In this video we demonstrate two different methods of how to level a twin axle caravan. Using caravan ramps and using the Lock n Level system. Here's what we found.

Hi guys, each system has its own merits, don’t be too dismissive of the lock+level in certain situations it’s a godsend, we have one and wouldn’t be without it, seems a bit of a faff at first but they really can be good after you’ve used it a few times, thanks for sharing.

As you say Pete, just found it a bit of a faff compared to the ramps but everyone has their own preference 👍🏻 Best wishes, Keith & Michele.

Hi Keith &Michelle, I use the Lock n Level in my single axle Swift Eccles and it is great. It only cost £90 (coz I bought it at the caravan exhibition). I found it more accurate levelling than ramps and I haven’t had to inflate it to 30psi. I like the idea of the wood underneath. Up to now I’ve used an old piece of linoleum. Will probably change now. Thanks for all the videos, keep them coming. Cheers. Kenny

Great to finally see somebody doing a video to show how to use ramps. Not that I have had to use them yet but I have always been wary of the caravan "dropping" off the end of the first ramp but your video reassures me it wont happen. We have four motor movers on out van, Elddis Avante but still have room for the jacking point so we can put both alko locks on. Thanks again for the video. I was contemplating on getting the lock and level but after this I am not going to bother. Take care and happy travels.

Great information for twin axle levelling. It took me ages to figure out that two small ramps is the way to go. Hopefully by now you have discovered that not only is towing a twin axle a dream but reversing on to the pitch is so much easier because the van no longer turns as fast and is easier to control.

Hi Keith and Michele superb informative video, I don’t have motor movers on my TA and I use ordinary ramps to level. I fit my Alko with the aid of a Kojak Jack and bracket. At £200 I’d been concerned about theft in the storage yard if I had to leave the lock and level under the wheels of my van. Thieves wouldn’t be too fussy in how they lifted the van to steal the L&V risking damage to van too. You’ve made the right choice in the low tech approach. Best wishes.

The problem I see with ramps even with a single axle is when fitting an Al Ko lock. To get the lock reciever between the wheel spokes you end up driving up or down the ramp putting the caravan out of level. We always book hardstanding pitches. I carry a small light weight hand shovel and heap the stones/gravels into a plateau to correct height, drive caravan on and align the reciever. Thanks for a very good demonstation Keith. Best Regards. Rob

Always had my eye on Lock n Level - I’ve only got single axle Think tbh I would call it a Faff , apart from the weight I’d also considered the Milenco wheel jack leveller thingy but that looks hard work too Great honest no frills no angles video - appreciate you making it Kind regards HOWARD

Great video, thanks. I'd add a couple of points. 1) Inflation time from flat to maximum is just a couple of minutes with a decent pump plugged into your tow vehicle, and of course you don't always need to pump it up to maximum height. 2) If you only have the ramps you won't have the added bonus of using the L'n'L to change a flat. 3) We use a couple of cheap rubber mats from Lidl to go under the L'n'L on stony ground. When we go away for the winter using a couple of those ramps would be good for long term pitching. Thanks for the idea, I already have one (our previous caravan was a SA) so I only need to purchase one more. KH

Hi Keith and Michelle. We owned a twin axle for a while. Two things, we used the fiamma levelling Ramps and the best thing to do is to get the van in position and put them next to the wheels drive the van backwards and drive over both ramps at the same time. We very nearly bought the lock n level but we sold the van before we bought one. I highly recommend using TWO Alko locks at once as they can still drive your caravan away with just one on. You can just use some of the awning foam tiles. They work really well. They have been proven to work for long periods of time. Our friend had his van on a rocky seasonal pitch for a while year and it never lost pressure. If I was you I would be using the lock n level every time with two Alko locks. Our insurance required us to always have both of them on. But if a pain but saves the van being stolen. Hope that helps and if you have any questions just send me a message. Cheers, Oliver.

Great video, after my first caravan trip trying to use ramps, the motor movers kept bashing when on the ramp, put me off and found really hard to level. Think I will purchase the lock and level, because our insurance states we have have the alko wheel locks on, this said it will be Much easier to do. Great video, I’ve learnt a lot recently watching your videos and others on how to make caravanning easier. Our first trip out was to Silverdale in torrential rain and storm winds, we really enjoyed so surely if we can endure that weather it will be easier 😂

Good video, I’ve used the lock n level for a couple of years now, even on so called” level pitches”. I found when I used ramps and as previously commented, to level the van and fit the Alko wheel lock is pretty much impossible and if your like me and the wife we use a lot of CL sites which are quieter and sometimes more secluded and you really want to be fitting all security, including the wheel lock and if you have ramps this is not going to happen, also more importantly, in the unfortunate event of having your caravan stolen from a site whatever the size you’ll also invalidate your insurance policy! Buy yourself a lock n level caravan owners, it’s worth the money and not the hassle.

Great stuff Keith and Michelle. We bought a lock n level twin late last year and had it shipped to Australia, but sadly with COVID restrictions we haven’t been able to use it yet apart from a test at home. We don’t have motor movers so the LnL is the best solution for us. Tried the ramps but didn’t like them. Cheers Brian and Sue Carter.

