What do you prefer, fixing up older vehicles and keeping them on the road or buying something brand new and why?
@iancrosson9513
@iancrosson9513 5 жыл бұрын
Fixing up "older", or anything not new. Why because it's only way I can justify having owned 30+ cars in my lifetime; if I kept buying new I would be in crazy debt. Job gave me a new company car couple years back that I still have and I still don't understand wanting a brand new car. Jeez and maybe too because no mechanics are allowed to touch my cars. I think that's typical of any current or past professional mechanics.

I've literally never bought anything brand new and I don't think I ever will.

Haven't bought a car brand new and previous to this year only bought cars from the 90's. Being only $5k into 3 different vehicles over 3 years is a better trade than one $40k car's unknown problems. Also I don't take them to mechanics either. I can do pretty much everything in my own garage. Much preferred used and self kept.

Great video, I did one a few years back, getting ready to do it again. I ended up getting that crank bolt loose by running the breaker bar through the upper control arm and quickly turning the engine over. It worked but was a bit dodgy, just in case someone doesnt have the tools to get it loose

Good job! Having done a couple 430's I would say I rate the overall job more hours on Lexus, but easier. Miata I was not very pleased with the putting on the belt and timing alignment. For future if you purchase a chain wrench it will work on any pulley removal you run into so you don't have a collection of one off expensive specialty tools.

Thanks Ian! Yeah, the Miata belts you have to really get down on eye level to align the marks correctly. It's easy to be off a tooth and not realize it looking at it from a downward angle.

Great video! I am looking at getting a gx470 so this is great insight and very similar to the 2jz timing belt water pump change. The job can look intimidating but the knowledge and confidence gained by doing it yourself is priceless and can be passed along to other similar cars and trucks. Just curious but does this engine have cam and a front crank seal that can be changed during this process? I know on my 2jz I did these seals when I was in there, thanks.

Nice video, the Lexus Dealership here in Reno Nevada just quoted me $1,440 for the work and replacements you just did. Not sure their bid included the new pulley, tensioner, and radiator hoses either? Do you think they are over charging me? Mostly Labor for sure and their shop time is $195 per hr, seems rediculous price gouging to me but then again you did a lot of work there too? Thoughts? Mine is a 2003 LX470...

The 1st mistake I see so far is crank on TDC. But I did theses for 23 years. It's a interfering engine. The correct way is when you get the crank TDC and cams lined up. Move crank notch to the pointer. This is 45 degrees off of TDC. Note where your cam notches are lined up. If using Toyota parts, belt is marked, just remember, passenger side is R, driver is L. I removed radiator. Putting a little pressure on them can cost you. I replaced all timing components with new. You can all ways find the your manual for a small fee using Toyota, Lexus public website. Same as we used. All manufacturers have this information. TIS.

Great video! Nice car. A question that it's puzzling me: well, the car has 87K and the T-belt is serviced every 90K or every 5 years. The car was always serviced by Lexus. Then I guess they should've replaced the T-belt several times on this 20 year old vehicle. However, there are no stickers (?) in the engine bay with the date and mileage of the last T-belt replaced. Maybe I am wrong but otherwise we can assume that the belt inside is the original that came from the factory ... WOW ... If that's the case it's just amazing it's in such a good shape after 20 years!!
@TheSlipAngle

That is not a sign of bad compression, engine spins the waterpump when it runs. Compression is fine. It's been 20k miles since this video and engine has been running without a hiccup.
