Welcome to the Letterman KZfaq Channel, home to all your favorite clips from Late Night and Late Show - as well as conversations with the writers, producers and performers who helped make it all happen. The language may strike you as quaint & flowery, the clothing comically lacey & ornate - but that’s how things were back in this colorful and now bygone era.

When Gene Siskel died, Roger Ebert felt so hurt and betrayed because Siskel never told him he was sick. So it was that moment that Ebert decided that he would not hide any terminal illness. That's why when he got diagnosed with the C, he was very public and brutally honest about it from the beginning. He didn't want anyone to be hurt the way he was. But Roger's C was much more prominent, and almost impossible to keep secret. So he probably made the right choice by going public with it from the jump. Roger even participated in a documentary about his struggles, which he knew was only going to be released after he died. That's very brave. And that documentary didn't hold anything back. It was very raw, and often times difficult to watch. Especially if you've ever dealt with a loved one being sick.

Ebert’s final years were rough. Didn’t he even lose his jaw?

@@galedribble9535 yeah. And with that, he lost his ability to speak, and eat normally. That's why I say he couldn't really hide his sickness, even if he wanted to. Technically he could've hidden away in exile, but he didn't do that. But he still continued to review movies until the very end. He was actually one of the very first celebrities who initially bashed twitter. Saying that twitter is for twits. But once he lost his ability to speak, he actually changed his opinion on twitter, and used twitter as a way to get his voice back. At the time while he still alive, he had sent more tweets than any celebrity on the platform. And he said that twitter brought him back happiness he had lost.

It's odd that so many famous men hide their terminal illnesses, like Gene Siskel, Gene Wilder, Chadwick Boseman and Paul Reubens. I can't think of any women who've done that. It seems less like an act of nobility and more a masculine instinct to try to look strong. Same way a wounded animal might try to hide being sick in the wild so that he doesn't look like easy prey.

And it if were on Netflix, they'd make it an 8 part series because nobody can stretch out 40 minutes of entertainment into 8 hours like Netflix.

It's funny how they used to be able to discuss "the movies out this summer." Now we basically just get "the movies out this weekend." Most of them are out of most theaters within a few weeks, and don't last an entire summer anymore. It's a little unfortunate that Ebert made fun of Gene Siskel for slurring his speech because that was likely an early sign of his brain tumor. Gene was diagnosed 11 months after this and died 9 months after that.

Gene was always a little marble-mouthed compared to the very articulate Roger. There are some very early outtakes where Roger is making fun of him for not getting his words out. It was just one more source of banter between them, like the fat/bald jokes.

Well it';s interesting that "Dave" is WOKE to the Greedy Mouse Ears of Disney back then but he was corrupted and forced to do the bidding of G.E. and then CBS. Whatever ousted molester Les Moonves said was their political position it also automatically became Dave's position. So who;s kidding who?
