This is the follow-up to the original "Levi's 501 Shrink-to-Fit Project" video I posted almost four months ago when I got two new pairs of 501 Shrink-to-Fits. After I started washing them, I wanted to really wear into the jeans so that they had a real custom fit and feel to them by the time I made this follow-up. In conclusion, Levi's suggestion about the first washing of the jeans was right on the money:
After wearing the new, stiff, unwashed jeans for as long as I could stand it, I soaked them in lukewarm water with a capful of Dr. Bronner's Peppermint Castile Soap for about 20 or 30 minutes, giving them a good "hand wash" while I was at it. (A lot of blue dye washed off the jeans, and my tub looked like I slaughtered a Smurf in it.) Then I let them hang dry. Once they were damp, I put them on and wore them until they were completely dry. I did this for the first few washings, and it worked perfectly.
Now I machine wash them cold (inside out) and hang them dry. All is well with a pair of jeans that now fit like they were made for me.

OK, two washings in. The second washing was different as I only did the legs. And I used much warmer water, almost hot. The waist was good. But the legs needed tightening. I knew I'd get some capillary effect but didn't worry. The water was cold by the time it crept up. It worked REALLY well. So you can "customize" the washing too for just the legs or waist. I just used a hanger with clips and dunked them 3/4 high on the thighs. Worked like a charm. Might be of value to some of your readers

So a couple of weeks ago I happened upon this video. After watching it I had to watch your original 501 stf video. And then I had to watch them all. A few days later I ordered a new pair of 501's and when they arrived I followed your instructions. I'm so happy in my jeans now and so happy to find your video channel. Thank you George :)

Thanks for the information - had forgotten all about shrink to fit Levi's. Unfortunately I haven't worn Levi's in well over 20 years since I discovered Wrangler jeans. I like the fit of them better and the price is about half of that of Levi's. Maybe it has to do with me getting older and my body has ummm, changed shape - yea, let's go with that. Anyway, thank you again for the information. Killer little smile at the end, by the way.

I've been wearing Levi's shrink to fit jeans since the 1970s. Back in the day I would do the whole bath tub shrinking project. It is messy and a big time commitment. Instead, I now just machine wash them and wear them wet until they dry. It produces pretty good results. The jeans do tend to give with wear, they are a little baggier after several wearings. I have on occasion resized the jeans, they seem to stretch a bit when wet and conform back to my body shape.

HEY have fun with this guys---The tub works but don't just throw em in the water. you gotta be wearing em! In the summer, I much prefer wearing a new pair all day or 2, unwashed, then I'll just go swimming with em on, in a nearby lake (lucky to have many options in Minnesota.) It's fun, feels awesome, and you get a work out during it, some girls dig it too.

OK, my jeans are hanging outside after their peppermint bath. You're right, the blue carnage (well, that's not even close to being etymologically harmonious, but...whatever) was terrifying. I kept second guessing on water temp. Didn't do a ton of "washing" but gently agitated the jeans. Light wringing. I actually wore mine for EIGHT months before this wash. Not every day, of course, but at least 50 days of wearing them. I'm excited to see how they turn out.

Not looking to cuff my jeans so just asking...Thanks...great video...also can you do this with any jeans or just special denim?

I do something that no one I know of ever did. I put them on and sit stand or kneel by a heater or radiator. I use a heater now because I live in San Diego and don't have a radiator. You can also spay them with water, put them on and stand or kneel by a Heater. I use a Parabolic Type Heater now. You keep wearing them, Spay them again, put them on, kneel bye a Heater and keep doing that. Guaranteed they will form fit to your body.

Bought a pair of Levi's 1947 501 XX selvedge W 30". Because the waist size turned out to be far too big, I decided not to wear them, but proceed straight ahead to a first wash. Today I tried to shrink them in a tub filled with very hot water for about an hour. After I squeezed the jeans out, I did the 'sandwich'-trick with two towels and then put them on half-wet. They haven't shrunk to the desired size yet (which ideally would be a W 27"). Any suggestions how I could achieve further shrinkage?

Hey, I normally get a 33 W (a tiny big) and 32 L (a tiny long) in Levis. What size would you suggest I get for the shrink to fits? Also, how long do you wear these before washing? And by live in them does that mean literally never take them off? like ONLY wear them? Thanks a ton dude!
@georgehahnvideo
@georgehahnvideo 11 жыл бұрын
I'd suggest soaking them in hotter water (inside-out) for longer. But before you wash them again, wear them around the house and break them in, even if they're big. Give the denim a chance to "learn" your shape.

Never tried the bath tub method. I just either buy them 2 in big in the waist and 4 long and dry them in the dryer. OR, buy them 2 inches too long and normal waist then give them a cold wash and hang them up for awhile until they are just damp. The waist and pocket areas are the last to dry so you have time to stretch the waist even if the legs dry on you. Then I put them on while still damp. If the waist is too tight, I do squats until it loosens, then tuck in a thick shirt or two and wear them some more to loosen the waist up to a perfect fit....plus you don't have the rough denim rubbing on your waist....works perfect

George Hahn thanks nice, good info, I also want to tell you something I notice about the difference in the first video an the follow up. In the first your demeanor was vary interesting, like you didn't care if anyone watch this or not. Like a person that knows what he wants, if any body wants it or not. Say been there done that, a wiser more mature ladies man. The thrill is gone but the person is rock solid. The follow up reminds me of you watched yourself in the first one and decided to come across more light and happier persona more youthful. Just my thoughts.

