Let's Talk About the The Last of Us Remake

A while ago, actually, almost a year ago some very credible rumors about a The Last of Us remake started circling around after a Bloomberg report by Jason Schrier. This The Last of Us remake had reportedly been in development since 2018 and was at first supposed to have a release date equal to that of The Last of Us Part II. While this didn’t happen, since this The Last of Us PS5 remake is still very likely, given the source it comes from, I’d like to discuss it in this video, even if it’s late.
Hey everyone! Very, very late to the party on this one, but that’s not gonna stop me from discussing a potential remake of my favorite game of all time: The Last of Us. In this video we will be discussing the (supposed) history of this The Last of Us PS5 remake, we will discuss what can be expected from a The Last of Us Remake, as well as what I think of it and want to see in it. So Let’s talk about this The Last of Us Remake!

10 months since the last vid, I’m just so good at keeping my promises of being more active aren’t I lol. I got my first real break from uni in almost 7 months this week. Kinda wanted to make a new FEDRA full story ep, but since it’s only a couple of days until I start new classes I figured something else that was quicker to do would be better. The FEDRA series is still happening though, even tho it’s taking very long between eps. Hope everyone enjoys this one and hopefully it won’t be as long until the next vid! // TheiPadCat …Also I realise I actually made a video about the HBO show about two years ago so I guess it’s not quite as long since the last news vid as I thought lol

I’d still love seeing you expand out into other zombie content in a similar style to your TLOU videos. You go so much more in depth than most channels that cover zombie content that I’d enjoy seeing your takes on TWD, Dying Light, etc.

Apocalyptic games/movies/shows are my favorite types of fiction. I’ve actually always wanted to do videos on things like fallout and twd. What’s always ended up dissuading me has been that I know so much about tlou and so little (in comparison) about the others. Though, I am a big twd fan, and I did actually make one vid about it a while ago. It’s good to hear that you’d be okay with other stuff than tlou on the channel cause I’ll probably eventually end up experimenting with it. Also thanks! :) I love diving as deep as possible into lore whether it be tlou, fallout, twd, Star Wars etc. So I’m glad it’s noticeable in the videos!

All I care about if they’re going to do a remake is include two new sections. 1. I have a section set one year after Sarah’s death when Joel and Tommy are hunters and we can see the emotional toll it’s taking on Tommy. 2. Show us something that happened between Pittsburgh and Jackson such a long way for them to go not to show anything.

Your first section I'd love for to be made into an entirely new game / left behind style expansion. It's my number 1 wish for new tlou story and has been for years at this point. I wouldn't want them to tamper with the original for it though. It also brings up the question as to when exactly Joel and Tommy became hunters. I wonder if a year is enough? Especially considering the outbreak was a pretty drawn out event. As for the second section, I'd also love to see more of that part. It's the majority, distance wise at least, of their journey. I imagine they're planning to expand upon it in the HBO show, but I'd way prefer it to see it in game form. Again, just not in the remake, like with the Joel n Tommy stuff. Both of these would fit as a lost-legacy style experience tbh.

@@TheiPadCat I would like to see a game set a year or so after the outbreak from the point of view of the military as they fail to get it under control. Then we would be in the middle of all the biggest events that lead to the world as we know it. I love a small intimate character driven story just as much as the next guy but I also love a big epic story too.

Man you really nailed it with "This remake is pointless" argument, I never understod that argument in the first place. But like you said, we shouldn't let technical limitations of our favorite games define them. It is the characters and world that should remain sacred and pure.

@@DialloMoore503 I understand what you mean but I would argue that if you do the remake justice it can just purely gain from it. Look at the last if us 2, it has way better animations, gunplay, visuals. Basically everything is technologically better in that game compared to the original. Now if you just copy and pasted that into the original game it would make it much better in my opinion.

