This short screencast covers the steps necessary to relate tables together in proper one-to-many relationships in an Access relational database. It discusses how to determine proper relationships in the first place, how to create primary key fields, the use of the AutoNumber data type, the role of the primary key field in a table, and how to create foreign key fields. Both existing relationships as well as new one-to-many relationships are examined and created.

nice,great n simple explanation Lisa. foregin key also you mention, and ofcourse thats same important. when most explantion is just say Primary Key only.

I use Camtasia to capture the screen and narration. Camtasia allows you to edit the video and add callouts such as text, arrows, and the red boxes.

Hello Lisa ! This is a great course, very clear and well explain, thank you for doing this. I have a database related question regarding the foreign key on the contacts table, if the contacts tables is already populated with data how do I populate the CompanyID column that was just created in order to have accurate information? Does this needs to be manually done or outside Access and then upload or it can be populated with the related Companies table? Thank you in advance for you time, much appreciated.

You'd have to manually enter the CompanyID for each contact record. Sometimes though, you can sort or filter the data to put the contacts together that belong to the same company so that you can update the foreign key CompanyID field faster. For example, if the contacts for a particular company all had the same email suffix you might be able to isolate the contacts for each company in a query and then use an update query to update the CompanyID field value.
