Just watched the video of you backpacking the length of Britain, and I did wonder throughout the video if you were ex army. Your determination and mental strength throughout that video was on point!! I envy you're will and drive, the entire walk was documented brilliantly, and it was great that you gave an honest and detailed description of the broad range of emotions you went through. I hope I can take inspiration from your accomplishment and achieve something great myself, thanks for sharing your journey

Ended up here after first watching your backpacking Britain video. Congratulations to you on your already eclectic experiences in life and at such a young age. From an army recruit to the freedom and self reflection of van life and solo backpacking, you really have given yourself an advantage through simply living on your own terms. These experiences and the realities you encountered will serve you well for the rest of your days. I am so exasperated and tired of the crap spouted from so many people my age who want to condemn entire younger generations for the behaviour of a few. You and many others (who don't get as much attention as the reprobates) prove them wrong. My utmost respect and best wishes to you Liam.

Hey pal I did the same, 1995 - 2001 infantry, could barely read or write. Met some really good people and some lizards like you say. For me the Army taught me loads of things and the opportunity's for self development are always there for the taking. I think you only get out what you put in if that makes sense?. I'd always recommend joining to anyone, it's made me the person I am today. Been in civ div a long time now, but fortunately retrained, have a University degree and now I'm engineering for a living, which was difficult, however it was the Army that gave me the self discipline and motivation to succeed in life. Hope you're doing well too bro. Take care 🙂

Joining the Army was the best thing I ever did. Did 4 years in the REME, fell victim to defence cuts and left, but what the Army taught me has carried me throughout my working life. Basic training can be tough, as you may have seen on some TV programmes. But as long as you do not take any of it personally it really moulds you into a resilient person and knocks the soft self-centred civilian out of you. Liam is absolutely right in his videos to say you need to get as fit as you can before you join up. Running, especially if you are not used to it can really take it out of you. I saw a fair bit of Europe - didn’t get any further than that, but it was an eye opener to a lad that had hardly ever been out of his home town. Way up though that you may have to go to a war zone someday. I did not happen to me, but I was shot at a couple of times accidentally during exercises! All in all, I would not have missed it for anything. 😀

I thought you were very honest during the vlogs over the months walking, lone camping with your wee tent and rucksack from the top of Scotland back down to bottom of England. The mental and physical struggles must have been challenging to say the least. You should have kept the army issue boots great for any hiking 🥾 the best pair of hiking boots a friend got me to walk my then German shepherd. Still wearing them 18 years on. For whatever reason you decide to leave the army, that's your decision and yours alone, bad form shoving your uniform into a plastic bag then stamping on it, not only disrespectful towards your muckrers!!!!!, but childish!, that's my opinion and it dose take a long time to get out, reason the Army has spent a lot of time and money so you can be trained. Four years is not a long time for someone your age, good luck with your civilian life, still not impressed with the way you stamped on your uniform that was being disrespectful but your a young man and will probably think about that later on in life probably on November the 11th!!! 🇬🇧 Ex veteran 14 years.

I did 13 years. What an adventure! Had the best 13 years of my life. Good times, some bad times, worked with some legends, worked with utter tossers that I'd gladly deck if I met them again. Got out in 2000 and regretted it but I cracked on with civvie street and now, 22 years later, semi retired, chose IT for my career, made a bit of money with my own business and I'm now four years away from my army pension and private pension. Aged 60 I'm going to travel around the world! One thing that does grape me is, I served with lads who did nothing but moan all the way through their three years (and left), threaten PVR, went home every single weekend and constantly slagged off the regiment and Army. I see them now on social media, wearing a regimental tie, cufflinks, blazer with regimental motif on the chest, regimental flag pinned to the wall, probably pyjamas with regimental motif on the breast picket! They're more army barmy now as a civvie then when they served! Work that one out!

Excellent advice Liam. I joined the RN as an officer cadet in 1968, the lowest form of life in the Royal Navy on a 5 year commission. The most important lessons I learnt were 1. How important the unity of all the regions of the UK is. 2. That you must respect the fact that just because someone is badly educated that it does not make them stupid. 3. Teamwork and loyalty. 4. Always hope for the best but plan for the worst. 4. You must learn how to speak and understand every regional dialect in the UK.

