President Michael D Higgins has said revelations about secret payments at RTÉ have been damaging.
Speaking to reporters at Ictu's biennial conference in Kilkenny, he said “public service broadcasting is crucial” but that it would be unfair of him to comment before any reviews have been completed.
“I know nothing about any of these deals. It would be very unfair [for him to comment]. Let there be process. Again, like I have been saying about everything, let there be the fullest accountability,” he said.
“We all have to move on to get to a better place. Look at the good things that are happening for example.”
He referred to public service broadcasting developments including short films involving TG4.

Accountability doesn't exist at the top of Irish society just the sense of entitlement.

People have been jailed & threatened for not having a TV licence - well no more will i longer pay .... absolutely despicable RTE & CO .... are in for one massive shock after these revelations ...all trust is gone .

He hasn’t a clue how to answer a direct question..... I don’t understand why we need to have a president & all the ridiculous costs associated....€300,00 for a figure head....Major reductions in pay scales need to be introduced from him,Taoiseach, & all ministers,TDS etc....way overpaid & all the big pensions...they fail as ministers in one dept ( with no accountability) then are made ministers of another & another...their all talk..

This stinks!! These top earners where getting cars on “Loan” for years??? Rubbish, these cars where Benefit in Kind (BIK) awards, that were off the books and labelled as a “loan” This is pure tax evasion, and that’s what should be pursued. If this is tax evasion, then RTE is involved in criminality - which means it is illegal to knowingly finance an enterprise involved in criminality - so technically it is illegal to pay your TV licence as you are knowingly financing a criminal enterprise!! This is a lid they do not want to open- as it makes our TV licence refundable. And anyone who has gone to prison for not paying it should sue the hell out of them!!
