I find that my single hose unit in my bedroom tends to pull air up via the HVAC ducts from the relatively cool basement if I just place a towel at the bottom of the bedroom door as my house otherwise pretty tight. Combining that with insulating the exhaust hose seems to make it work very well. I have a 14K/8.5K Honeywell HL14CESWB and it keeps my second floor bedroom/bath and walk in closet with a combined area of about 600sf nice and cool on the hottest days.

I used to be a product manager for Lennox IAQ line. You did an excellent job with this. I would add one thing only to your review and that is a brief mention of the unit’s surge capacity. Perhaps measure surge in worst case scenario that is with thermostat set to lowest so compressor has to immediately kick on. Then measure starting surge with thermostat at a higher than ambient/room temp. Lastly given the electronics interface how does it handle running on generator power (non inverter generator) where THD might be a bit higher than grid power. Would it be possible to power it successfully through a Tripp Lite box (generator 110 V power out to Tripp lite box, then AC plugs into Tripp Lite box). Would be a great test. Obviously it would be best to plug it into wall outlet which would be on home’s transfer switch with surge protected feed, but that isn’t always possible. There is a reasonable market of users (myself included) that need to know surge capacity in order to run the unit off of a home or perhaps RV generator. Thanks again for this.

Could the high efficiency rating of the LG be attributed to a lower/variable condenser fan speed? This would thereby reduce the loss of efficiency encountered due to a negative pressure environment. I have a suspicion that the fan may be variable due to the fact the compressor runs off a variable inverter already - perhaps the condenser fan could ramp up according to utilisation of the compressor?

We didn’t see him test LG’s sleep mode or show an ambient db test before testing the nose level. I just watched another text where the guy said the unit didn’t hit he claimed db rating and yet when the unit was off before starting the test his ambient db was 49-50db. Well of course the unit didn’t hit 44db in that environment. People are well meaning but kind of dumb when it comes to setting up proper tests, so this guy here tells you it’s just loud…they are all Loud and it doesn’t matter what you buy you will get loud noises….yet he never mentioned sleep mode where the fan and the compressor ramp down….which undercuts his entire argument about how “they just make fan noise as air moves through the unit and it will be in the low 50db range”. REALLY? That’s all it can do? Honestly, you can’t make this up…yes AC isn’t quiet quiet time, but sleep mode is. Superb mods that lets you keep the AC more consistent running without the constant kick on and off of their units, so a gentle consistent cooling that stays on longer after you achieved your desired room temp is basically the perfect mode.

I guess the strategy here is to avoid drawing hot air from the outside by pressure deficit created by the air conditioning unit and compensate by drawing air from another air source like maybe the basement where the air may be cooler. The other thing is maybe to avoid the heat from the hose and possible hot air from the outside is just to have the unit attached outside somehow where the cool air can just be piped into a room. This would avoid the heat issue and the complaints from other people in the house when you draw heat into the house. All this just avoid central AC or a Dual split for one room.

Does this particular model shut off the fan as well once desired temperature is reached? I'm noticing with energy efficient portable units that after the compressor kicks off the fan also will kick off. I am wanting a high btu unit that continues to circulate air after the compressor has kicked off. I'm not sure why they are converting units to do this but it's just another inefficiency in my opinion.

I have this unit and it has worked well, but the duct hose degrades and cracks, especially when you pack the hose away then pull it out every season. The hose eventually can't take the opening and closing, and it tears open. Since it is fixed in the bottom, you are stuck having to buy a replacement hose and configure the connection (i.e. tape)

When comparing similar spec to this portable unit vs a traditional window unit. Which one on is more efficient, least cost to operate, cools a room lower and faster. In other words, is a window unit better than a portable unit? I live in a small condo in SWFL and have restrictions, but I could get away with using a window unit mounted in my lanai sliding doors. I am figuring to one of them to assist my central air to cool just my master bedroom. My central air conditioner has a hard time keeping up during the looooooooog hot and humid summers! lol

Hi, your review has greatly helped me purchase a dehumidifier and air purifier so thank you for that. It seems the LP1419IVSM is sold out everywhere and it's impossible to ship for some reason (Along with the other 2 in your top 3 unfortunately and the other LG units like the LP1017WSR and LP1018WSR). I saw someone mention the LG LP1420BSR. Would the decrease in price ($100 difference from Home Depot) justify the lower SACC? Or is there something else?
@consumer-analysis
@consumer-analysis 4 жыл бұрын
If I'm understanding your question correctly, the LG LP1420BSR looks like a fine portable air conditioner other than that it has a fairly low SACC for a 14,000 BTU unit. In other words, there's nothing wrong with it other than its low SACC. That being said, I would recommend the Whynter ARC-14S over the LP1420BSR in this price range if neither of my top two picks are in stock and you need a portable AC unit for a large and/or difficult to cool room.

@@dhanasekaranpalani7207 I recommend the NewAir NAC14KWH02 as the best alternative to the LP1419IVSM. If the NewAir is also not available I would recommend the Whynter ARC-14S. With a SACC of only 8,500 BTUs I would not recommend the LP1420BHR over these other options.