Skills, getting good pay plus reading 3 books on investing led to retiring a millionaire. The Army gives people a start but people have to continue training, developing, & improving skills their entire life.

The Sgt at the Recruiting Office in London ignored my request to be a driver, something most young men at that time wanted to be. Instead, he put me down for an army unit that I had not previously heard of . It may take some time, he said, but with your qualification and training, I am going to make sure that you join the Corps of Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. Joined I did and served 12 wonderful years with some of the greatest men that I've ever met.

I dislike bringing up an older issue but I don’t understand the hate; he was part of it and has now left, therefore entitled to do with his uniform as he wishes. The rest of the video ended up being informative and concise about a subject a lot of people don’t know a lot about. Due to his age and reach, I bet it helped a good number of youngsters considering starting a career in the forces.

Well done for serving Liam. back in my day, one signed on for 3,6,or 9 years and could not get out until those years ended.Though you did get paid extra for the signing on for the 6 or 9 years. Great advice for others too, I would add to what you said that everyone no matter what your trade, has to do basic training. Me personally that was the worse bit as I served in the Infantry and it was more physically, mentally tougher in the 1980’s. There was no health and safety, nor safeguarding, bullying was tolerated Etc. The drop out was huge nearly two thirds. Also no duvets just sheets and blankets ,and highly polished floors that needed to cleaned every day, just more bullshit..lol, clothing was different too, itchy KF shirts and jumpers lol.