I'm so glad you're back man your videos are so good. I'm all for this remake and I hope it releases asap and we get an announcement soon. I remember when we first got the gameplay for the last of us part 2. I was replaying the first one in excitement and all I could think about was how good it would be if we got a remake with the same gameplay and graphics as part 2. I want it even more now than I did back then. I mean just the thought of being able to be Joel again is enough to make me excited and then on top of that we get the amazing gameplay of part 2 and the graphics? Not to mention bigger sized areas. It's like a dream come true for me :D. I hope the story isn't touched either but I feel as though they may try to make left behind blend in naturally. Hopefully not as the story is perfect as it is. I know the last of us isn't that old but after playing part 2 and then returning to the first one, you can really feel its age. You remember that it's a ps3 game and almost a decade old. You don't realise until you try to replay it again after playing part 2. I'm curious as to how they're going to sell it. Will it be a full priced game? Packaged with part 2 directors cut which has been leaked by credible insiders? or will everything be packaged together with part 1, part 2 and factions 2? Either way I'm excited and of course will be buying it. Hopefully the announcement is soon and they don't make us wait till outbreak day I think the remake will do alot of good for the community too seeing as it's been a mess since part 2 released. If theres one thing we can all agree on it's that part 1 is an amazing experience :)

It's great to see you post again. I agree with your points and hope you have time to make more videos around your classes. I like the idea of having other games set within the TLOU universe but with new characters to better flesh out the events from different perspectives. I also agree about the idea of seeing Joel and Tommy in the earlier years but wonder if it might be hard watching Joel as he is the aggressor against innocent travelers. All the violence he committed in TLOU was either against people trying to hurt him and Ellie with the 2 exceptions of the other smugglers working for Robert and, of course, at the end when he destroyed the Firefies to save Ellie. In any case, I hope you post whenever you can around your classes.

I think the Last of Us Remake is an excellent opportunity for the PC audience. I know this this video was put up before the annoucement of the game (finally!) coming to PC. If you are PC gamer like me then the remake is just a good thing but if you have played this game since 2013 then I can see why you wouldn't be interested.

Part 2 knew exactly what it was doing with Joel in terms of immersing the player into the story. It knew our love for him would drive us to the breaking point of revenge just as it did for Ellie. That’s the strength of that game and then it flips everything when we come back to play as Abby. I was among the few, it seemed, that was genuinely excited to play as Abby after the theater cliffhanger. Most people just turned off the game :/ I was thrown but by that moment I was so into what the story was doing that nothing was stopping me. By the end when Ellie has her revenge in sight, I’m not gonna lie I didn’t want anyone to get hurt in that moment. Not Abby, not Ellie, or Lev. That’s how you tell a story man. As amazing as part one is it didn’t have much of a challenge getting us to like Joel or Ellie. They’re very likable characters but part 2 had us questioning our actions and our concepts of what’s right or wrong. No other game has done this kind of mastery in storytelling and all of it hinges on our love for Joel. When people say they disrespected Joel it’s like saying Henry and Sam were disrespected. Just because beloved characters die doesn’t mean they’re disrespected. These kind of events shape other characters and honestly shape our emotional attachment to them and the game itself. If anything Joel was honored because the story shows just how important he was to Ellie. She went halfway across the country seeking revenge for his death and in the end found that she might in fact be taking the same thing away from someone else (Lev) if she killed Abby. After everything she was finally willing to forgive not only Abby but Joel as well because sadly she never truly did when he was alive. The game is a masterpiece and for those who can’t appreciate it I’m truly sorry because that is in fact your loss.

Oh my God! You back! 100% agree your point. Demon souls remake is great because they keep the back bone intact. The story for tlou is The essence and they should keep it no matter what.

100% agree with everything you said. Unfortunately I fear if it's an actual remake, the story will get tampered with to fit Part Two better, especially close to the end. It would make sense to do that too when thinking objectively about it. Personally, I haven't managed to bring myself to play the first game since finishing Part Two.. a couple of years ago, any hint of a TLOU remake would have me buying a new PS5 the moment the game got announced, now, I'm not so sure.

