Letting the light in: James Turrell, artwork at Roden Crater: Arizona State University (ASU)

It would be virtually impossible to not to come through this space and not be transformed by it. One of the most important pieces of large-scale artwork in the world is in the desert of Arizona, where artist James Turrell spent decades shaping the landscape into an observatory called Roden Crater.

Roden Crater is a masterwork of light and perception inside a dormant volcano, seen by an exclusive few hundred people every year. A new and innovative partnership between Turrell and ASU will help complete the artist’s magnum opus on the edge of the Painted Desert, making it accessible to many more people and developing an academic component for Turrell to share his artistic vision and inspire transdisciplinary approaches to creativity.

It is about light. It is about the hope everyone needs. It is about the creation of life, the generation of love, and whatever you feel as a hope in the time you are breathing. Thank you James Turrell. This project has a golden potential to turn into one of the most important projects in Art and Architecture in the world, for the concept is light. You win because of the light's victory over the darkness. Thank you again for giving this invaluable treasure to the community of Art and Architecture.

I donated regularly for years...but the Turrell Foundation absolutely will not release any kind of projected completion date or even decade. It is certain to be mindboggling for the whatever future generation is alive to actually experience the crater.

This is a lot of things but primarily an ad for Arizona State, for journalists/interviews and a lot of academics. Also a monument to hubris, and shows how far "Art" goes without any demonstrable talent whatsoever. Yeah it's cosmic, it's mystical man. This will help bring back the sixties, the Beats and the hippies. So California. At least the geodesmic dome had a function. Rothko and a few others have done things like this at a lot less expense. Rothko's Chapel is for folks with an en education and sensitivity. This is for the punters at a tacky World's Fair. "Let there be light" bla bla bla in an avant garde subsidized Art Journal. Keep those patriarchal whiskers, you so look your role of "genius" but you can't complete a sentence without 4 cliches and 9 banalities.
