Levi's 501 Shrink-to-Fit Project

Having recently purchased two new pairs of Levi's 501® Shrink-to-fit jeans ($66 for both of them, btw), I have finished the first step in Levi's suggested care steps: "Wear them as long as possible before you wash them." I've worn a pair for six straight days. Now it's time for the second step: "On the first watch, soak in a capful of Dr. Bronner's soap for 20 minutes," which I'm going to do in the bathtub. The hotter the water, the more they shrink.
Levi's mentioned that it's normal for the dye to color the water. What they didn't tell me was that my tub would look like the tub in Cabin No. 1 at the Bates Motel...

You are absolutely right about getting an accurate size by purchasing 501 STF's at your normal waist size and two sizes longer in length. I discovered this to be the best way to get an accurate fit after a few trial and error washes with older pairs I had bought. I've never followed Levi Strauss & Co.'s suggestions for properly shrinking though.

An excellent wealth of information .I have few dozen pairs of 501's collected over many years & cared for them in a slightly different methods , but my Levi's have developed nice character to my body type for a great fit.

The process I usually put a new pair of STF's through is putting them inside out in the washer on gentile cycle. I then transfer them to the dryer again on gentile cycle. Once the jeans have been in for about 12 to 15 minutes, I take them out semi damp and put them on so that they form to my legs for about an hour to an hour in a half. I then put the jeans back in the dryer to finish off the drying on gentile cycle with a load of dark clothes of course. When I take them out, I iron accordingly.

I found a Levi's website that gives a similar shrink-to-fit guide but the step after the hot water and soap was to drain the tub, cover the jeans with cold water and throw in a cup of vinegar. The vinegar sets the color making the fading process slower.

Well, I would agree with that except that 511's sit low at the waist; however, the first model of 511's that were released in 2007 or so are definitely better fitting and do suit the male form quite well, although they are still a little low sitting on the waist. Another type of jeans that I've found fit nicely like the old 501's are the Wrangler 936 slim fit model jeans.

Ok, now I've heard of getting in the tub w/ them on and THEN letting them dry on you. But I've never heard of wearing for several days first before you do anything else to them. Hoped you'd at least gotten them wet for us. Have you used this procedure before?

i usually just turn them indise out and wash in the machine with cold water, then put them in the dryer inside out still. i like mine a little on the baggy side though

Air dry the Dreyer will shrink them or use a fan

I used to buy 501's but now the only fit that's anything like the old 501's is the 511 slim .......

Once you shrink them to fit, never put them in the washing machine. They will shrink even further.

yeah but what the hell do you do when you're a 33 in the waist but your 6'4'' an pants are already too short at 33x34. this world isn't made for tall people

graham yarmas You go to levi.com and find your size. Since you and I are the same height, I'd suggest trying to find a pair that are 38 in length, and maybe for you go 34 in the waist. Keep in mind that not all STF's shrink the same amount and if the length doesn't shrink as much as you want... well you can always cuff them. A luxury that tall people like us normally don't have. Also don't be discouraged if they don't have a lot of variety in your size. Levi had a crazy summer sale going on and a lot of the good picks for this season have already been sold out.

These pants are stupid ..you should be able to wear them without all the hassle ..never buying these again damn cardboard pants..i prefer the original 501