I've recently purchased this model and found that unless I set the temperature to be extremely cold, the unit barely runs the compressor before reaching the target temperature, and therefore significantly increases humidity in the room it's being used in while in cool mode. While the rest of my home is between 40-50% relative humidity, the office I've placed this unit in now exceeds 60% regularly. Is this a normal thing? I can run it in dry mode but then I have to drain it which is a pain because there's no gravity drain option. I wonder if I bought a model that's *too* efficient for supplementing weak HVAC/added heat from workstation PCs in my office...

It's marketed as "Ultra Quiet", and that's one of the reasons I opted for this over substantially less expensive units. As you point out, though, it's anything but quiet. And the dual-inverter seems to make a unique, multi-stage startup sound that I find particularly objectionable. At this point, I'm considering switching to a window unit -- which I'd hoped to avoid -- simply to get more of the noise-producing mechanism out of the room. On a positive note, it seems to be handling this areas high humidity, as I've yet to be prompted to drain the thing (an annoyance I've seen mentioned in user reviews for portable units from other brands.)

I had another non inverter lg portable, and compared to that one, this one is less noisy, in my case i set it in low speed, and gets the job done, and it is super energy efficient, when you power it on it does draw around 1,100 watts, but when it hits the target temperature, it keeps fluctuating between 50 watts and 400/500 watts, which is so much better than the one i previously had, i really like that you can control it with an app, even tough it is not the fastest app, and also you can keep track of the energy consumption within the app, it even tells you when to clean your filter, so all in all, it is the best portable ac right now, obviously there are better options like a window ac unit, or a mini split, but if you can't have any of those where you live, this is the best option by far

Thank you for the kind words! To answer your first question, no, I was never a teacher. To answer your second question, condensate does collect in the unit and so there is a single drain plug on the back and bottom of the unit to drain it.

@@michaelklonsky3100 All portable AC units on the market have some sort of a drain plug. Frequent manual drainage is only required in extreme conditions (e.g. severe humidity). Most moisture is released through the unit's exhaust hose. It is not collected for drainage.

Hi I bought this exact model LG portable inverter based on this review and it is terrible. Yes, it will cool your room(mine 300 square feet) to a cool temp but after you reach the desired temp the unit will keep blowing air (as expected with an inverter) however that is when the issue occurs. This causes the humidity levels to rise in my house by 20%!!! Prior to turning it on my house had humidity levels in the low forties after I run the LG I am in the mid-sixties! I can smell the humidity. I also have the drain open in the LG to drain the water. I'm sure this due to negative pressure caused by one hose. One of the worse buys of my lifetime. I am going to buy a 2 hose and see if that resolves the negative pressure and humidity issue.

I have the LG PA11WS (220V) version from Germany (2023) and the dual inverter compressor is the quietest one I have ever heard. I disagree with your assessment that it is noisy..Every portable AC should use that type. I wish they offered this as a dual hose like a Midea. Single hoses suck. Literally. But sometimes you gotta take what the market offers and this LG is a damn good compromise. You can actually use this in a bedroom and sleep with it. Unlike the cheap pieces of crap offered in hardware stores that rattle with noise compressors and cheap plastic.

Variable cooling capacity. Not detailed enough. Of course variable consumption. Not detailed enough. My power circuit is not compensated, the voltage can drop even at 110v, so that will tend to increase the current, triggering the protection. Very very interesting would be IF I can choose to lower cooling capacity to lower the consumption in order to do a compromise between cooling and consumption. Otherwise it doesn't worth the money. Its competitor, Frigidaire, has model with a little less BTU but $230 !!! cheaper. And it's an ordinary unit, no inverter. What to choose between the 2 ? Risk only $439 for frigidaire, which may trigger the current proetction, or risk $659 (cheapest I could find), which M A Y (again M A Y) vary its consumption ?!??! Or get a unit with only 10000(6000) only BTU. Which is rated to only 11 amps. Or 10, something like that.

This was a “decent” review, but one BIG omission (or lacking) is coverage of the condensation [water 💦] that this units handles. Does it mostly expel most (or all) of the condensation water?, or does it deliver a lot to the bottom of the unit (where the exit/water plug is?). This factor is IMPORTANT as we (customers/users) want to know if we’ll be having to be EMPTYING (constantly) the water accumulated at the bottom water reservoir?, or will it [the unit] mainly evaporate the water vapor “out” (of/using the air exit hose system). The video didn’t cover this feature (AT ALL!😡👎) - so a B minus on the “grade” of this video. This matter is a BIG deal! (Depending upon which part of the country you’re in), because if you are in a “High” humidity area then your A/C unit WILL put out a TON of water💧(maybe too much 🌊 for a standard [hose] evaporation system can handle). And this is precisely what happened in my situation - where I have a Whynter A/C system. Granted, it is not as “efficient” as the LG, but it has two (2) Exit [water] plugs (one at the bottom and one at the top). The plugs at the bottom of these units are VERY inefficient and impractical, as they will always “Leak” if you have to empty them (and this is REALLY a Pain, if you have to do this, Often😡👎). But if the water plug is at the Top then you can [more] easily attach a water hose to route this water outside (and thus, NOT “continually” empty the water created [again, in the common A/C condensation process]). I hope this one fact [factor] will help others out there 😄👍
