Leveling Your Bathroom Floor for Easy Tub Installation | Step by Step Guide

Starting out a bathroom renovation with a level floor will make every aspect of installation easier 👍 Especially tub installation. In this video I am preparing a bathroom for a Caste Iron Tub Installation. The existing floor was about 5/8" out of level. Floor leveler is the easiest & best method to fix this
💫Primer💫
It's important to buy the specific primer required by the brand of leveler you use
My favorite to date is Ardex Liquid Backer Board - bit.ly/476ZjuB
The primer required is Ardex P51 - bit.ly/3QyT1yG
I find this leveler to be very fluid & creamy, which allows it to flow nicely & even out easily
Leveling any amount of deviation is worth while, but I'd say its most important when the floor is more than 1/4" out of level
Anything over 1/4" will make all setting of fixtures & tile much harder
Simply use a 1/2" nap roller and work the primer into subfloor
Keep in mind leveler can only be poured within the first 24 hours
So if you prime, plan to level next day, or add another layer of primer
Primer also takes awhile to dry
Over OSB it should be ready in an hour
Concrete will take much longer
The surface can be tacky, but not wet

If there's one thing I've learned the hard way 😆 It's that floor leveler loves to seep down any crack or crevise
Spray foam is helpful for big gaps & around areas like a toilet flange
Seal bottom plate with caulking
Access area for tub drain, another area to completely seal 👍
For very thin pours under 1/4" this is not completely necessary
But all manufactures do recommend having an expansion joint
Sill plate foam is perfect to maintain a space
This is the key point to creating a level floor with self-leveler
Use screws to indicate the level height needed
Leveler should be a minimum 1/8" throughout entire bathroom
Find high spot of bathroom, set screw at 1/8"
And reference a laser for setting all screws
Huepar Laser
A screed smoother will help push the leveler to where needed
Make sure to create or buy a 6 gallon bucket to mix 50lb bags
Super important to mix leveler to specified water ratio
Measure each pour
Mix thoroughly for 2 minutes
4 bags of leveler used for this 5' x 9' bathroom
1/2" out of level

LOL- those tubs are a beast to handle. My 1970s home bathroom has one- dreading the task of removing.

For the heavy tub you could use a mover's wood dollies or trucks. These are flat wood platforms with 4 wheels on them for moving furniture around. You could put one under the center of the tub and be able to move around the tub and position it pretty easily.

One tip. Take your drill. Screw your first screw down to 1/8. Then raise your laser so that it hits a very visible part of your drill. with the drill on the screw that is screwed down to 1/8th height, place a piece of painters tape where the laser is hitting your drill. then mark the laser line. Now all you have to do is drill each screw down till it hits the mark from the laser on the painter's tape mark. No need to manually check each screw for height.

Hey Steve, have you ever tried Laticrete's NXT Level Plus? Just wondering how it compares, easier for me to get than Ardex stuff. Minimum depth over wood is 1/4" vs Ardex which allows 1/8" over concrete or wood. But not seeing much difference otherwise on paper.

So I might be doing this a little backwards. Tub is already set, in mortar and is level. However, the floor isnt…. The floor (the tub) is listed by about 1/2” on the far right side. I’m afraid this MIGHT be seen after installing the floors? What is the acceptable level to the point I should float the tub?
