well I'm here seven years later

I had a PS3 for a year or so. Played through the exclusives I wanted: Heavy Rain, Flower, etc. But once I got through them and there weren't many more I was interested in on the horizon, I sold it because it was just sitting there gathering dust. I prefer to play games on PC, or the 360 if it's on both consoles because I like the controller better and I actually feel connected to my gamer profile on it. PS3 is great, I just prefer 360's features more (minus paying for online, which I don't do).

For those who hate that the glossy black attracts fingerprints, get the Halo Reach console. You get the 250 GB console you love, but with a nice silver finish.

And thanks, my main focus is still PC and DOS gaming but some newer stuff is okay here and there I think. Especially regarding Microsoft's newer stuff, which is arguably the great-great-great-grandson of all the old school IBM/MS loveliness.

@sesestro As I mentioned quickly, there is a 4GB "arcade" model coming out in September or something. Or so goes the rumours.

the proprietary wifi adapter for the 360 is probably the biggest ripoff in console history, next to the obsurd cost of the 360 hard drives, of course.

Nice. It gives it that classic retro look of video gaming from the 80's. Fits your channel pretty well.

@overpoweredanimation You can either buy a hard drive transfer cable to copy stuff directly from your hard drive, you can transfer items to any USB stick if you can get access to your drive from another 360, or you can just re-download the stuff you want from XBLA (downloading won't restore your savegames, though)

I have been debating getting the new Xbox S for a few weeks now since, for one it just came out and two, I really haven't been able to compare it's new features to those on my older 360. Based on your comparisons I can honestly say I'm more confident about my decision and will definitely be purchasing one. You did an excellent job comparing both of them. It seems like you really know your stuff, and that's hard to find in most of the stores I've been going to. Thanks again!

I still have my original launch 360 from 05 and it still works perfect. I just tear it down every 3 years or so and give it a good cleaning. I play it almost everyday.

@Bomb1525 Yeah. That's the point I was making, that you shouldn't HAVE to have old cables. I thought it should have come with component/HDMI cables for those that didn't already have them.

Very thorough and good over-view of both systems and review of the newer model. I never a 360 of any kind, so I found this pretty interesting. If I do ever pick one up, I'll definitely get the newer 'Elite' black model for the Wi-Fi, which should've been standard in the first place, IMO.

Can't say I've had a single one of those problems with mine. Downloads and plays music just fine, plays supported original Xbox games, and loads quicker than my older 360 did.

@Teknoviirus Yes, all old cables still work just fine as nothing has changed in that regard to my knowledge.

@nath453 Well as I mentioned at the end of the vid, I've noticed that it runs quicker if anything. Especially noticeable in the dashboard. Otherwise it seems the same, just quicker when accessing the hard drive.

@VetaEXZ Those have been discontinued some time ago now. There is no slot to even plug them in on the new Xbox 360.

Hands down the best review of this console I've seen, this is the definitive, you've touched on everything that makes the newer unit better, pointed out everything that made the older model inferior, and you knew your stuff, I already know everything about this model and totally prefer my Reach Slim model over my original Xbox 360 Elite in every way and was curious what someone else had to say about it. Thanks for letting everyone know what they need to know, and for new 360 owns, buy this one.

@Mikeyz94 In the sense that it only took a few minutes to make instead of hours, yes, it's really quick.

@Prygst I feel it's irrelevant as there is no real gain in having a slot loader. Either drive type has its issues. The PS3 and Wii with their slot loaders have more internal electro-mechanical parts that can go bad, in theory. Plus it takes a tiny bit longer to insert and eject a disc. And if a disc gets stuck, well likely say goodbye to your console, not just the drive. Of course you have the possible scratching issues for the 360 tray. It's personal preference and I don't care much either way.

@necrum777 Bigger fan, cooler chips, better ventilation... I don't see how heat issues could be worse on this one. Put it this way... I had two older 360's die on me. This one is still working like new with no hint of any issues.

@VetaEXZ No, the kit uses a USB cable, there's no kind of memory card at all.

