How to use articles 'a', 'an', and 'the' in English? - Basic English Grammar lesson
English articles ("a", "an", and "the") come before nouns. They help to communicate which thing you're talking about, similar to words like "this", "my", and "all". And they're confusing to a lot of English learners.
Articles are really, really hard!
If your native language doesn't use articles, they can be really confusing. The truth is, you might never completely master articles. Most non-native English speakers don't, even know if they're quite fluent and have spoken English for a very long time. That's mostly OK. Mistakes with articles don't usually get in the way of communication. Your listeners or readers will usually be able to figure out what you mean by guessing whether you meant "a thing" or "the thing".
So while you should try to improve your skill with articles, you shouldn't worry much about them. This video lesson by Niharika will clear your basic doubts for using articles correctly.

"An" doesn't come before a vowel in particular. It comes before a noun starts with "vowel sound". for eg: "an umbrella" but "a university".

A very good question.. And your sentence is correct. : ) And I'm very surprised 'Thakshan Reddy' that no one had answered your question in 4 years and equally surprised for 'Syed Zaid' as well. Well, never mind. So the answer to both of your doubt and doubts of 100's out there is.. As a rule, we use 'an' for vowel sounds and not really for vowel letters. So when you say 'universe' the sound that you hear is 'yuh' or say you-ni-verse and hence we will use 'an' as an article. Same goes with 'a universal truth' though it starts with the letter 'U' the sound that we hear is 'yuh' so it's you-ni-versal. Another example would be 'I have studied my masters from 'a university'. We we wouldn't say 'an university', that will be wrong. And I'm now sure you know it why : )) Another example would be "I'll be there in an hour." Here, we are using "an" despite of 'hour' starts with 'H' however this is the right way because the rule says that we give importance to the sound and Hour is pronounced as "Our". The 'H' sound in 'Hour' is silent. Hope it's very much clear now. Happy Learning!!

We have to use an with vowel sound like an umbrella sound is of a in umbrella Or a unique book not an unique because its give a consonant sound Dont confuse with vowel or consonant Go with sound dear if a word sounds vowel use an always... I hope i clear ur doubt... If u still have any doubt then u can ask hesitantly..

@misstroby6873
@misstroby6873 8 жыл бұрын
+Jahan Gir It's not either. If you want to say that you have just One Rupee you would say either: one rupee (no article) OR a rupee (without the "one") you don't use "a" and "one" together since they both indicate that you want one object using them together is redundant.
@MrAnilkota
@MrAnilkota 8 жыл бұрын
+Jahan Gir This is because, there's no use of a, e, i, o, u, of identifying "an'' article, rather it's essential of being listening and making sense out of pronunciation, the word that pronounced with a, e, i, o, u,. For example, apple Ah is pronounced. The article "an" too is something like this. Vowel letter doesn't matter any think it's all that matter called listening to the letter and matching the letter in spoken terms. She is just for the sake of basic understanding, she went to the base or simplest platform for the dummies or poor grammar educators.