Great video, thank you! We recently made the jump to a twin axle and have and motor movers like you. I’ve got ramps but think I may need the lock and level as well, mainly to line up the Alko but also to change a tyre. I’m also not convinced moving forward the amount needed to use the ramp systems is always possible due to pitch size. I would rather avoid lock and level due to the cost but might have to bite the bullet. Thanks again for a great video!

With a single axle caravan on a loose surfaced pitch, whilst trying to climb a ramp, I have found the caravan pirouetting around the ramp and the none ramped wheel moving, instead of climbing the ramp. Because of this I bought a Milenco mechanical leveller. This leveller does have a poor ratcheting lever supplied with it however, so i dispensed with it and I bought a drill drive to a square socket drive and use a 15 mm socket with a battery powered portable drill and the drill drive, to raise and lower it. The drill drive to socket square drive ( set of 3 with different square drive sizes from screwfix is £3.60 and a spare 15mm socket is less than £2 from b&q ). With this system it is now simple, very controllable and very quick to raise and lower to level the caravan side to side. Much easier than a ramp and definitely easier and quicker than a lock n level but heavier than the ramps but I think it is worth it. I also use the drill with a steadies drill driver, so I already take the drill for this purpose anyway. With the Milenco leveller, i can now level the caravan side to side, with the caravan handbrake applied, along with the none lifted wheel chocked, on both sides of the wheel and obviously the motor mover disconnected and turned off, which is safer in my opinion.

we only have a single axle van , but no brained really. The one big plus for the air level device is if you have the Akko through the wheel lock. You can get the lock on & the level. We invested in the EP hydraulic system. Best move ever, just press the button & wait- sorted👍

Think the principle of lock’n level is good but think it’s a bit of a faff particularly if you got to watch out for sharp stones and take a board as well. I’ll stick to my ramps and keep using a trolley jack for the Alko locks. Great well informed video.

The one big advantage with Lock'n'Level is if you are fitting your Alco locks, very difficult with a ramp very hard to stop on the ramp with both the caravan level and the lock lining up. But with the Lock'n'Level it's easy roll onto bag line up Alco lock pump up done

We have the lock and level for our single axle caravan. You just position the caravan where you want it, in a suitable position so you can get the Alko lock in place, shuffle the caravan, slide the L&L in, bring the caravan back, fit the Alko lock and then inflate and level. The point is being able to secure the caravan when at a site. This could be an insurance issue if you don't fit the Alko lock and the caravan goes missing from site. When we stay onsite at steam fairs, you lock everything there, not the same as a fully serviced club pitch.

Hi Tony, Karen, Colin and Elly. It was lovely meeting you at Polmanter earlier this year. If the steadies are standard fit (not self levelling) then it is Not a good idea to use them to keep the caravan off the ground as most are fitted directly to the floor. This could warp or damage the floor! Hope this helps, Keith & Michele

Hello Keith and Michelle The air bag system looks good but it doesn’t look like it lifts the caravan up very high. We find the yellow ramps commonly sold are sometimes barely high enough to correct the slope of the site .....thinking of milenco bridge and quad set which seems to give higher and gentle incline BUT it’s what to do about fitting the alko locks once levelled on the ramp.....trolly Jack but the MM is engaged or of not handbrake is on so can’t spin wheels if jacked up perhaps hold three caravan on wheel chocks but that might be tricky to hold the weight bearing in mind the caravan is detached from the car to deploy the MM to get it up the ramp? Just trying to work out the logic around levelling and subsequent alko lock fitting to the twin on site or in event of puncture Any thoughts on how u are getting on We have just reserved our 2020 645 which we had dithered over getting for at least 18 months 🤣

Hi S H, Huge congratulations on your new 645 🎉🥂🍾 You won’t be disappointed, we absolutely love ours! We’ve only used the levelling ramps twice since filming this video (haven’t been out much!) They worked fine on both occasions. The Lock n Level will raise the caravan higher but haven’t had the need to use it yet. If you only have the ramps is it impossible to fit both the alko locks. Im sure some insurance companies insist that both have to be fitted. Like you we are getting a twin axle with quad moovers so jacking is not an option?
@keithandmichele

Hi Henry, We have two different locks for each set of wheels. In our opinion it’s too difficult to align both sides to fit the Alko to each one. Fortunately, our insurance company are happy with the locks we’re using. Hope this helps, sending our best wishes to you, Keith & Michele.

