It wasn't that. He just didn't have any personality in AEW. That wasn't his fault though. He got stuck with a bad gimmick tag team and TK dropped the ball with their booking.

@thestonedgeek8928 If he was pushed property in AEW, he'd be hella over, but naaaahhhh. Cause he wasn't a small workrate wrestler, they made him as boring as possible. Hell, a similar thing is happening to Wardlow. He was crazy over after beating MJF, even winning the TNT championship, but because a large guy with a muscular physique was organically over, and not some small workrate guy like Pockets or Wheeler Useless, his momentum was screwed to no return, and he's literally returned to being a big dumb bodyguard after literally breaking away from one in another faction, and it ain't even his fault.

The name change is fine. He really got nowhere as BPJ Jr. on the indies. And as much as his Dad really began to change the game in WWE, he passed before getting to the point that a legacy wrestler bearing his surname has the credibility of an Orton, Rhodes, Flair etc.

Let's be honest, the name sucks. When your real name is Brian Pillman Jr. any other name is going to pale in comparison. It's WWE not wanting to reference his father and/or let him use his real name for royalties when he leaves WWE.
