisture. Patented around the same time as Falcon. Also sold by LL Bean when the world made a little more sense.@@TheVapingPiper

What would be the cons and pros of the 9mm over a 6mm then?
@TheVapingPiper
@TheVapingPiper 5 ай бұрын
They are both the same to pro’s & con’s of filters in general no preference one over another. The only difference between a 6mm & 9mm filter is the airflow. 6mm filter is bit more restricted then a 9mm.