I think the reasoning behind calling the remake 'The Last of Us Part I' rather than just 'The Last of Us: Remake' and to be honest, changing the look of Ellie and Joel very heavily, makes me think that NaughtyDog are creating two separate TLOU timelines: one for the classic TLOU, keeping its art style locked with that game and thus crystallising the game as a stand-alone, artistic singular body of work, and the other timeline which has a sequel to TLOU, remaking it so it has an art style equal to Part II to make the games also feel like a double singular body of work, which will expand to welcome Part III eventually. These two timelines appeal to all fans, as one part of the fanbase prefers seeing TLOU as one game, one story, and purists (like myself) can be happy the original game's art style is still preserved, and the other part of the fanbase can have a consistent TLOU experience with Part I and Part II, as they actually enjoyed Part II. If this assumption is true - maybe it's a stretch - then I am really happy and thank NaughtyDog for doing this for us fans who want to see the classic TLOU maintain its beautiful art style a lot of us prefer, as well as keeping it as its own self-contained story.

This remake was exactly what I wanted as soon as I played The Last of Us 2! I expect them to take many of the gameplay mechanics from part II and just port it over to part I. The good thing is that they already have the mo-cap, and voice performances done. So really it's just recreating the levels. And piecing everything together. I'm really excited to see how they handle cutscenes. Will they be seamless like TLOU2? I bet they will be.

Pt 3 will begin with Abby and Lev finding the fireflies who are in contact with a firefly cell from South America who has the oriiginal Patient 0 who is infected and contagious but not turned or growing fungus from their body. One of the doctors working their finds out that by combining both Ellie’s and patient 0’s dna a cure can be made but only if they are alive. This will take us to back to pt 1 where Joel saving Ellie from the surgery actually saved the worlds only hope for a cure.

Oh how I hate remakes and remasters. Just, why? Why not continue upon exploring this world and make a whole new game, a true TLOU2 game, in TLOU universe with completely new characters. Joels and Ellies story can't be the only ones worth experiencing in this universe with pretty much unlimited numbers of fates. Maybe TLOU2 doesn't even have to be on the American continent, i'd like to see what happened to Europe and experience a complete new story there with captivating characters and story, maybe set closer to actual outbreak day or even after that of Joel and Ellies timeline so the world could recover more. Who know's. But what I don't want any more of is remakes and remasters. TLOU1 is fine as it is, time to take a look out further into this world-gone-to-shit and live through something new.

if the remastered version for the ps4 didnt exist i would be really excited for the remake, but thats not the case, i think that the game should be remade in the eventual ps6, it feels still to early for it to be worth it instead of just giving it better physics and higher resolution.

Wouldn't you enjoy a Part III about Ellie but also about how Abby and Lev find the regrouped fireflies on Catalina Island and see what they do with the Fireflies from there? Since you said you're interested in Fedra and the Fireflies but not Lev and Abby.

Yes! Exactly what you said! TLOU is my favourite game of all time and I will not accept any change in the story, but the technical upgrades, I'm all in for. Also, TLOU2 does not exist.

When i got my PS5 the first 2 games i played was TLOU 1 & 2. The first game plays like shit, it buggy and freezes up. So, as long as they do not alter the story nor voice acting im good with it.

TLOU1 plays fine on PS3 and PS5 and can even be played on PS5. And it looks nice, eypecially the Remastered version. If they want a relatively cheap Remake, they could just fill the gaps that ND had to leave in order to keep within the PS3 limitations: Different enemies models, nicer textures but thats it. No tempering with the great cutscenes, the story or the music. A reworked Left Behind DLC should come standard with the game. A real Remake will cost way to much, will use assets from TLOU2 and alot of details will disappear. But I dont think a Remake is not necessary . I would rather spend the money on TLOU2 DLC´s and others are still waiting for Factions multiplayer...

I have a theory: I think the reasoning behind calling the remake 'The Last of Us Part I' rather than just 'The Last of Us: Remake' and to be honest, changing the look of Ellie and Joel very heavily, makes me think that NaughtyDog are creating two separate TLOU timelines: one for the classic TLOU, keeping its art style locked with that game and thus crystallising the game as a stand-alone, artistic singular body of work, and the other timeline which has a sequel to TLOU, remaking it so it has an art style equal to Part II and story elements tinkered with a bit to chronologically and fluently connect to Part II better, to make the games also feel like a double singular body of work, which will expand to welcome Part III eventually. These two timelines appeal to all fans, as one part of the fanbase prefers seeing TLOU as one game, one story, and purists (like myself) can be happy the original game's art style is still preserved, and the other part of the fanbase can have a consistent TLOU experience with Part I and Part II, as they actually enjoyed Part II. If this assumption is true - maybe it's a stretch - then I am really happy and thank NaughtyDog for doing this for us fans who want to see the classic TLOU maintain its beautiful art style a lot of us prefer, as well as keeping it as its own self-contained story.

