Nice to see younger people discuss martial arts. Having a teacher from Japan who was also a tournament trainer is something we students had the pleasure of in the US. That was a long time ago for me. There are changes to Karate because of the internet. I wish we had it back then to learn the katas.

That was awesome! I can’t wait for part 2! Funakoshi wrote in Karate-Do My Way of Life, “Time change, the world changes, and obviously the martial arts must change too. The karate that high school students practise today is not the same karate that was practised even are recently as ten years ago, and it is a long way indeed from the karate I learned when I was a child in Okinawa”.

One thing I have noticed as a big difference between karate in Japan and outside of Japan (based on my own experiences) is that the concept of "black belt" is very different. In my experience, many Japanese dojos are close to being like the American "McDojo", where everyone gets a black belt if they pay enough. I have seen scores of kids with black belts in Japan, where in my own country, black belts are rather rare. I think this stems from a different viewpoint of what is required of a black belt. In the style I used to train, for passing black belt one would need to know 10 kata with bunkai and several "hidden bunkai" or advanced applications, as well as a lot of history, anatomy, terminology, being able to apply the bunkai against an opponent (albeit this opponent was of course someone who always performed a preset attack), and this was just for kata. Then there were many other short forms, more history, physical fitness tests, anatomy, terminology, etc. In Japan, it seems to me at least like children can get a black belt just from knowing the "form" of the kata, and not understanding what is happening or why, let alone how to apply it. And I think this is why this difference exists. In Japan, and again, this is just my own opinion, it seems that mastering these things is viewed as coming after getting a black belt, and not before getting it. I might just be silly, but this is at least what I have observed.
@idleeidolon
@idleeidolon 2 жыл бұрын
let me try to TLDR your comment. in japan, black belt is seen as step one. you now know all the forms, but you're far from mastery, that's why even children can be black belts. outside of japan, black belt is seen as a sign of mastery, it's not just step one. it's proof that you know and understand techniques and can apply them in real combat.

Really interesting video! As a Shito-Ryu practitioner with a Japanese sensei and so on, we have this kind of weird “mix” between a western sense of karate and a Japanese sense of karate. Our sensei was very open to showing what karate is while still practicing it the way we want to practice it. It’s a lovely dojo we have and I would encourage everyone who hasn’t tried karate to try it!

My Japanese Sensei from 1970 to 1981 taught Me the word "Shu-ha-ri". He explained this as follows: Shu, learning from tradition. Ha, breaking the bonds of tradition. RI, transcendence. Karate becomes Your own. It is not that You aren't traditional, but You are now what You practice and seem as though You are doing something New when in reality it was done by those before You. These so called New styles are not doing anything new or different. I have practiced Shoto-Ryu Karate over 50 years. It changed and improved My life. I am grateful for both Your channels. Thank You.

I don't know if you have run across this channel before. Takafumi Nakayama runs a channel called Fukuoka shidokan on KZfaq. He mixes it up between English and Japanese but usually includes subtitles. I would say he focus is to promote shorin ryu shidokan and yamanni ryu kobudo specifically but it is quite technically but friendly in its delivery. Sensei is open to any style coming to visit and train.

I'm honestly very excited to see this. Here in the west it's very difficult to find a good martial arts teacher because of three things. 1. They're good teachers but very expensive. 2. They're bad teachers but they're cheap. 3. (The worst one) Bad teachers disguising themselves as good teachers and they're expensive. By bad teachers I'm talking about those that easily handout high ranking belts. Those that tell you to pay $200 to even get your next belt (yes that happens). And those that end up not teaching you actual self defense techniques that could help you in a dangerous situation. I'm really curious about whether Japan has a similar problem with these kinds of martial arts schools and especially hearing you guys's thoughts on the matter.
@Celediev
@Celediev 2 жыл бұрын
I mostly agree with your assessment of what constitutes a bad teacher, with one exception: I really am fine with martial arts teachers not teaching "actual" self defense techniques. Just because you mastered a martial art does not mean that you are capable of handling situations involving actual combat. And even if that teacher has mastered self defense to such a degree they can teach proper self defense techniques that can help, they first need to make sure the people they teach are physically capable of applying those techniques and mentally capable of judging their own skills in a life threatening situation. Teaching an average 12 year old how to defend themself against an adult attacker with a knife can cause more harm than good as they might be tempted to actually try and fight back. Really the most valuable self defense technique you can teach someone is to run away or to throw your belongings on the ground for the attacker to pick up and hope the attacker lets you off the hook. To be honest too many self defense schools all over the world forget teaching this

I have watched a great many of the videos on the Karate Doju waKu. I will say these things. He is young. He often speaks out of touch of reality when it comes to the indifference of others dealing with the reality of those who have much more experience, and see the bigger picture of many avenues of the world around us and life. With that being said, I do appreciate his ability to express his karate and heart for the culture, and also Japan. I was very turned off, as many were, when he talked about the Karate Kid 2 and made irrelevant points to things like the nails on Kumiko in the romantic scene with Daniel and Kumiko. The jewelry, the nails on Kumiko, misjudging what she is doing, and on and on is not the point of this movie, or the series at all. It is truly tragic when people miss these facts and moral values. The movie series was beautiful, and said a lot of things many of us need to hear from all walks of life. This is not just about what country you are from or what racial background you are from. I am adopted and never wanted to know my racial background, because this is often divisive and pointless. Many miss these things in the Karate Kid movies, even when it is very obvious. Those movies are authentic and special in so many ways. And the instrumental music most of all is a big character also, and one of the main reasons the majority love the Karate Kid movies so much. This adds to the realism, tenderness and depth of Mr. Miyagi, Daniel, and others in the most endearing scenes during the movies. The Cobra Kai series, unfortunately takes away from all that, and really should not have been made. But that is yet another issue. I appreciate Shogo and his family always, and thank you to Karate Dojo waKu for your videos of the arts you practice, and what you can share in other things. Not so much the movies, but in your world you live in.

Here in Germany Shotokan and Goju Ryu are the most popular styles, Shotokan being number 1, with Goju following closely. Shito Ryu comes in as 3rd. And Kyokushin is just one of dozens of marginal styles. When you ask a Karatepractitioner in Germany about the "big 4" they will say Wado Ryu as 4th. But since the early 2000s quite a number of Shotokan Dojo left Shotokan to join okinawan styles.

It's thanks to martial arts that I've found a career path and a goal I want to achieve. I've been studying Taekwondo for 17, going on 18 years now. I had to stop for a bit due to me losing my sight at a young age, but I practiced what I learned for years. Then years later, I was able to pick back up where I left off. And now, after all these years, I'm near my black belt, and I'm studying to become an instructor so I can one day teach those who are like me and don't really have a teacher. I'm really grateful for my sabumnim and what he's taught me. Sadly, it'll be the last time he teaches me due to him moving schools, but I'll still train just as hard under my new sabumnim.

Balance between tradition and evolution is best. Tradition feeds evolution but moderates and guides it. Evolution keeps tradition alive and helps it remain relevant. Change is not always good. Nor is it always bad. Nowadays, it's mostly bad. So I understand Japanese who prefer the things to stay the way they are. I mean as long as it works, why change? Because you see, the thing about having an "open mind" is that everyone will try to stuff their own ideas into it. And suddenly, you have a society devoid of judgement and no personal responsibility. I'm sure if you take a look at the west and what they preach as "progress", has damaged their society in nearly an irreversible way. And what draws me, and I can assume a lot of other non-Japanese to Japanese culture is exactly that, the unchanged values, tradition, and not tentacle monsters...
