You are absolutely right that it is extremely disappointing that players as highly paid as them underperformed. The Leafs will forever make more money than the salary cap allows for, same as the Rangers. The tax rate however will probably always be a blight on the competitiveness of this league that we all love so much. It is one of those intangible differentials that will/can never be fixed.

Well have to hand it to Rielly. After the regular season he had where he was mostly average to mediocre I didn't expect him to turn it up like this in the playoffs. If he could play like this for the rest of his career it would make him one of the best Leafs defensemen in the team's history. He was a monster and played so well the whole playoffs. He just needs to keep doing that going forward and he'll be remembered as one of the Leafs best all-time players.

Don't comment often, but Steve, you put out great work and I wanted to offer some words to you. As a life-long Panthers fans born and raised in South Florida, any true-blue fan down here looking at things objectively can really empathize with rational Leafs fans such as yourself. Before last season's series win vs. the Caps (and subsequent sweep loss to Tampa), we hadn't won a series in 26 years (I was a literal baby in '96, so it might as well not have happened for me). We watched our state rival Lightning hoist 3 cups during that streak after our lone finals appearance ended in a sweep to a legendary Avs team. We saw other southeast rivals like the Canes win a cup and continually son us on a national stage at every opportunity. And even former players left us for greener pastures and not only had playoff success, but snagged a few rings here and there (Nathan Horton, Jay Bouwmeester, Gregory Campbell, Michael Frolik, etc.). I say all this to preface the fact that we made many of the same mistakes the Leafs are currently making (hyper-focus on offense, holding onto a "sacred core," allowing less shots but higher quality chances due to defensive positioning and transition game, etc.) and learned from them through a turbulent regular season that felt like a dress-rehearsal for this current run that we're on. I genuinely hope for the sake of loyal, level-headed Leafs fans such as yourself and others that you get to experience the joy that this Panthers team has brought myself, my family, and this community during this run. Good luck Steve, hang in there buddy.

I was a teen and saw the Doug Gilmour era when they almost went to the Stanley Cup final in 1993. The team now is much more talent filled but the team in 1993 had players with heart and who were clutch at times. They really did get unlucky that year, they likely would have won the cup had they won that game 7.

I agree. The big guys in '93 really stepped it up, played over their heads and provided much more leadership and offense than the top line of today ever did. They had by far a better goaltender in Felix Potvin, who is Steve Dangle's favourite Leaf, and for good reason. They also had one the top checking lines in the league in Bill Berg, Peter Zezel and Mark Osbourne. Wendel Clark and in particular Doug Gilmour, were able to completely take over playoff games, something sorely lacking now ( too little, too late Tavares )!! Last but not least, Pat Burns was leagues ahead of Sheldon Keefe as a coach. I could go on and on. I was proud of those guys in '93. Not proud of these guys at all...they waited far too long to put it all together, and it's inexcusable!!

First, let me a compliment you on an amazing season of LFR’s, and the podcasts have been great too. I look forward to every LFR, either at the end of the night, or at the beginning of the day after a game. Your knowledge, your assessment of the play, your hilarious expressions, passionate rants and your keen home-boy enthusiasm are so great! This loss tonight, was so extremely frustrating because we came so close to pulling it off. But as you say, we ran out of miracles. And despite the hokey mythology of the United States Olympic hockey team’s “Miracle On Ice”, miracles don’t really win anything. Especially not in the Stanley Cup playoffs. Gutsy hard work, making every shift desperate and tough, leaving nothing in the tank at the end of every game, and elevating your play beyond wherever you think it can go is what wins in the Stanley Cup playoffs. And while there were individuals on the team who did that, and some nights, the entire team did that, the key people who needed to do that every game didn’t. And that’s why our beloved Leafs aren’t playing hockey today. As for your comments about blowing it all up, getting rid of everybody, I’m not sure I agree with you. How long was Ovechkin without a Stanley Cup? How long did Tampa go with their same core before they were successful? I just think it’s amplified in Toronto, because it’s Toronto and our media go crazy. Last night, Paul Maurice, when asked about the pressure to win in the playoffs in Toronto being more so than anywhere else, said “in Toronto that pressure starts at the beginning of Training Camp.” He’s right. No other team in the NHL faces this level of criticism, attention, speculation, expectation, scrutiny and vitriol. And perhaps that takes its toll. Especially on the core. I think the new additions to our team this year at the trade deadline were pretty incredible. It takes time for those adjustments of personnel to settle in and with all the tinkering that was done in the player blender by Sheldon Keefe, perhaps the real chemistry that is possible didn’t have time to establish itself. And Morgan Riley said after the game that he really loves these guys and he wants to stay together. He doesn’t want it to change. It was an honest statement, and I think of all the people on the team, Morgan’s sense of what works and doesn’t must be the strongest. So there’s some food for thought. I hope you have a lovely summer with your family and your dog and life keeps you safe, sound and happy. Thanks again, all the best .🌹
