I recently found out that Heinz Salad Cream was created as a cheap, mass-produced version of a condiment made in Victorian times from real cream, cooked eggs, white wine vinegar, sugar and other things. Apparently salad cream made at home from fresh ingredients using a traditional recipe is a whole other taste experience.

Not a sauce, but a great seasoning condiment is: CELERY SALT. It goes with so many things: all meats, stews, soups, salads, green vegetables eg. sprouts, cabbage or broccoli, even sprinkled on plain flavour crisps! You can find in the herbs/spices section of most large supermarkets. WARNING: it is highly addictive!!!

I’m British and really wouldn’t have many (or any) of these in my house. Most are relics that belong in the past, especially salad cream. Mint sauce is vile and reminds me of school dinners and I’ve never been a fan of Branston however I don’t mind a bit of it in an M&S ham, cheese and pickle sandwich. The only 2 I like are pickled onions (much superior versions are available) and brown sauce which I would only ever have with bacon or sausage sandwiches.

cool idea! entertaining video! I like your honesty and humour (like your comment on only using one spoon, haha). Funny, I bought HP half a year ago in an expat shop in Vienna and last week I googled what it is meant to be used with. In HP the vinegar is much more present and I like it, I think Brits like tasting the vinegar, the sauces I was used to here in Austria were beside their main taste just sweet. Watching this video I remembered your mukbang video :D

Mint sauce...this is going to seem weird, but it works with fish and chips! Sounds unlikely... but as you're a piscetarian, you really should give it a try! :) HP brown sauce mainly goes with meat, such as sausages or in a bacon sandwich / corned beef sandwich. Maybe try it with cheese too?

Some of these sound good. I like horseradish and the kind I have had seem similar to the one you tried. I live in the US and US piccalilli is a lot sweeter than the UK variety. I would prefer the UK type. Since sauces similar to HP Brown sauce is used with meat in the US, I cannot imagine what you would use it for.

I've had German pickled onions, and they look like the ones you tried in this video, but they are really soft. I think they must be hot pickled, i.e., cooked, whereas in Britain onions are pickled cold, which would explain their crunchiness.

Like the smooth Branston Pickle as well as HP Sauce, cannot say am a fan of the rest though would probably like Piccalilli if the Cypriot version was more widely available in both chunky and smooth forms. For more offbeat British condiments would suggest trying Tom Kerridge Gherkin Ketchup, Gentlemen’s Relish, Tewkesbury Mustard, Non-brewed condiment, Worcestershire Sauce and Henderson’s Relish amongst others that immediately spring to mind. BTW have you tried British-style “French Mustard” yet (would recommend Waitrose)? Used to like Colman's Mild Mustard before they discontinued it. A bit of a fan of “Chip Shop” style Curry Sauces, which include Bisto Chip Shop Curry Sauce though prefer the Goldfish Chinese Curry Sauce and Mayflower Mild Curry Sauce.

Ok, I'm nearly 6 mins in and it's too painful: here's a tip for opening very tight jar lids. Take a spoon and put the rounded tip under the lid so the back of the spoon faces the glass neck. You want to place the tip as close to or directly on where the lid bulges. Lever the spoon like a pry bar; you should hear a pop; the seal is now broken.

Salad cream gets its colour from the cooked eggs and the mustard, if like myself, an intolerance to raw egg then mayo is a no no so has to be salad cream. One can't have a crispy bacon or a Cumberland sausage sarnie without HP sauce. It is great with fish &Chips. A nice mature or vintage Cheddar, crusty fresh bread and Branston, heavenly. Piccalilli is good with cold cuts. but as you don't eat meat you would have to have it with cheese. Never put a jar of pickled onions in front of me, it will be empty in 5 minutes, proper pickled onions not those little silverskin ones that are for cocktails only.

@@JenDre My favourite British (not exactly a condiment), spread would have to be Marmite. It’s really good on spaghetti, with some olive oil. (Nigella Lawson inspired). I don’t mind Branston pickle in a vegan cheese sandwich, but I wouldn’t use enough to justify ever buying a jar.
