An overview of the game Oh Mummy by Gem Software in 1984, played on a Sinclair ZX Spectrum computer.
Special thanks to Mark for the game donation!
Lazy Game Reviews Quickie #2
These LGRQ videos are a break from my "full length" reviews to simply show more arcade-like games and give my opinion on the game and how it plays. The goal is to do this in around 3 minutes for each game, unscripted and unrehearsed.

Oh Mummy was given free with the later 128k Amstrad built Spectrum +2s from 1987 in a 6 game pack, along with Crazy Golf, Treasure Island, Punchy (clone of Hunchback), Disco Dan and Alien Destroyer,

The original developer seems to have sold or licenced their software to Amsoft, Amstrads publishing arm they set up to support the CPC, which is why the game pretty much became a pack-in title for both machines.

I got my Speccy in late 1987 and I got a whole lot of different games like Colin the cleaner, odd job Eddie, Ian Botham's test match etc...

A lot had 10 game packs with tge games you mentioned plus Odd Jib Eddie and Ian Botham's Test Match. I can't recall the other two games- one was being in control of a bouncing ball of some sort.

love seeing Americans discovering the computer games of my youth. The Amstrad CPC version of this was a lot better though - nice animation and graphics, smoother controls and in game music.

My dad was stationed in England in the 80's. We had a Sinclair. I have fond memories of my dad loading games via cassette. Good times. I think I'll get a ZX Spectrum, cuz I miss those days in England with my dad. So many games for these systems. Many were created by teens back in the day. Cool memories for me.

@vwestlife I do, a Sony Trinitron. It works with the V-hold adjusted and in monochrome, as you said. I use a PAL->NTSC adapter to then get color. I go into a whole lot of detail into exactly what all I use for my PAL systems in my ZX Spectrum computer review.

Another entertaining and informative video - well done. Nice that a reviewer doesn't slag-off such old games with 'functional' graphics and sound, for no good reason. What are your favourite Spectrum games, from what you've played?

@UKRetroGames @UKRetroGames Haha, it has been a while back! It was packed in with the 48k, along with at least one other. And yes I know, I know, I'm doing it wrong... haha, PC user habits die hard. I like QAOPM for platform and action games, but for anything remotely mazelike I find it very hard to act quickly with the keys all spread out. Now the ELK won't even let me config similar "PC arrow key" inputs, I suppose due to keyboard mapping/overlap, but the Speccy is okay with my mutation!

Hehe, this looks like it coud be kind of fun, I wonder if there is a C64 version, I wish I could remember where that tune was from, I keep hearing it in everything, I seem to remember that kids used to sing rather silly lyrics to it. Great review as always dude.

Man, I remember playing the hell out of this as a kid. If it's any consolation, I don't remember any control issues, though I may just be forgetful, it has been a fair few years.

Do you have a PAL-compatible monitor for these Euro systems? Most NTSC monitors will display a PAL signal if you have a manual V-Hold control to readjust it to the 50 Hz refresh rate, but then you only see the image in black & white.

The gameplay reminds me a bit of Qix. Qix has you drawing squares without having your player object touch the nasties or the nasties cutting through the line mid-drawing.

It's probably been mentioned already, but this game was released on the Amstrad CPC 464, and was one of ten (?) titles that came with the machine - I suspect the CPC version controls a little better than the Spec. I'm not sure if Amstrad had bought Sinclair by the time Oh Mummy was converted to Spectrum.

how did cassette games work ??? seems so strange and cool
@onlineamiga

They basically just contained a lot of screeching sounding audio. The computer picked up the noise and understood it into program code for the game or program to load. Do a youtube search for ZX Spectrum loading and you'll see them in action. They were incredibly slow and quite unreliable. Most games took about 5 minutes to load up.

Have you ever tried opening an image file in a word document? It's kinda like that where the game data is converted into sound and then back into data. And yes it's as unreliable as it sounds.
@TheTurnipKing
@TheTurnipKing 5 жыл бұрын
Isn't that because it inherited certain faults from the VIC's tape loading, where it wasn't such an issue because by default that machine would only ever be loading about 4k of data?

Im looking for similiar looking game guys, maybe you could help me, it is probably ms-dos game. I played the game back in the 2003 on my PC. It was 2D game. Where you played as a mummy, and you were trying to find golden keys. I remember there were rooms in the level, and you never see to the room until you came inside. There could be enemies, pickups or the key. (I dont remember if it was randomized, but I think so) I am looking very, very, very long time. If anyone gives the right name I will be generous to him. $

+silverGEE I'm actually kind of surprised by that since the game came out in 1984 via mail order around the same time as the Amstrad 464, before going on to be bundled with the Sinclair 128k in 1986 along with some of GEM's other games. Given the similarities between the Amstrad and the Speccy you'd think they'd be a lot closer. Certainly the Speccy has done better, but I don't think Amstrad were aiming to bundle high quality releases, if you know what I mean.
