Despite some questionable reliability practices from Dell, we are overall impressed with their product lineup. A lot of their machines are made of good materials, have clever innovations, and have a nice design aesthetic whose mid range products are catching up with the premium ones.
Pros: Fast, good keyboard, latest wireless tech, GREAT screen, loud speakers.
Cons: Battery life, trackpad ever so finicky.
We recommend the Dell Inspiron 15 5000 and think it would be a great computer for anyone needing a mid range productivity power house.
How it compares? We like it better than pretty much most ASUS Vivobooks, and while its more expensive, it's a nicer machine than the ACER Aspire as well. We've found Lenovo's to be more reliable as of late, but Dell's customer service is superior to Lenovos.

Very good review, to the point, informative, entertaining. I've been looking for a good laptop that will carry me through university. I know you said that this works well for college students but I was wondering if you think that still applies to some of the more intense courses such as engineering?

Thanks Philip. Yes this would be fine for engineering students. We have clients that run CAD pretty heavily and a lot of them are equipped with Inspirons. Now, expectations do need to be set - if you're drawing up super heavy plans with tons of small files and details - it's not a super computer. But for most drawing apps this should practically do a fine job.

Bought a Inspiron 15 5510, Dec 4, 2021, 11 Pro 11th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-11390H @ 3.40GHz 16GB Memory 512GB SSD. Been a workhorse. Goes 5-6 days a week 8-10 hrs. No problems. Quick, durable, does anything I need.

I like your review style (this coming from a KZfaqr myself). How do you feel it performs in terms of video editing especially for 4K videos particularly for Adobe Premiere Pro?

Thanks Jay! Video editing 4k will get a little bit dicey if your videos are super effects heavy, RAW, or longer than 10-15 minutes (you'll run into huge render times and chunking lag). That said if you're doing simple vid processing with minimal effects or color grading, and you're using footage from a phone or a more compressed / basic camera e.g Go Pro, iPhone, Sony I think you'll do OK with this machine. Hope this helps!

True, some of the newer Inspirons are hard to beat... and the build quality is better than the XPS. We're getting in a lot of XPSs with issues I'm sorry to say. Otherwise I like the XPS platform a lot.

Thanks, SD. Yes they're fine machines. I personally don't find use in the tablet mode, but to each their own. If you feel you'll use the notebook as a tablet then it's a good model. That said, a lot of Dell's 2 in 1 machines do NOT support their pen - which to me is sensless. Make sure you get one w pen support if writing is a big priority for you.

I have this computer and I love it. My last computer was an Acer and it lasted for many years. The laptop, in my husband and I's opinion, is way better than MacBook of any sort. I have have heard various issues about Macs and Apple products in general from my mom.

For editing GoPro footage, this should work fine. Even at 4k I think. We've had the intel verisons in for testing - they perform well.

On this model it is even better to have classic charging barrel connector as if Dell would move to USB-C type charging possibility it would sacrifice existing USB-C port for this purpose so we would loose one useful port just for keeping machine running as the power port is not only charging but actually a power supply port that keeps machine running when you work on it for long period of time and I always plug mine to wall if I plan to work for more than 30 minutes.

Btw could u pls give some advice on which laptop I shld get ? 1) Inspiron 14 5415 (Ryzen 5 5500U, 512ssd, 8gb ram, AMD Radeon with shared graphics memory). 2) Inspiron 15 5510 (i5-3200H, 512ssd, 8gb ram, Nvidia Geforec Mx450). Or any recommendations besides these two ? I am currently in foundation and would proceed to computer science degree next year. I don't play games at all, just using it for college work and stuffs. And I hope to get a laptop that can support me for like 4 years at least.

I have also on Max volume ,hard to listen some of you tube video. Yours is Great on half volume. Thanks for Great Video. Also using 2 trading Big Platform on solid surface even gets hot fast. How can you make it cool? Not that much dust i can see. Any suggestions? I have 32 GB & memory is lot empty too. i am not good on Trac pad, so use cordless mouse. Thanks

Dell's in general lately run a bit hot so without seeing your computer it's a bit hard to tell whether the heat is normal or abnormal. That said a lot of Dell's are coming with less than satisfactory thermal paste - so there is the possibility that you may need to get your thermal paste re-done on the laptop. If you have a local computer shop you trust you can have them do that for you.

@computerstuff I'm typing on a Dell Inspiron 3000 (Ryzen5) which I bought about a month ago. I can't see how to pop off the bottom of the laptop. There are about 9 phillips head screws on the bottom. *Do they all have to be unscrewed?* I'm thinking of one day upgrading the 256GB SSD to something larger. (I miss the days of 1TB hard drives...). Would be super-grateful for a reply, Mr Computer Stuff.

Yes, all those screws have to be unscrewed and the bottom pried off with a plastic pry tool or a guitar pick.

Hi, could you please help me deciding what should I get? I want the laptop only for Photoshop and Capture one pro, i don't do video editing. I have two choices, Intel i7 11th generation with 16gb ram and Geforce MX 450 GPU va AMD Ryzen 7 5700u with Radeon Graphics. I am confused because extra gpu in Intel with 4gb memory will be good for photoshop on the other hand Ryzen 7 has 8 cores plus 16 threads and efficiently optimize the battery of the laptop.

I'm starting a home inspection business, later working with a drone for the tricky unreachable roofs. But I thought of giving each person a ground to above the roof line drone overview video. So they can show the house they are considering to friends and fam. Most of the reports will be in my small 5" notebook and then upload to a cloud. Hi Thomas, it depends what kind of gaming you're doing. I dont believe the 3000 series get equipped with any meaningful graphics card.

You may have the dreaded Dell heatsink issue. Basically you need to get the thermal paste redone in the laptop.

