Part 53 of this never ending series. I want to get some grey spray on this beast.
My biggest challenge yet! Can I FIX a 1988 Rolls Royce Silver Spirit with too many faults to list, there is more wrong with it than right. Will I end up crying into my Connolly leather seats or will this beast live on.
This is the cheapest Rolls Royce in the UK so I wasn't expecting much, hopefully bit by bit with sheer determination and zero skill I will attempt to fix each fault one by one.
This is PART 53 of this series. Every part will be filmed, and I hope to discover the craftmanship that has gone into this 34 year old moving piece of art.
If you would like to support these videos, please click here / mymatevince
If you have an interesting 'non returnable' item for a 'trying to fix' video then my PO box is as follows. Please only use if you are from the UK and using Royal Mail.
PO Box 2597
WATFORD
WD18 1HT
UK
Remember that this is just for entertainment and I am not an expert in these repairs. The processes in the video may not be the best way, the correct way or the safest way to fix these things. I do love fault finding and trying to fix broken things, so I hope that comes across in this 'Trying to FIX' series. Many thanks, Vince.

No sense of adventure! I roller painted my Range Rover outside in winter when the weather (and forecast) was great ... but it got so cold in the evening the extension lead for the lead light froze to the gravel! The next day I woke up to a 4inch layer of snow! It thawed a few days later and left a paint surface like rough blue orange peel! I roughly flatted and recoated it and it looked great! I swore on that day I'd never by a motor based on what it looked like!

My grandfather did paint and body work professionally for years. After retiring he loved to put pinstripes down all his cars. He LOVED the decals when they came out because it made his life way easier. Decal pinstripes allow a lot more forgiveness and are way easier. Don't even bother with trying to paint them.

These colour lights are usually not easy to get, however in a good automotive shop, they have a form of lacker (like transparent nail polish) you can use to colour your bulbs! That stuff is really good! I used it with the restoration of my Cornisch Convertible! By the way, a small tip; if you want to use a paint brush, you thin the paint until it has the appearance of milk! You get that by thin it up to one-to-one! Then you don't have to worry about about brush strokes. This method is only for paint without metallic! I would never recommend it with metallic colours! I really like your channel and hope you do more like these automotive features. For the pin-striping there is special paint for sale! ❤

I've missed these so much over the winter so I'm really glad to see them back. It continues to be my favourite series on KZfaq, so I'm still torn between wanting to see the car finished and for it to actually keep giving you problems so that the series never ends 😆😛 Well done on the respray, and well done on the decision, which I think is more important - when you're not seeing progress it gets you down, so if the car at least looks better it's going to improve your mood and optimism, which will have a knock-on effect on everything in your life. Good luck, Vince.

I agree, concentrate on functionality first and foremost: engine, brakes, transmission, suspension, and lighting. Do the cosmetic stuff last. Frankly, making it a "derelict" seems the better way to go - have it running and working right trumps appearance all day long. No worries about a door ding from a shopping cart (trolley as they say in UK)! It frees your mind of the worry about nonsense.

Given that the whole car has been about 'giving it a go' rather than looking for perfection, I would love to see you try and paint on the stripe. It's a Rolls Royce - it deserves the effort. If it goes slightly awry, I think it adds to the character. Plus it could be a great talking-point. You could practice a few times on something other than the Rolls, e.g. a biscuit container, to get the hang of it, and also make sure the tape is suitable for fresh paint so that it can be removed easily.

Take it from the son of an auto body repairman, go with decals. No tape is good enough to stop bleed in the hands of an amateur. The uniformity of a decal is your best bet unless you go to a professional freehand pinstriper. Amazing they are.

But it’s the enjoyment of the activity that matters. That’s the point. Secondly, it may be some months or longer before the car is repainted professionally and this work amounts to an effective interim measure, meaning the car can be enjoyed.

Just my two cents, but go with the decale for your pinstripe. Far too risky to mess with paint after all the work you've done on the grey. Decals can be taken back off if it all goes south, bleeding paint or paint drops won't be so simple. (just my personal take if it where my decision). Nice work as always. Hopefully the paint work gives you inspiration and reward.

The problem with LEDs, is they are notoriously hard to dim, without complex circuitry. All those panel lamps will be in parallel and dimmed by a rheostat. The originals should all work, but any LEDs in the circuit, will have problems. Either not dimming at all or suddenly going off, when the voltage gets too low. The random dimming of that PRNDIL incandescent bulb, is a mystery. Not likely to be caused by LEDs paralleled in the circuit, but something else.

With the Gear Selector Light, I have encountered similar problems. I would take a length of wire, and place one end onto a (good) known Earth Point. When your bulb is glowing dimly, place the other end of the wire onto the bulb housing. Obviously, if it reaches full brightness when doing this, you have an earthing fault. I have also replaced the incandescent with LEDs in an Instrument Panel, with no ill-effects at all. You can match that bulb with a suitable LED version, and possibly even buy a green LED. LEDs consume much less current, so the LED version may be the solution to your low brightness level, if you have 12V available at the suspect bulb base. I'm sure that you know all of this already, but this may help others.