Mr. Hahn, I purchased 2 pair of 501 STF's and was wondering what you would recommend in order to keep shrinking to a minimum. The fit at the waist and in the thighs are perfect as it now and I don't want to mess with that too much. I'm not real worried about the length as I can always have them hemmed if needed.

Bathe in them in warm water to get a more snug fit yet not too tight. Afterward hang dry to insure they don't shrink too severely.

MrAzteckgamer Hotter water, tumble dry warm or hot. They will shrink a lot so be warned and maybe try warm wash/dry before going hot otherwise you may end up with skinny jeans that crush your nether regions. I haven't tried the wear them while they are wet method yet as suggested, As I usually find buying one size larger in waist and length is enough for my body type after they shrink in a few washes.

"Don't put them in the drier" has applications beyond shrink-to-fit jeans. I don't hang up pants because they just take too long to dry, but I NEVER put blouses or tshirts in the drier, and WHY? Because they shrink. Even a tiny bit of shrinkage pulls them out of shape and makes them fit poorly. Next time you do a load of laundry, take a look in the lint trap of the drier. What's that, you say? Lint? It's FABRIC that has been extracted from your garment. It isn't just "fluff", it is the stuff and guts of the cloth itself that your garment is made of. It is being slowly eroded each time you dry the thing, so that over time it gets thinner and more faded, as dye also comes out along with "fluff". You have less and less of the garment you paid for and wonder why it doesn't look good any more. Jeans, I just can't stand to hang them up because of the climate I live in, it would take a month for them to dry.

I guess maybe 'Shrink to Fit' jeans aren't the best option for you and probably too much of a hassle for you considering where you reside (back east I imagine). My experience has been that the Levi's shrink to fit that have fit me perfect when following the indications that are on the label, have been to actually put them in the drier during the initial shrinkage. The way I did it though was to wash them together with a medium size load of dark clothes in the washer. Afterward, I would put them in the drier with the same load of clothes for about 10 to 12 minutes (permanent press), and then promptly remove them from the drier by interrupting the drying cycle. I'd then wear them moderately damp for from 45 minutes to an hour. The last pair of 501 Shrink To Fit's I purchased where washed and dried differently. I tried the hot bath only method, but the water is too damn hot for wearing the pair comfortably. What I did was soak them in the tub with hot water, and then I waited for the pair to cool down and them wore them. When I saw that they hadn't adequately shrunk, I boiled hot water to at least try to get the waist shrunk down, but that wasn't adequate. I did go back to the bath tub and sat in them in luke warm water. I was able to mold very cool wrinkles (whiskering) into the denim as I sat in the bath, but the jeans still did not shrink adequately. I wear the jeans today, but had to iron a small cuff at the bottom, as the length came to be a little too long, and the waist didn't shrink down as much as it should have. The end result is that that particular pair of 501's fits a little boxy and too baggy for my likes. Long story short: My original way of shrinking down 501's to fit correctly is tried and true. I don't know if where you live, humidity affects the inside of your home, but if the interior of your home mostly hosts a dry environment, then I'd suggest that you try drying raw denim in a delicate cycle with other delicates and removing them after 15 minutes. Afterward you could then just let them hang dry over your tub. This way the drip and color loss would be minimal. I try to avoid washing my 501 STF's as much as possible after the initial wash, which is probably why I have so many pairs that I wear interchangeably. It's a hassle I know, but in the end, I think that it's worth it to match up shirts with different pairs of jeans (As Levi's 501's come in a variety of colors); especially compared to purchasing pre-molded designer jeans at limited colors; while spending a lot more for each pair.

FreetownSuperstaar : Find a small hand towel with a color as similar as the pair of jeans you have. If your jeans are a light color, use a lighter colored towel; however, if your jeans are a dark color, make sure that you use a dark colored hand towel. Use a color safe liquid detergent (like woolite dark) and put a tiny bit of the liquid detergent onto a corner of the towel. Rinse in hot water, and then gently rub out the stain with that corner of your hand towel.

The poser's guide to work pants. It's sad how these jeans, which were originally designed for working men, have been adopted by urban metrosexuals and so on for the purpose of looking masculine without actually doing any of the work that working men do. And the company that makes them makes them like women's clothes-- cheaper fabric that doesn't last as long, lots of style options that include pre-washed, artifically-pre-worn, and artificially pre-soiled and dingy. For generations, these shrink-to-fit jeans were tossed in the washing machine and dried, and they came by their fit through honest work, not through arcane poser-rituals.

@grizzlygrizzle: If you want to purchase jeans that are more oriented for the working man, then I'd suggest Wrangler 13 MWZ's or 936's (13 MWZ are a little too baggy for my liking as I am slim). Since Wrangler have outer felled seems for the most part, you don't have to worry about the seems twisting or looking tacky after putting them into the drier and washing conventionally. Just my two cents. I'd agree that the newer 501 Shrink to Fit's are a lot more cheaply made while being sold more expensively. I believe that the newest 501 STF's being sold out there are 10 oz. after washing.
