The levels of processing theory, proposed by Craik and Lockhart, suggests that memory retention depends on the depth of processing. Shallow processing involves basic features, like the appearance or sound of words, and leads to weaker memory traces. Deeper processing involves semantic analysis, where meaning and connections to other information are considered, resulting in stronger memory retention. Essentially, the more meaningful and elaborate the processing, the better the memory will be.