Hi Keith & Michelle, my van although a different model, 635 has the same 4 wheel motor mover system fitted and in order to fit it I am informed that they had to remove the jacking points. Can you advise me what type of jack you use and where you position it in order to fit the second al-co wheel lock? Kind regards John
@keithandmichele
@keithandmichele 3 жыл бұрын
Hi John, The simplest way to jack up a twin axle caravan, raising only one wheel, is by using the lock n level system. Although in our video we implied we would be selling our lock n level, we have in fact kept it in case we need to jack one wheel up in case of a puncture. The only other option that we know of is to use a trolley jack. One downside to the lock n level is that if you are using it to align the wheel for the Alko chassis lock, the system has to remain in situ until your next trip out. Hope this helps, best wishes, Keith & Michele.
@keithandmichele
@keithandmichele 3 жыл бұрын
Hi John, The lock n level system for twin axle caravans is a two section system. The two halves can be inflated independently of each other. Position the caravan on the lock n level & align the rear wheel with the Alko chassis bolt & put the lock on. Then blow up the rear section only of the lock n level. This will raise the van sufficiently for the front wheel to be off the ground allowing you to rotate it & align the front chassis lock. When both locks are on you simply let down the lock n level, leaving it in place. Using a bottle jack would be very tricky as you have to jack the caravan up on the axle as close as possible to the wheel. You will find very little clearance to raise the jack. Hope this helps to clarify it for you. Keith & Michele.

Hi Keith, I recently tried to level the caravan using the ramps( twin axle).. found 1 issue if you have any input would be great.... Levelled the van using the mover and ramps to a position I was happy with ( level)... I then applied the handbrake on the van. Then I took the mover off the wheels, the van rolled backwards a good way then caught. In the demonstration you didn't mention if you left the mover in position? Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you
@keithandmichele
@keithandmichele 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Darren, When reversing a caravan, the brakes have an auto engage/disengage system. This allows the wheels to roll backwards without applying the brakes when reversing . To engage the breaking system after reversing, you just need to roll the caravan forward a few inches. From what you say, we can only assume that you reversed using the motormover to position your caravan on the ramp, it is therefore our recommendation that you manoeuvre the caravan forward up the ramps, this will then ensure that the handbrake will be at its optimum efficiency. It’s also vitally important when your caravan has reached its correct position to chock the wheels for added stability/safety. Hope this helps, sending our best wishes to you, Keith & Michele.

@@keithandmichele many thanks for the reply Keith.. no I did infact drive straight up the ramp as in your demo (forward).. 1 thing I didn't do was choc the wheels what so ever. Maybe this was my problem? I was expecting the handbrake to hold the caravan in position. This could be the next move I attempt.. I have a service booked for mid September so will also ask about the handbrake also.. many thanks

Hi Liz, This is a difficult one for us to answer. Depending on the mtplm (weight of your caravan) we would strongly recommend 2L or over. Can we point you in the direction of www.towcar.info where you can match your car (or car your thinking of buying) with your caravan. Another factor to consider is towball limit permissible on the car. The above website will also give you this information. Hope this helps, sending best wishes, Keith & Michele.

@keithandmichele
@keithandmichele 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Happy Panda, You’ll need a minimum 10m length food grade hose & connectors (like Hozelock) to connect the hose to the water tap on your pitch bollard. Not a necessity but useful to have is a 4m flexible waste pipe. Again, not essential but if you’re thinking of using serviced pitches more frequently, you may wish to invest in an aquaroll float valve. With this you can connect your hose & the aquaroll will automatically replenish with water. Hope this helps, best wishes, Keith & Michele.

If anyone has the budget I’d 100% recommend the e&p hydraulic levelling system, at £3k it isn’t cheap but I can guarantee once you’ve had it you will never want another caravan without it, if I didn’t have it though I’d likely go for the lock n level as we have to have both alko locks fitted for insurance.

What a superb question. Firstly, the Al-Ko secure locking receiver(s) are only fitted to the near side of the Caravan. Assuming you have to raise the offside, you would have to use additional lock(s) on the raised side. Hope this helps, sending our best wishes, Keith & Michele

Two problems with the 4 wheel movers 1) as you say there is no jacking point so what do you do if you get a flat tyre ? 2) if you can’t jack up how do you put your Alko locks on ? You can’t jack up the steadies they aren’t for that & you will damage your floor, you can’t fit a low profile trolley jack between the wheels or at either end as the mover’s in the way, you can’t use a bottle jack it’s too precarious & if it slips you damage your van especially around the suspension. I don’t work for them but it’s got to be E&P all the way with the remote. I’ve explored all options this is the only one & the best one & it also aids anti-theft.

Milenco Quattro Bridge for Twin Axle Caravans This is the name of the other levelers on amazon
@SH-xq4dq
@SH-xq4dq 3 жыл бұрын
So with the Milenco bridge Michael is it a case of get the twin on the ramps and level , then get trolly Jack under axel to spin the wheels to fit both alko wheel locks and return to the ramp position? If on motor mover can’t spin wheels if both engaged to hold caravan in place , can’t deploy the hand brake as that too prevents wheel rotation, to use motor mover already detached from car So is the only option left to chock the wheels on side not on ramps before jacking to get locks on ? All sounds a bit tricky we are about to go from single to twin axel and just trying to work the logic out ? Like the Quattro system as the quad gives more height than our yellow ramps used on our single axel but even with them some sights the side to side slope was more than the yellow ramp could handle ie not tall enough hence interest in Quattro and the jacking questions Any thoughts ......anyone ??🤷‍♂️
