The lift was probably the biggest loss, but getting it moved seemed like a long shot from the start. I didn’t think the track there looked that good and while the roundhouse would have been cool, it was falling apart and you have the other train shed to restore. I think letting it go was a fair choice and I look forward to new projects on the Mill Brook!

Agree... While functional and long lasting (as well as being better than nothing at all), steel bar stock or C-channel track just doesn't cut it. If you could have salvaged the turnout frogs, that probably would have been the next best thing to saving those, plus the lift/turntable, those lift/turntable mechanisms don't just fall out of the sky.
@JaredDunbar
@JaredDunbar Ай бұрын
That lift had so many question marks with how it was going to get done, you would have needed probably a backhoe to get it out.. getting one there was probably going to be difficult. They are not cheap to rent. Then again, new single piston lifts are about $10k plus the oil, tank, pipe, compressor, etc.

Like you said, you've gotta do what you gotta do. If you were the only one carrying the torch with no one to pass it to, then when you've carried it long enough it's time to snuff it out. I believe you've done everything you could to carry on its' legacy! Maybe write a book and take lots of pictures to share. In my career with the railroad, it never really hit me until I saw a photo of me and my train on tracks that aren't there anymore. The need for preservation of the information is there even if we can't save the tracks themselves. It is important to be able to carry on the legacy beyond the time that it existed. Sort of like a tombstone or an obituary in the newspaper. Gone but not forgotten!

The engines are cars are the most important part at this point. Track is track and while worth some money, it is not the end of the world. You lived this long without a lift, you can keep going without it now. There is only so much a person can do time wise, physically, and financially. As far as my feelings, you got what needed to be saved. The steam engine and rolling stock. The buildings were falling apart anyhow, and track is just track. It is good that you feel a weight off your chest. That means you made the right decision. The Millbrook RR is bigger equipment wise now and that is a good thing.

Aaron, though I can't say it's happened to me with a whole 7.25" gauge railroad, I definitely know that feeling of discovering there's just no way to make everything I wanted to happen, happen. I'm glad you salvaged what you could from the railroad up till now. It's still sad- but you said it yourself. I’m glad you saved what you could. Sometimes it’s difficult when you encounter a no-win situation, because reality sometimes isn’t the fairy tale where everything went right in the end - and that’s hard to swallow. That steam locomotive is one of the most interesting pieces of the collection. You have invested a lot of time, energy, and money into the restoration so far, and I’m excited to see it under steam again at its new home.

What is the Ossipee Central Railway? The site? The rail and its arrangement on the property? The structures? The equipment? You saved as much of the equipment as you could. That's a win that preserves the OCR. The property couldn't be saved. The rail - used, maybe partly reusable - but as was said, track is track. Not a huge loss. The structures - from the videos, they didn't seem in great shape. The lift, while a nice to have, would have been a bear to remove in a functional state. You did good to save the equipment. Pour your enthusiasm for saving OCR into the equipment's restoration so that it can continue to bring joy to train fans big and small.

Rails are rails, but without them, no train. Of course it depends of their wear, but brand new isn´t cheap. And large amount not necesseraly available + shipping cost. Same for ties. Just cutting rail joints with grinder or unscrew, and with some care, just pile them and they´rd ready for installation. But more combersome that way. You save time but not trips. Switches already made isn´t bad either. Did Aaron already pay for them or not is also an issue. We don´t have its great experience, since he already dit it in the past. Also how far is it ? Could he get helpers ? Probably not the best decision on the long run, but for now, like he said, no choice. He must bend under the wind or brake.

@@danielfantino1714 As far as I am aware, I think he purchased primarily the rolling stock and equipment. That's the important part, in my eyes. As long as the Millbrook lines are of the same gadge (Which I believe they are) then the keeping of the Rails was more of a cost saving measure. Does it suck that the rails and lift will be gone? Absolutely. But the important part was saved, in my mind.

Your train is stuck at the switch. Where´s the main ? Which one is the siding or is it a team track ? Your the boss, so decisions are yours only. Remember your first YT post. It was fun. You showed to all your little world. The fun of that hobby turned a bit sour with always more followers. Produce, then you must do. The fun turn slowly in a business with what it means. Patreon bring a small amount of cash. So you could improve toolings to be more efficient. Finding new videos ideas, better cam, micro, invest cash and time. Plus reading all comments like this one. Showing how you make your locos brings more order. More pressure. More obligations. Where´s the fun now ? But your still the boss. I tryied to "wake you up" when you start to work on the steamer. I remind you, the turntable, the siding extension, the new branch. Feel free Aaron to kick me, to never read or answer my comments. It´s ok. I´m old enough and burned gozillon of cash in full scale preservation. Pure joy and worst slap in my face, many times with trash at the end. But still want to save what´s left. So easy in life to burn ourself. Only you know the state of Ossippee rails and ties. You learned that second hand small rails means some longterm burden. I hesitate to write you that. I´m sorry. Real sorry. But you´re still the boss. The fun of the begining or Henry Ford 2 ? It´s up to you. Not my easiest comment to you PS: that jack weights a ton, how many times you would use it in a year. A piece of track can be hoist easily with pulleys and winch. And putting an oily thing in your ground with today environnemental is asking nightmare in case of leak. Sorry but your green locos won´t be banned. Steamers who knows ?

Good points. There is a lot that goes on behind the scenes here, and I share mostly the highlights with you folks on KZfaq. The OCR track was C channel steel and fairly beat up. The roundhouse roof is starting to leak. The turntable lift needs new seals. I had work crews lined up, but the person I was buying the railroad from (who is not the property owner) canceled my plans multiple times. There is more, but let's just say that there was little consideration given to my schedule or budget. The last straw was when the seller canceled pulling the track up because he wanted to go gold panning for the weekend, and pulling up the track would have to wait. Now it's his problem.

Sounds like new ownership(of the land) got impatient, now let them deal with the expense of getting the lift and the rest of it removed(instead of at a much lower cost/free). Although, depending on the terms of the sale agreement that might be easier said than done. A lot of what happens depends on the wording in the sale contract(I presume it was made with the other party that bought the other equipment)., if there ever was one.

@@MillBrookRailroad yes, i have "N", "HO", "S/American Flyer", and "Lionel", both my grandsons love trains, as their dad is a CN engineer. But my daughter is staunchly against having me build a nice setup for them, even though they have a very nice, large basement. Her motto is, "if it wont fit under a bed, they cant have it." My late wife was hoping that they could have some of my many trains, just to keep part of my legacy alive.
