She was always defensive about not helping MacKenzie and seemed jealous of Valerie's fame. And sadly after one day at a time her career stalled.

No it didn't. She continued to direct and do theater, which is what she was doing before the television show. Her first love was always the theater. She did One Day At A Time before Norman Lear offered it to her. It was her decision to end the show when they had an option to go 2 more years.
