I want to clarify. In the spots that I didn't go super heavy with sand, after one good rain most of that had washed down into the grass and wasn't visible. The spots that I went heavy actually have settled as well after one rain, and I expect to continue to settle after more rain. If you do not want to kill your lawn and have to reseed, I suggest doing a little sand at a time and over time your lawn will build up the low spots and be smoother.

I was over at my nieces house and the guy down the road was getting his lawn re-furbished by a profession lawn care company. Sequence of events that I observed - 1. mow low catching clippings 2. thatch 3. pick up thatch. 4. aerate lawn 5. large riding machine (kind of like a mower with a drop spreader on back) spread top soil. 6. same machine brushes instead of blades brushed top soil into lawn (multiple passes) 7. over seed lawn 8. irrigate for germination and growth. IMHO totally doable by a competent DIY'er. It took most of the day and you could probably rent a machine like that. The rest of it would be having all your ducks in a row ready for the next step. A month later - beautiful lush green carpet of a lawn.

Nice to finally see one of these on a longer lawn! The short cut lawns that everyone else has been leveling on weren’t super helpful for my yard.

Just do a little at a time and work it in with a push broom. I went heavy in spots. The spots I went lighter are already growing through after one rain

The Lawn Whisperer nice! Good to know. I did a full renovation last fall and got it mostly level but still some settling that has made it pretty bumpy again. My wife is just starting to get used to me mowing every 4 days or so, not sure she’d be ready for me hauling sand all over the place when overall it looks mostly smooth.

@@TheLawnWhisperer I have a bumpy lawn too but my lawn is clayish and cracking so I can't use sand to top it off. It'll turn to cement. What's the best kind of soil to level it? Also, when is the best time to level a lawn? I'm planning to do it in the fall. Is that timing ok? Thanks a lot.😁

@@JoeE. From other places I've seen online, if you're working with a cool season grass, fall is the best time because the grass has less heat to stress it and can grow enough to overcome the leveling still.

When I did this the first time, I mixed my lawn seed in with the sand and used chain fencing I dragged it around with my lawn tractor. I’m going to do my backyard next

Glad you showed this because too many in the lawn care KZfaq community have gone overboard with the reel mowing and lost touch with the majority of their average audience that they grew with. I kind of thought based on my research that this is not the same as leveling with top soil in thicker grass types but from my own experience in leveling the lawn in small sections with top soil if you hit it during heavy Spring growth it will punch right through the soil on its own.

@@FJB2020 Just curious. Don't mean to stir the pot. But are you talking about the cool season turf folks or the warm season or both? Us bermuda guys mow that low because bermuda loves it around 1/2" to 1". An inch and a half is as long as I'd even think about maintaining my bermuda lawn. I only ask because as someone who creates videos, I value the feedback of viewers. Thanks.

Someone may have pointed this out already, but if you would've installed the loops where the rope is attached on the front instead of the top, that drag wouldn't flip over. I love your videos. They inspire me to step my yard game up!

For future reference you want the sand inside the sled filled all the way across with a metal screen on the bottom. You load the sled and drag it back and forth till empty. That way you don't get huge piles, and clumps in lawn. Less labor to in end. Also 2 2x4 runners long ways facing you with rounded edges really helps eliminate tipping on the sled.

Your sand looks a bit wet, it’s so much easier to spread dry but with that said it’s also really hard to dry it out without hot temperatures and a larger surface area to store it. Even a day or two of humidity can bring the moisture level of the sand up too high. But from what I can see from the video (cause I’m not there in person) the sand looks a little damp which makes spreading it quite hard

@@johnp82 leveling fescue is much tougher because it’s hard to work material below the tall canopy of the grass, which also could cause smothering of the grass if you’re not careful. He did a great job, as usual!

I know time and manpower all must come together and everything is hard to coordinate, but letting that sand dry out would have cut your work load quite a bit. Wet sand doesn't spread easy. It's gonna look nice....good job!

From the video. What seemed to work the best, was that wooden spreader on damp sand. I can see the broom being difficult on wet sand. Sand overall seems less than ideal to level grass though. Screened top soil is best it seems. Just plan on regrowing grass al together.

