This Leupold Custom Dial System (CDS) is a new idea that gives you an elevation dial tailored to your ammunition load and rifle specs. Once you purchase a Leupold CDS scope you can provide the required information to Leupold and they will send you a custom CDS dial free of charge. The scope reviewed is the Leupold VX3 4.5-14x40 CDS Side Focus 30mm model and like all Leupold products, they are rugged and reliable. This scope retails for under $1000 here in Australia and are imported by NIOA: www.nioa.com.au

Absolutely mate. You definitely did a wonderful job at reviewing this incredible optic! You explained it so well - that I found myself, finally pulling the trigger, and purchasing me a couple of the Leupold VX3 4.5-14x40 CDS Rifle Scopes. I bought one for my ALEXANDER ARMS 6.5 Grendel, and another Leupold, for my CHRISTENSEN ARMS Ridgeline Range. Leupold's Optics are absolutely a wicked beaut, they're absolutely top-notch. In regards to the quality of glass, and the complete craftsmanship, it rarely gets any better, especially at this price point. The glass is incredibly clear and clean. No haze, the edges are totally void of any shadows, and the coating of each lens, obviously brings out incredible brightness and clarity. The idea of the CDS feature, was absolutely genius. THIS OPTIC IS TRULY AMAZING! Another huge bonus is the Lifetime Warranty. The overall quality of this optic would easily cost, 2-3 times, what I actually paid! Plus, the light transmission is far superior to other, much more expensive optics, that I generally used on a regular basis. This is definitely, one HELL of an AWESOME RIFLE SCOPE, THAT I WOULD CERTAINLY RECOMMEND, EVEN TO MY ENEMIES!!!

This is a good scope for Sambar Hunting. You can dial it for a long-range shot across a gully but it doesn't have long tactical target knobs that will risk getting moved when you are stalking through a tight bush. It's also relatively light so it won't unbalance a lightish stalking rifle. Where it would not be good is when your hunts change extreme elevation from location to location because the CDS system is only suitable for the altitude the turret cap was calibrated for. Plus or minus 3-4 thousand feet.

That's a fine scope you have there, although there are a few things to consider. In this price range you can get a range finding scope like one offered from Burris or Bushnell with automatic hold over. I just find that option much more convenient as you can program the ballistics info at home on a computer...rather than needing a CDS though Leupold for every caliber/circumstance. Just my 2 cents.

Lee hamrick , if you sight in at 200yds - most big game rifles will impact target no more than an 1 1/2" high, even at shorter distances such as 50-75 yds, in fact at 50 you will actually hit about a 1/2" low. Hope this helps. I just purchased the VX-3i in 4.5-14x40 mm with CDS & wind plex, this makes my 15th Leupold with CDS & NEVER had a problem with the system.

Most of my hunting is in the mountains so should i give them the altitude of my hunting place or just my home at bottom of mountain. Of just in between? Did you just give them the altitude of the range you tested the scope on? And also did you just give an average temp of the farm u tested it

First I want to say thanks for the quick response and to say I enjoy your videos. FYI - my grandmother was born in Australia in a covered wagon during the gold rush and I am sure I have relatives there but have no idea who they may be, sadly so. I do know a relative was a botanist for the Queen's garden (probably around 1900) and has a scholarship in his name - Cronin :-) I am having a Ruger Precision Gen 2 in .308 delivered next week and I am researching on what scope to get for it. I am looking at the Leupold vx31 - 4.5-14x50 Duplex Reticle being it looks like it may do well with the rifle and the price of $459 but I am not purchasing until I know I am getting the right scope. Again I am a rookie with scopes. My range has steel out to 500yds and there is a new part they put in out to 850yds which I would like to try at some point. Do you think I would do well with this scope or do you suggest another scope? Thanks
@dredge1103
@dredge1103 7 жыл бұрын
I may answer my own question but the vx3i 6.5-20x50 has 77 MOA of adjustment and that and the 20X would get out to 800 yds or more. Is that correct? If I would get the 6.5-20x50 30mm can you suggest what rings I will need to for the Ruger Precision?
@ozziereviews
@ozziereviews 7 жыл бұрын
I'd recommend using a ballistic calculator (Hornady have one on their website for free) and put in the calibre you're going to use and the distance you wish to shoot, then you can see the total MOA adjustment required for the various distances. As for rings on the Ruger Precision, you'll want extra-high most likely in order to give you the correct height for your sight alignment and objective clearance on your scope, so have a look at these to go with your 30mm Leupold www.nioa.com.au/products/view/LE57555

