Given how Animation/Graphical/Physics technology has progressed in the last 15 years, its a shame no one has had a decent stab at making a spiritual successor

In this game it would. As when going from janitor into an actor, their actor experience is immediately zero for all the movie genres. You have to make him practice first before the outcome of his acting is fine. At least four times per each genre.

I really appreciate your brief mention of the state of the gaming industry and online portions of games ending. This is something a lot of gamers today don't consider well enough, in my opinion. In fact, the temporary nature of online service and digital copies of games with no boxed release is a subject in itself, and as you are a collector of hard boxed copies of games, I would love to hear your thoughts on it all sometime. I've always loved opening a brand new game, going through a (sometimes beautiful) manual, etc. And, of course, the wonderful smell of it. :p It's been so sad to see this disappear for so very many games. As always, thanks for the great videos!

It would be nice for more games to care about physical releases, but it is worth noting that going more digital saves on material and money. The idea of games that are purely online should die, and I reckon games should release limited physical copies of a quality akin to that of the 80s and 90s, but overall I personally think that focusing on digital is good for the minimal footprint.

Well you can't expect the online support to last FOREVER, I mean server maintenance and upkeep does cost. And for what it was worth, The Movies had a very, very long online support.
@BadWebDiver

Most games bought on Steam can be played offline, since the game is downloaded to your computer. I've done this numerous times. The only worst case sceneario is if your computer got wiped and the online content disappeared. Which can happen, but is rare.
@DrBigt
@DrBigt 6 жыл бұрын
You can play The Movies offline too, just the online extras and addons are no longer avaivable. You can still share your movie too, by just exporting it to your computer and uploading the result on KZfaq. It's a shame as LGRG pointed out, the online stuff were legit cool and fun but the game had a really long online support.

This always seemed like a Maxis-type Sims-ish game to me. Despite not being that, of course. And just like no matter how hard I tried, my creature kept eating villagers. Here, no matter how hard I tried, my actors got addicted to food and alcohol before too long. Sort of imagined my movie studio doubled as a clinic on the side. :P
@AguyinaRPG
@AguyinaRPG 9 жыл бұрын
Oh yes, this is what I'm talking about. I was heavily obsessed with The Movies back in the day. I made quite a few contributions to the online service and even uploaded a couple of them on KZfaq (though I've set them on private). This game really opened up a lot of new horizons for me, and I basically got it just on a whim from my parents after my love of The Sims 2 started to die down. Like LGR said, the actual depth of this game is very deceptive. It locks you in and gets you toying with stuff, but it becomes repetitive due to its management aspects. Were it a game just about making movies and trying to compete with a system than either made logical sense or made satirical sense, then it would have been far stronger. Imagine having to put in scenes of gratuitous violence or make a gritty reboot to appease the audiences so you could stay in business. That would have made it far more interesting. It tickles that creative bone though. It's got just enough charm and flair to make you want to see how things are filmed. For me though, the most important aspect was always the community, and I really miss the days of sharing my crappy little movies and seeing what others were able to do.

I actually remember hearing of this game in an old issue of Nintendo Power, because a console port of this was being made at one point for PS2, Gamecube, and Xbox, but said port was cancelled because of two reasons. First off was the acquisition of Lionhead by Microsoft, which meant they could no longer put out versions for all consoles. Second, apparently sales of the PC original just weren't that high to begin with, so they figured a console port wouldn't be that much more profitable. Shame it's not on GOG at least, I'd love to be able to just buy this and download right away.

My experience with _The Movies_ was rather the opposite. I was very excited by the prospect of being able to make movies using the in-game engine, but when I actually opened it up and tried it out, I found the selection of scenes, moods, and camera angles shockingly lacking. I found no option to change the blocking of certain scenes (like going through _this_ door over here) and found myself struggling to make anything that seemed even the slightest bit cohesive. The avant-garde route was definitely the way to use this, but I just wanted to make something fairly traditional and tell a story. The gameplay itself was understandable but simultaneously managed to be both frantic and boring. I was totally unable to keep up with all the things that I needed to do to keep my studio in the black and in very short order stopped caring altogether because getting there was utterly dull. The sandbox mode was okay, in that it took the undue stress and tedium away, but the aforementioned issues with the movie-making tools and the limits on the options you had were astounding and discouraging. Maybe it's the letdown from the commercial hype talking, but I simply can't recommend this game in the slightest. Way too restricted for what it was touted to be.

The game was garbage and I am surprised LGR was so kind to it. That or it's garbage qualities have been patched since it released. Time passed way too fast, the logic behind what made movies successful or not was random as hell, and the management aspects were incredibly nagging.

To be fair, this was a game meant to make creating animated movies be _easy_ , not feature rich. If you want more features, you _could_ use an actual animation program like SFM or MMD, but then you'd so many features that you'll have no idea how to do anything. It's the same thing as using Microsoft Movie Maker vs Adobe Premiere to edit video, Mario Paint vs an SNES dev kit to make 16-bit music, or Super Mario Maker vs Unity to make 2D platforming games.

I've spent so many days and hours playing this game back when it came out, I think I have some of my saved movies on my old hard drive... got to dust off that thing sometime. I also remember before you start the game and the lionhead logo shows up, if you click and move the mouse you can play around with the logo and the little squares. Physics in that are just clunky but fun, novelty of doing that usually wore out quickly but I kept doing that every time I started the game even just for a second. Great review btw!

Gosh I used to not only make movies in this all the time, but I'd invite my friends to come over and we would provide voice acting for all the scenes too. Looking back at it now it's pretty bad, but I won't ever forget the straight up fun we had setting up scenes and dressing up the actors. I wholeheartedly recommend checking it out too. Heck, the modding community is still providing fresh new content to this day!

Fun fact: The music for this game has been used in FX's TV show "Archer" during multiple scenes. One instance I remember is during that shrinking vessel inside the scientist's body episode. I had to rewind a few times and listen intently for it, but it's there. I believe the track is called: "All Out Action". Another one I remember from the soundtrack is "A Long Time Ago", a Godfather-esque track that was used for Archer's S03E08 for the one with the Italian President. Funny how that is the legacy of this game now.

Hey, I remember this one! I remember liking this game a lot when I was a teenager. I think the whole concept-from the ability to make your own content to hearing cranks of various eras of radios espouse odd views on topics that even manage to head into Red Scare territory-appealed to the historian and aspiring filmmaker in me. I remember playing it on Windows XP and 7 but was sadly was unable to get it up and running on Windows 10.

I can't help but think that if The Sims 3 would have been amazing if they had these features and gameplay when they rolled out with all that fame system and the backlot and whatnot.

It might have been some great features included with Showtime. The Sims 2 could have benefited as well, since as far as I know, there is no equivalent to Superstar (Sims 1) or Showtime (Sims 3), other than the acting career.

I was so excited to see you had a review of this game because it's a game I adore & still play to this day. It's such a great game & I don't know why more people don't talk about it. Probably because of the limited access. When I was younger, I used to tell my friends about it & they would come over & we'd make movies together. :) I remember purchasing this game out of the blue at Best Buy when I was a kid for $20 thinking it'll be an okay game, but wow I was impressed! I was so happy to find a copy of the expansion online, so I'm still exploring that! :) There aren't many games out there that you can appreciate as the years go by, I mean this game is so good that I am still playing it in my adulthood. It's a shame that the online community isn't in operation now, I never got to use it. I'm surprised there hasn't been many games that "shadow" this one now. If there were, I'd probably play them. I will probably continue to play The Movies game as the years go by like I have in years past. It's just that good. :)