I have heard if you level more than 2 inches deep, you should use a 50/50 mix of soil and sand bc the sand will get hot and kill/burn the grass if it absorbs that much of a layer of sand. The soil acts as a temperature buffer.

A Man l like your videos. I wanna give you a tip. Use a blower, it will spread the heavily sand spots more evenly. Sand must be dry though. Just blow in a grass cutting pattern🤷 PS don't tell noooobody!

Haha if you brush it in well it will grow through it. The spots that I went lighter are already growing through after one rain. We have rain coming the next 3 or 4 days so I will post a follow up pic. I think outside of the deeper spots it will be fine.

I think if you move the eye screws to the bottom 2x4, it won't tip over anymore because then your rope is at the bottom.

Before anybody level, you must scalp your lawn as close to bare soil as possible, that will make i easier to level the lawn.

It depends how heavy you go with the sand. If you do lighter sand and work it in with a broom or rake it will mostly grow through. I went HEAVY, which is why I am seeding

Best video I've found yet, for my situation. Will be taking this on with my TTTF (JGBBU, to be exact). I don't know that I can get to 1.25, closest I can safely get is probably 1.75" but we're going to find out. Anxiety is also around a 12. Other videos have said once you start, you'll need to keep adding sand every year. Do you plan on doing that? Looking forward to the follow up videos!

Do you think adding the sand/soil/compost in a compost roller and rolling that around the lawn would make the job a lot easier to spread rather than using a shovel/wheelbarrow?

I wouldn't recommend using compost or a compost roller the holes in the roller are two big for the sand and dirt... 70% sand 30% soil mix... I just scoop 4 shovels loads of sand and 2 shovels loads of soil, mix them in a wheelbarrow don't just dump the load of sand/soil mix in one spot it's just too much work. spread it out on the lawn in the low spots, and then just use the leveling rake I didn't need to use a broom. I had some dead spots in my yard so I added grass seed before I started and then after I leveled it.

I have a zoysia lawn so reseeding is just about pointless as it would take a year or more for results. This makes any heavy leveling a suicide mission. So, I started it last weekend.

Why did you use sand & not dirt? Will grass still grow if you put seed on sand? What about pre-emergent? Will that stick to sand?

Dirt breaks down so it will eventually be in level again. Sand is the best leveling agent. Yes seed will grow in sand. Yes pre emergent can be watered in and used in sand

You can use topsoil. Sand has better leveling properties and will help better with drainage

You needed to make the back of your leveler longer to prevent the tipping… just saying I get to the point All the time when I’m like why is t this working and then after I sit back and look at something I’m like duh why didn’t I do it this way you probably already figured it out. But I hope someone else might be helped by this video and my comment

Roughly, how many hours a week or weekend do you spend on your lawn? From maintenance to mowing? Is your lawn your hobby?

I only watched one video so far. Do you work for for a golf course? work for a landscaper, or own a landscape company. that would make sense.

Meanwhile, waiting for perfect lawn..... kids grew up and divorced. (Sorry, I'm bored and for whatever Algorithmic reason this video popped up as recommended for me. My father only taught me a few things in life 1) Plant your corn early 2) Never piss into the wind 3) Never buy anything off of Television 4) Always look at your girlfriends mother before marry her 5) LIFE IS TOO SHORT TO WORRY ABOUT HOW GREEN YOUR GRASS IS!

Hey!! I'm a beautiful lawn lover and I'm taking notes and applying all of your tips in my grass. My husband doesn't care about it that much so I'm on my own on it, guide by your videos! I'm just a little but lost on the steps now. If don't mind to clarify them to me it would be amazing! Just applied herbicides to kill the weed and bought the aerating and detacher machines, fertilizers and seeds. For your video i found out that my yard is cover in bumps so I'll fix that too. I just don't know what come 1st. Aerating, detaching, over seeding, fertilizing and then leveling? Right order of steps? Or should i level before everything?

Does this have to be done with sand or could you use a bunch of top soil and achieve the same thing?

Man... I've just gotten into my lawn (not even a full year) fescue/ bluegrass mix... and I'm glad to see a leveling video. Your soundtrack is awesome... I'm Liked/ Subscribed, now! What kind of mower do you recommend for the shortcut/ no scalping? I doubt my rotary does it as clean.

A reel mower if you're wanting to cut super low. I am a toro fan though.