I feel stupid but your review indicates "15 5000" and I've seen 15 3000, but on Dell's website it just shows Inspiron 15. How do I know which is which?

Great question Annie. I do see on Dell's site that they have a 3000 but they don't indicate a 5000 or 7000 series. Generally the more power or features the more likely it would be 5000 or 7000 series but I dont know a good way to advise directly from Dells site. If you send me a link to a particular model you're looking at I'd be happy to confirm that way.

Does the Touch screen work well? I'm trying to pick between a non touch screen with a i7 11390 vs a touch screen with a AMD Ryzen 7 5700U. I've never had a touch screen, but everyone seems to say the AMD is better, what do you think?

Thanks for the great review. I was very interested with the laptop until I saw this video. I just cannot get past the hinge. I do not like how it would rub against any base in order to lift the rear of the laptop and that eventually it would discolor. It is one of those "cute" designs that just totally turns me off.

Appreciate your watching and commenting, Daniel. For what its worth we've seen laptops with similar designs and the rubber where it jacks the base up seems to last the lifetime of the laptop. To each their own, though! Hope you find something you like!

I got the 2021 hp pavilion model but its got the 4700u, would it be basically the same as this dell inspiron? My cold boot is about 8-9 seconds with fast start....

8-9 seconds is pretty quick. I'm sure the Dell would be in the same ballpark in terms of power. I like Dells much better than HPs, however.

Dell Inspiron. ASUS makes great machines but their LCD panels tend to be atrocious. Plus Dell has better after sales support.

The Zenbook is comes with a 400nit 100%sRGB in most configurations, and there's also a nice OLED option. Depending on where you live, that's far superior to the Dell Inspiron 5505 with a poor 220nit screen in Europe. In other continents I've seen the 300nit 100% sRGB as the best option for the Inspiron. Concluding, check the specs. Display wise the Asus is likely to be in front, whereas support, upgrades and repairability are a clear win for the Dell Inspiron.

@@dibyarokka1846 get this one , with better specs (maybe 16 gb of ram) Unless you are a heavy gamer ... It should do everything else for you.. If you are a light game it will do fine Heavy gamer , then find a laptop with strong graphics card...otherwise , its the best noe in the market , till other companies match up

Sadly my 2017 Dell Inspiron 15 doesn't have touchscreen capabilities. Do you think there is a way for me to possibly get it upgraded with a touchscreen?

Almost impossible. Most Dell laptops non-touch screen use 30 pin connectors, and touch use 40 pin connectors. You'd have to change motherboard at the same time. Cheaper to get a new laptop with a touch screen.

I'm considering this laptop with either Ryzen 5 5500U, 8 GB ram, 256 GB SSD for $630 CAD or the Ryzen 7 5700U, 16GB ram, 512 GB SSD for $900 CAD. Both seem to be unbelievable value for money. The only concern I have is battery life if I go with the Ryzen 7. Thoughts?

While a faster CPU can eat into battery life, it will likely only do so if you're utilizing its performance. CPUs are so highly tuned for efficiency now that if you are doing nothing more than a Word doc with a Ryzen 5 vs Ryzen 7 its unlikely you'll see much of a hit to battery life. In summary, if you can afford it, go with the faster unit, it likely wont hit your batteries bottom line too bad (unless your gaming / video editing on battery ;P )

I make fishing videos I upload to you tube. Nothing fancy it all gets shot in 1080 30fps maybe 60 sometimes with my go pro hero 9. I currently edit with you cut on my galaxy s20 and it works fine but Would like to use a laptop. Would this work for me?

Yes this laptop should edit 1080 GoPro footage just fine! I think most computers can edit any kind of compressed video editing these days.

I actually did order Dell 15 5515 7 Ryzen yesterday but today I read some opinions on this store page and one person wrote he has a problem with Wi-Fi - Wi-Fi card is sh** and so internet is very slow (he wrote he has fast Internet, his internet speed is 500 but this laptop only takes 150 but mostly 60).

@@MJ-xk2nk That's likely more a problem with their router than the laptop. In order to capitalize on the fast wifi speeds you'll need a wifi 6 compatible router. Having said that I think you'll enjoy the laptop a lot!

I'm trying to decide between a new Dell Inspiron 15 5510 with the i5-11300H CPU, 8GB, 512SSD which I can get right now on sale for $499 with Win10. Or, an Acer Aspire A515-45 with Ryzen 5 5500u, 8gb, 512ssd for $549. I plan to upgrade either one to 16gb and 1TB NVMe. BUT... the Acer has an extra slot (with caddy) for a 2nd SSD in SATA 2.5" format. Hard decision! Need help.

You've given me a hard question to answer! Both are great machines, both reliable. What are you using it for specifically? If you find yourself being a data hog the ACER is a no brainer - but if you're doing some light gaming and graphical work you may want to err to the Dell. Build quality should be great for both machines, but I prefer the looks of the Dell's generally. Dell displays tend to be some of the better ones out there as well.

I just ordered the 16GB, 512 GB SSD, i7 as i do a lot of web browsing, light photo editing, and crafting on a specific software that requires me to download a few things for it.. I’ve done a lot of research the past two months and finally picked this one after my 2013 Dell laptop is on its last leg 🥲 can’t wait for it to arrive

You think this laptop is still solid for 2023? I got a new 3525 Inspiron from Dell, and while its Ryzen 7 5825u is newer and better, the keyboard kind of blows. I think it suffers from the all plastic shell, and it's not backlit.

New Inspiron 5000 series machines are pretty solid yes. If you got a 3525 that's going to be parts bin Dell so yes it wont have as good of keyboard, webcam, etc.

Make sure you have the latest audio drivers from Dell. It's possible that you need to adjust the OS volume as well as the KZfaq volume. The audio shouldn't be THAT quiet.