@VetaEXZ Yup, all will transfer over just fine. Even if it doesn't, there's an option in the Guide to "Recover Xbox Live Account" and it will re-download everything for you: friends, gamerscore, gamerpics, etc

@VetaEXZ It's super easy. Either buy the transfer cable kit from Microsoft for 20 bucks and hook the two machines up to transfer everything, or get a USB stick with enough space and copy everything over to the stick, then plug it into your new one and copy it over.

@Disthron I think you've missed the point. It's not the fact that it doesn't have RCA, it does have many RCA inputs, it's the fact that RCA sucks in comparison to component or HDMI. It's like stepping back twenty years in display tech for a brand new system.

I play games on whatever they come on. Sure, I prefer PC, but I get all the consoles as well, because I'm a gamer. I like games. And a couple hundred bucks isn't much at all for potentially thousands of hours of fun.

I have the R2-D2 Slim, it makes R2-D2 noises when you push the power and eject buttons. Love it.

The new PSU design was implemented to make the 360-S "Kinect ready" - which means it can power Kinect through the USB ports. The old 360 is still compatible with Kinect, but you'll need to use an additional A/C adapter.

Heh, you playing with tray button on 360S reminded me how I accidentally pushed it while rearranging furniture to play with Kinect and had the tray trying to open into sofa that I was pushing at that moment. Hell of a way to find out that it works even if the console is turned off!

I don't have much of a problem with the wi-fi because my friend got one of those wi-fi adapters and he has an S model. So, he sold it to me for $2. He had no idea what it was worth. :D

@HornyChief It is still kind of loud, but I think it's a tad bit quieter. I haven't really noticed much because I don't play games with the disc, I install them to the hard drive now that I've got the space to do it, making gameplay silent.

Is the background noise from the camera?, does it have a tape mechanism?. If so i think it augments the retro style of your retro reviews.

Well at least the brick is not attached to the socket. Dose your TV not have RCA cables? I've had a wirless network for a while now, they are VERY handy when you have limited space for running wire.

I've had the Red Ring of Death like four times, and not once has it actually bricked my console - I just unplugged it immediately and started using it again. My old 360 Elite I got way back's disc drive stopped working after about 7 years so I bought a second hand Arcade, and that is still going strong.

Launch Window 360's had a glossy silver finish on the front similar to the Black gloss on the S. Still have that controller although that console died a looooong time age

@dizzyhizzylizzle Sadly no. The only way you're going to get your own content on there is to access your home network or use a USB flash device/hard drive. And to get music on your Xbox drive you'll have to physically rip each CD you want with the Xbox 360 itself. The only way to get video on it is to pay/download from XBL. Of course, this disregards things like flashing your firmware...

Ive had both over the years, I remember getting my OG 360 for christmas and I used it for a few years and I bought a s because I thought it red ringed (it turns out my cat just bit through the AV cable causing it to show the no AV cable error) so I bought an S for cheap at gamestop. Overall I ended up liking both outside of the OG not having built in wifi. To this day they both work fine outside of the original one's power brick sounding like a dying washing machine

Another difference between the older Xbox 360s and the Xbox 360 S is that the 360 S fixes the red ring of death issue which was caused by BGA (ball grid array) soldering on some of the major chips. The faulty BGA soldering weakened with heat over time and often caused the red ring of death. Another product that was affected by faulty BGA soldering were the later Apple Power Mac G5 computers that had also had issues related to the BGA soldering.

@dizzyhizzylizzle yes if you set up windows media center (PC) onto the xbox through the xbox settings, it downloads your music and videos. you must follow instructions on the PC as well as xbox. install the software and in no time your xbox will download your files (videos and music ONLY IN THE MEDIA CENTER SO ADD THEM TO THE LIBRARY IF YOU WANT THEM ON YOUR XBOX)

i got the new black one and it gets warm fast it never frezzees are anything but is it normal for the system to get warm in like 15 mins?

I have been having my 360 since day 1 I've only had the ring once fixed it and still play with it.

I'm interested in adding new 360 to my console collection. Finally it looks good enough to stand beside ps3 (matter of taste, I know..), but I've heard reports that despite being very quiet they run hot. Have you checked it after a bit of playing? I cannot put it in open space vertically, so it would be a dealbeaker..

Do you think that I should get a 360 controller for PC or do you have any recommendation?
