We review and celebrate the long gone Lexus LFA, a car briefly made from 2011-2012. With only 500 manufactured, this extremely rare and largely misunderstood car, has mystique. We attempt to break down and tell the story of what made it special. The LFA despite the badge speaks a universal language. Whether you are a Ferrari, Porsche, Chevy or Ford fan there is something in this video you will appreciate. If you are big fan of the Toyota Supra, 86, LC500, F Products you may wonder if this Lexus is the next $1,000,000 car?

@@turbopickle9720 That's true to a point, but there are economies of scale when you produce more than 500 cars. Toyota absolutely could have brought this car to price parity if they'd looked at a longer term timeline with it.
@Bazzookie
@Bazzookie 3 жыл бұрын
@@turbopickle9720 this is true but most of the cost comes from the development, not the production which actually makes the car more expensive to make than to sell. Cars are expensive because of how much they cost to develop. To really make a profit you have to recoup the cost of developing the car in the first place, the production is quite inexpensive relative to the R&D that goes into it. It's why mass production, affordable cars, share platforms and platforms are generally speaking updated rather than fully redeveloped when a new generation is released. The price is based not just on the cost of production but also the expected sales of the car, as well as the amount produced relative to the goal that is making a profit over the development costs. It's why less manufacturers are developing manual sports cars, because they don't feel the millions, sometimes billions, of dollars spent developing the car is going to make a real profit. It's why the Mk5 supra was a joint project between BMW and Toyota, same with the BRZ/86 between Toyota and Subaru. Honestly Lexus probably could've lowered the cost by increasing production and making them for longer, but it's possible they weren't equipped to produce the car at a larger scale and that still doesn't mean people would have bought it. Your brands image plays a large role, and Lexus isn't particularly known as an expensive Supercar brand. Most people walking into a Lexus dealer aren't looking to spend hundreds of thousands of dollars.

A masterpiece of engineering indeed. However, it lacked pedigree, history and the design was/is too cautious. I’m not surprised there were unsold examples. It will take time and docs like this for people to truly understand what it is all about. And even after all that happens, the vehicle will never have a Ferrari or Lamborghini aura. In stead, it will remain an honorable mention.

The common opinion of this car is genuinely the EXACT opposite of yours. Ferraris and lambos of the era will NEVER have the aura, specialness, and passion of the lfa. If youve been anywhere near literally any video where the lfa appears beside some average supercar, all everyone talks about is the lfa. People completely ignore everything else. Some make jokes about people who bought a ferrari instead of this car back in 2011. You have the opinion of car journalists from that era...

I have a 2020 edition MT-03 that I daily on dry days & its new so I have to keep the RPM's bellow 7K for the first thousand miles. Even with a in-ear sound suppression plugs + a full face helmet, the engine sound from 4K to 7K sounds so good it made my tear up the first time I got on the freeway // having played a lot of driving sim games over the years, it sounds like a WRX or Lotus Elise // just pulls steady with globs of smooth torque & what feels like more than enough power for a 380lb wet bike + 165lb rider // its much more comfortable than my previous 2 supersport 600cc bikes, Honda F4 & Suzuki GSX-R600 // & I trade in my race tuned Honda Grom for it // & glad for that too // Yamaha & Toyota partner up to make amazing engines & their upcoming electric motors for Hybrid, PHEV & EV are similarly excellent with cool sound //

Such a work of art, and an amazing machine on top of that. I've never understood the draw of super cars. McClaren, Ferrari, Lambo, Bugatti, etc... they're all gawdy looking, like Hot Wheels, and they dont inspire any kind of emotional response. As a 17 yro it makes me very sad to know that the likely hood of a car like the LFA ever being produced again is next to impossible. The LFA is a car that is a true once in a lifetime engineering masterpiece and it’ll always be remembered even when the days of petrol and diesel vehicles are zoned out. I’ve never seen a LFA before mainly because I’m from Ireland and the supercar scene here is minimal. But one day I’d love to drive or own an LFA. The thought of dying without being able to experience such a piece of engineering isn’t something I want to go through and it’s one of my many life goals to experience an LFA that I hope to complete it in the future. I really enjoyed the video, keep it up!

I saw one on the freeway once. I was on my GSX-R1000 coming up behind it and wondering what lovely car that was with it's massive vents and triplex exhaust. Then they hit the brakes and surprised me with how quickly it could scrub speed for a sudden exit maneuver. I've never seen one since, until now. So here is this wonderful love song to the LFA. I tried fast-forwarding through the video at first. Forty-eight minutes is a lot of time. But every jump I discovered I missed something and had to roll back. Eventually, I just settled in for the duration, even pausing to read the detailed documentation graphics that didn't always match the commentary. This is dense. So much detail on how the LFA came to be. So much I never knew. I remember hearing that Yamaha piped audio into the cabin to make the LFA exhaust note more magnificent. I assumed that meant stereo amplification assistance like too many cars do these days. Was I ever wrong. What they've done with this car is magical. Now I need to find one to drive. Thank you so much for this documentary. I really enjoyed watching.

whilst it is undoubtedly an engineering master piece and right at the top of my list, I dont consider it an all time great because it didn't offer anything new or even remotely ground breaking, which from Japanese company with an unlimited price and budget was a big disappointment for me. They talked it up as being an incredibly lightweight, with an engine revving too fast for analogue equipment which was horseshit. I never compare cars on numbers but Toyota fell short of their claims. Porsche had a V10 4 year previous with more power and torque and same displacement. it had an automate manual, when double clutch was common place, it produced the same power as n/a rivals at half the price and it wasn't any lighter.

@@Dowlphin Toyota only put LSDs in the 1993-1995 MR2 Turbos. E153 transmission. Monkeywrench sells them for $3500. At that point it may be cheaper and easier to just put an aftermarket LSD in an existing 1MZ-FE Camry E153. A Quaife or Kaaz is a little over a grand.

Wow. I don't think I've ever seen an underbody as beautiful as this. The whole suspension setup is borderline insane for a road car. I always thought the LFA was all about the engine, so this was unexpected, to say the least. Really impressive stuff. The LFA still is the best sounding road car ever created. This is a car that will forever be remembered and revered by enthusiasts. Tanahashi did such an outstanding job.

It warms my heart to see a full-length documentary on the Lexus LFA - my favourite car of all time. No production car sounds better than the V10 that this car was blessed with. Even Jeremy Clarkson agrees with me ;)

Wow!An incredible piece of work.One of the most compelling odes to a company stretching what is possible to articulate in pure engineering terms a driving aesthetic and express that and make it real.Beautiful,outstanding,and extremely well made film.

Jesus Christ, Mark. This is the most dense, intricate video you've ever made. From the info, the drone shots, the review. Just, what a good job, man.

Just a note to say thanks for making this video. The LFA and Lexus' efforts deserve it. Your productions are first class. So much more than talk into a camera and drive. While I'm a longtime Lexus owner, and currently drive a GS, I'll never be able to own an LFA. Maybe an LC someday. But in the meantime, your work gives me the best idea what the this masterpiece of a car is like. Thanks, again! And keep up the good work!!
