Thanks for doing the video Brian! Great info and thoughts. I am actually the creator of the Grant's Dirt Guard concept and thought I would clarify a few things - this design is actually different than the Chemical Guys design, by design, and I would argue superior in several key ways: one, the taller legs allow for a much better fit/seal in BOTH 3.5 AND 5 gallon buckets. The CG version will not even fit all the way into the bottom of most 5 gallon buckets, and it can be loose in many 3.5 gallon buckets. Also, their finger holds are way too small (shallow and narrow) and make it incredibly difficult to get it out of soapy bucket (especially when it gets wedged in a 5 gallon bucket). Lastly, their design actually traps dirt on the TOP of the Cyclone because they put rings around each funnel opening, which ends up trapping dirt that can be easily transferred back into your wash mitt if you rub it on there. Hopefully those details help :) -MK

Your channel is the newest in my arsenal of making myself a better detailer. But I would also like to interject and help others as well. Hopefully soon I will be starting my own channel and entering the arena myself. I have two grit guards. Both of them have floated to the top. The one that’s a two part that you are demonstrating is pretty cool. What I do is simple. I wipe a panel with suds and mit. Then I simply spray it off with my pressure Washer to rid any grit. Then dunk, wipe, rinse. Works well for me. Thanks for your channel

So for an update on this as I watched it when I came out. I bought one immediately after. Made a bucket of absolute rinseless wash with the harbor freight grit guard and 6 of TRC Wolfpack towels. This thing WORKS. Little loose in the bucket but stays at the bottom and keeps the dirt down there. Also the chemical guys one is circular holed and doesnt have the feet to keep it off the bottom. But anyway. Thank you for showing these to me. I have since purchased 5 total one for each bucket

Nice summary of a seemingly insignificant subject, but some cars you absolutely need a grit guard because they are so dirty. My cars are older and I try to be careful to not add any more scratches or swirls so I use grit guards even though I know drying is the main reason for swirls.

The HF grit guard was actually the first one I purchased.. I have 2-3 of them now including several other models including the dirt lock..IMO the dirt lock is by bar the nicest and I need to get the pumper for it, doesn’t float. The HF one worlds as well as any other cheaper model, but tends to float a little. For the price.. find a bucket it fits well with and you’re good.

What people don't realize, cause they do see dirt left over in the end under any grit guard, is that most of these cheap grit guards aren't doing as good of a job as you think. The problem occurs when you dunk anything in the bucket thats full of water, it creates a particular flow inside the bucket that kicks up all the dirt on the bottom, and shoots it straight up. If you're using the regular cheap grit guards that have straight walled cuts in them, that dirt will kick up right through them. However some companies have realised this is a problem, which is why you have these vortex designs, like in the HF Grants, Chemical Guys, or my favorite the Detail Guardz Dirt Lock (they really studied the hydraulics of the water and dirt when you dunk something in the bucket, and came up with their really innovative design. The design complexity, material quality, and results, is why Detail Guardz cost a bit more).

Hey Alex - you need to make sure you insert it sideways to release the air bubbles just like it shows on the packaging. Since the Grant's Dirt Guard uses small holes to reduce dirt coming back up, that means it can trap air underneath it if you put it in flat. Just tip it sideways and you should be fine. There is a video on the product page that also shows how to do it. -MK

Blah. Stop using grit guards. Have one bucket with multiple wash mitts. Have 6,7 or 8 wash mitts. Clean a portion of the car then switch to another mitt and continue on until you are done washing the car. You then have no chance of decontamination due to redipping your wash mitt back into the and bucket.
@FABAutomotiveDetailing

How on earth did we ever wash cars back in the day before everyone started getting so anal? We used a hose, bucket, sponge and we were happy. I hate cleaning one wash mitt as they can be difficult to get all the soap out of before washing. I can’t imagine cleaning 8 everytime. I sell detailing products to some of the highest quality detail shops in Indiana and they use 1 bucket, Grit guard and 1 wash mitt.

He was with Meguiars for a long time but now he runs the detailing part of Harbor Freight. Every single move I've seen from them since he's been there has been an absolute home run. Some of the stuff I've talked to him about is awesome and I really think if he's able to even accomplish half of the stuff, it'll be a game changer for Harbor Freight, especially when it comes to smaller places and towns that may not necessarily have a place they can go to get certain things in a pinch.