Kin Folk Also going with some of Bushnell Elite tactical series, you get a great optic, with real nice target turrets. They are great scopes. Also looking at Leupolds LRP line as well. You want the tactical turrets for the type of shooting your looking at. Not saying the others won't work, but these are more geared towards the Hunter. Really take your time and research what you would buy. In all honesty, I'd stay away from the CDS turrets, for that kind of shooting. Because eventually, for lrp shooting. You will want to try different rounds, or hand loading. And you don't have to worry about a target getting a whif of ya, and bolting to the next county. Stick with using mils or moa reticles and turrets matching. If you don't understand them right now. Do some reading, or some good videos on here will give you the just of it. Also, you can start out with a good cellphone app. Strelok pro is what I use and it is stunningly accurate. And a cheap wind gauge to start with might help you out too. Plus learning to read mirage, and other stuff. Once you get dialled in on what round your using. Get a 10 shot average of your velocities. Know your environmental data. Strelok will do this for you on the pro version. Start shooting. And have fun! The wind will be the tricky part. But as long as you got your shooting fundamental's down, you'll learn that too. And it's a blast. First time I heard the delayed ring of a 1000 yard gong. It was very fun. And then ya gotta go for 1200 yards and on and on. Very addictive and pricey. But a great hobby. Cheers

@bulldograu1
@bulldograu1 6 жыл бұрын
200 yds is a good compromise for western hunting. It is known that you will be sighting in at 1.5" to 2" high at 100 yds to attain a 200 yard zero. So if you shoot at 75 to 150 yds just hold dead on your target and it will impact within a 2" radius of that point of aim. This is plenty close enough for big game. If your trying to shoot the head off a ground squirrel for some reason then you might want to hold on his chin.

Is why wherever you go, you sight in at your hunting area and make sure your zero is good there and not at some range half way across the country with some other amunition you may have used at the range. It amazes me every year, how many hunters miss or worse! wound an animal simply because they don't take the time to sight in thier rifle at the location they are hunting at. I suppose I shouldn't be amazed at all, taking into consideration how many really could care less these days. But yeah cds seems gimmicky. BUt then again. you don't have to use the cds and simply use the scope like you would all others.

Nice video mate, however, the problem is CDS system is can not be reliable for real life hunting conditions, you are perfectly aware of geography and weather when you are shooting in your farm (angels of the shots you take, weather, elevation, humidity,...). For example if you try to shoot at a heart and lung area of any animal downhill in a steep angle you can easily see how CDS will fail on you.(same goes for uphill too.) The key thing in a successful hunt is to know your rifle,your load , your scope and shoot within point of blank of your rifle`s caliber.
@Kman31ca

Mohamad Karimi His range finder compensates for up-down hill shooting and will give the actual range he should be shooting when at sat 35 degrees down hill. As for weather, as long as it's close enough, it will put the bullet within a 6" kill zone on a deer.

True, and the same goes for downhill as well. Gravity works the same on a projectile regardless of shooting up/down.

I bought one of these scopes , and after putting on my rifle I found that it was so blurry zoomed above ten power , that I could not even see the bullseye on a target at 100 yards ,,, I took it off my rifle and bought a bushnell and have never looked back ,, I will never buy another Leupold

@@SuAmigoElilegal yes that side focus is the key to scopes with above 10 X I have many old leopold scopes that are great scopes,with adjustable focus ,, and I love them , but this scope I took back and showed the store owner and ask them to send it back and they said they was nothing wrong with it ,,so I sold it.