The Last of Us 2 is the greatest game ever made these people who can't get over Joel are ridiculous....I've never been so moved by a game no gane has ever even came close to how far this game reached inside me and yanked on my heart strings. Just an absolute masterpiece.

My favorite game of all time was TLoU, then it became RDR2 and then TLoU 2 came out and it just destroyed part one on all levels. It’s just a better game. There’s nothing else that comes close to part two. Nothing.

Nate Higgers tlou1 is a simple game from A to B but tlou2 is more complicated especially on emotional level. I like the story too but I think if the second game came way earlier people wouldn't connect to Joel as much. They would just look at him as some another static actor.

@@Pussydestroyer1950 we can’t look at him as a static character it’s impossible. You say that tlou is a simple game going from a to b, an yes they go from a to b but not simply. Tess dies, they run into hunters then Sam and Henry and Sam gets bit, then Henry kills himself. Joel doesn’t want to go with Ellie because they’re becoming too close but he ends up going anyway and has to decide whether he will let Ellie die and be damaged the same way Sarah had died. But he chooses to save Ellie because he couldn’t and wouldn’t go through that again, even though saving Ellie means killing the firefly’s and having no vaccine for the virus. This is written perfectly. Tlou2 wasn’t, a revenge story that makes it so Ellie should’ve forgiven. That was good writing the forgiveness part, she didn’t get to forgive Joel, she regrets it, she doesn’t forgive Abby, jessie dies, Tommy gets shot, Dina leaves, Ellie loses her finger so she can’t play guitar. But the Abby side so so goddamn terrible. Imagine if you’re watching John Wick, and halfway through the movie we see the guy who killed his dog and stole his car side of the story.

I just don't like the new remade look of young Ellie. She doesn't look similar to the original Ellie design in the first TLOU we all know and love, at all, and now looks way more chubby and squashed around the face, as well as different eye colours altogether.

@@altzerz the writers ability to draw emotional investment and the execution by the characters. The story does a masterful job getting us interested quickly into the main characters. Part 1 can stand on it's own in a way that part 2 does not. Unfortunately part 2 forces you to invest into other characters, and although 2 has excellent game play, and graphics, the story doesn't have that magnetic quality or quality character development.. whereas, I immediately restarted to replay part 1 when I finished it, I left part 2 once it was over.

Character development is what part two does so much better than part one The premise of the story is the cycle of revenge Throughout the story we see ellie Focus on revenge getting her friends killed losing her loved ones All for the sake of revenge at the end Instead of continuing the cycle of Revenge she decides to break it at the end of her journey losing everything is it really worth continuing the cycle of revenge? the reason she lost everything she decides not to which in itself is Wayy better character development than anyone in the series if you don’t agree make a counter argument I can keep going on and on on the what makes part two so much better

@@altzerz I was hardly invested in the characters, that part blows the tires out of the rest and is a fundamental to storytelling. I became a lot less interested in Ellie compared to the first part. I didn't really care how she progressed through the story.

I bet my money the Remake will be a justification for Part 2 so Abbys Story makes more sense. I also bet my money that Part 3 will than be a Game where you play Abby who finds the fireflies. Fireflies will be like "Ehh ya know Ya Dad left some Notes we can still make the vaccine." So Abby goes out hunting down Ellie.Than the whole Game you switch back and forth between Abby and Ellie until the climactic Finale where Abby makes the same decision as Joel and doesnt turn in Ellie but Ellie will decide anyway to go because she realizes she has to save the world. Bla bla bla and than Neil Druckmann will jrk off on his script because He is such a Genius with complicated Plots and that will be the post Credit scene a final fck you and this ladies and Gentleman will be the Last of Us Trilogy which once started good and ended the worst way possible MARK MY WORDS!
