Here's a thought to ponder if the AVR will allow it. Connect a larger sub to the LFE output and add smaller subs into the R&L speaker cables. Set the L&R to Large and adjust the HPF on the sub to match/blend the speakers. I believe and may be wrong, but that would separate the LFE to it's own dedicated output/sub woofer. Might be an interesting experiment for someone who has the gear to do it.

Ed is absolutely correct about the LFE being routed to the left and right channels when set to no sub. I just tested it on my Denon X4700H. What I said was also true for headphones that on mix down from multi-channel to stereo, the LFE channel is simply discarded. It might be different on different headphones as the AirPods Max connected to my phone does process the LFE probably because it's able to properly decode that .1 channel.

If the LFE is an independent channel, how is bass routed from the mains when you set the crossover to that channel, is the avr designed to do that or we just assume it routes the lower frequenct to the LFE channel?

Let's not get LFE channel and the Subwoofer mixed up. The channel is the signal sent to a speaker. In this case, the channel is LFE and the speaker is the subwoofer. When using bass management, meaning you're using a crossover for your mains, the frequencies below the crossover point get sent to the subwoofer. The subwoofer is also sent the LFE content. Hope that helps.

So for receivers like Pioneer that doesn't have a LPF/LFE option is it automatically set to 120hz or is it part of the crossover option?

Joe, do you know how bass is handled, if like me, you have LCR set to large AND yes to having a subwoofer. My surrounds + Atmos speakers are set to small, So who does the bass management for them? LCR or subwoofer?. Just for additional info my Mains + Center are connected to two front located subwoofers using high level connections and they are phase corrected. My two LFE subs are in the rear Since they are very close to MLP I dont want them to play anything from the front speakers, because localization issues. I have never had better bass than I do now.

If I set the lpf to 120hz for lfe, where should I set the crossover for speakers? If set to let's say 80hz, there is 40hz crossover, Is double bass is a big problem ? Should I set it higher?

LPF LFE should be set 80hz because in dubbing stage there are not using Full Range Subwoofer’s there are using Passive Subwoofer

The terms being odd for a non-enthusiast in the hobby doesn’t help. Low/high pass filter for anybody else would mean what it says face value: it’s a filter for low/high frequencies. It’s typical to think that whatever the filter names is what it filters. Like dust filter. I expect it to filter dust and let air through.