Alright man MUCH LOVE AND RESPECT MAN SERIOUSLY THANK YOU.....this is a V.long comment but i think you owe it to me, A loyal sub you're 30,000+ other sub's,who tweeted you're vid's put them on FB Etc..im talking about me but i'd put my life on it many more did too...we could always..ALWAYS GET SOLID INTEL OFF OF YOU..and we respect you and can NOT thank you enough💖💪😎😂 ...BUT PLEASE READ THIS MSG MAN...... ....i get the B&M Bag LOL..got is straight away...anyone who is into service get's that BUT.. .. the title of you're vid is...WHY i left the army ( is a bit miss leading and of a let down and i'll tell you why ) ...the only thing i heard you say was and correct me if i'm wrong...but the only thing you said was...all i ever wanted to do was four years so..yea ...that's why i left ...If i loved it i would have stayed on....but..? Yea i done my 4 and i'm happy..? LEFT ME going wtf....??scratching my head,,,,and you will see why....and DEFO OTHER TOO MAN YOU have a lot of subs man over 30,000.... i think a lot of them will be let down...as in you go..there are pro's and con's,,....AND THEN DON'T SAY ANY OF THEM..?? .And that's a given..." WITH ANY JOB " .but you don't explain anything man..and pls do read on you will see i'm not hate'in on you bro...im REALLY NOT!!! you just say pick your job do 4 or do more......which i don't fully buy, read on you will see how much RESPECT and LOVE i have for you man!! I'M NOT BEEN A DICK MAN SO PLS READ ON,,,,💖💪👍 ...ALL i'm saying is the vid did not make much sense.....like you're older vid's you would go i FUCKIN LOVE THIS...and so on...this is my room cubby if you want to pass selection do THIS.. Bring this to selection..DON'T bring this and so on...YOU INFORMED US ALL,,,and THANK YOU 💖..YOU WOULD SAY... that's my advice and opinion ..bring this lighter..work out more...and THAT'S FUCKIN AMAZING,,,,AMAZING ADVICE...AND ITS WHY WE ARE ALL HERE...Cuz we ALL Respect you BRO!! BIT TIME!! OR we would NOT be HERE... ...S...o i'm NOT hating on you at ALL,,Far From IT....,i mean that..i cant thank you enough for what you have done 💪💖 and i REALLY liked tho's vid's....cuz you would go through things step by step... AND TELL US WHAT TO DO!...BUT WHAT LOL😂 WHAT NOT DO DO!! that's why i subbed you and i'd say i speak for a lot of people by saying that... BUT you never really gave an answer why you left apart from 4 years thing...which really is not a reason ...in my opinion its not...I'LL \explain fast..Yes you went in with the mind set..4 years i'm out,i'm not saying at all you are lying...ALL i'm saying is you will not say....i LOVED this when i was a COOK..I was ABLE TO DO....? I GOT AWAY with..? IF you want to be a cook DON'T DO ...?? AND SO on if you get it....AND I THINK I KNOW WHY!?! ...obviously there was things you did NOT like AND THAT COME WITH ANY JOB..not just the ARMY....any job.. and you would not voice them...? but you have a loyal fan base and they look to you to join..and you have left them scratching there head.. and like thank you for the 4 years but what was really good what was amazing,,what is the brotherhood like..what sucked..what PT was like every day..how does you BODY feel after 4 years....THESE MAN ARE REAL QUESTIONS IF WE COULD SIT DOWN AND ASK YOU WE WOULD..... SO I REALLY REALLY REALLY HOPE...for you Fan's for You're Loyal sub's 30,000+ of them..that you will make a follow up..and think back before you joined,,what you did not know AND WHAT YOU KNOW NOW!!........THAT INFO IS PRICELESS!!!! LOL YES i agree..i have NO IDEA why people leave and then want to re-enlist blows my mind.. And we are talking about service here where it is four years...not like SF where you can put you're hand up and say i don't want to do this job any more and walk away...but,, you have just confused me...i think you have A LOT to say....BUT YOU HAVE BROTHERS... that are still in you don't want to offend them and so on....i think you DEFO 100% should do a follow up vid...and say right guy's i joined as a cook and i spent 4 years doing x,y and z and here are the fuckin parts i hated and here are the parts i loved....that's normal bro ..with any thing in life..1, you will not be putting the army down you will be able to say all the good stuff 2. You will be able to say..like you used to..do this ...DON'T do that LOL😂 3. do this home work..do this with your body b4 you join 4. this is how my body feel's after 4 long years of PT...etc...? i hope you pick up what i'm throwing down..? I'm going for selection..so i'm a bit let down by this vid and i do hope you make a more clear video..then half answer ..i left cuz 4 years..and i'm NOT saying you are lying at ALL...i'm just saying you would not talk about time spent the last 4 years made you the man you are today..you got this out of it and this is what you hated..but (ME) the viewer might love..cuz we are all wired different ...so id LOVE follow up and answer all the questions everyone..deserves from been your sub and liked your vid's put them on FB and so on and so on...i think you need to tell you're whole fan base..YOUR'RE TRUE FEELING'S..... Good And Bad Cuz you did say if you loved it you would have stayed on...? but you went in with the 4 years thing.....so OBVIOUSLY there was things you did not like...you SHOULD INFORM people bro. OR inform me..i NEED to know this stuff...and i always waited for a new vid by you man..IV SO MUCH LOVE AND RESPECT FOR YOU MAN SO SO MUCH💪💖 .cuz a lot will be young 18-19 and need to hear you're opinion ..CUZ You're opinion is FUCKIN PRICELESS MAN,PRICELESS....Why..? CUZ YOU DONE IT!! you done 4 years so you're amazing man...but PLEASE do a FOLLOW up vid and say do this...lol Don't do this?..i like'd this?...i hated this? ..i did not like nor hate this it was okay..? ..bring this..and sum it all up at the end...WE NEED TO KNOW man so PLEASE INFORM US MAN PLS .....i REALLY hope you make a follow up!! to Address these few thing's.... and tank you for serving bro💖💪☠ last thing..why the comment is so long, cuz i'm going in,i want to get as much info as i can and i know,,YOU know a HELL of a LOt so i'd love to hear you really REALLY open up...I KNOW you must be busy,,but a response with you saying i wont be doing a follow up..or you address the questions a LOT of us have..would be amazing..THANK YOU AGAIN MAN, Either way..not hate..just love..NO HOMO LOL😂💖💪☠😂

Joined at 15, did 16 years and left. Loved it while I was doing it, happy to have left and moved on. Now retired and only (smallish) regret was not continuing to get the full pension. I knew where my next posting was going to be and it was an unusal and interesting one, pretty certain what the one after that would have been and maybe should have just gone with it but decided I'd had enough of gallivanting here there and everywhere and left. Now retired and looking back if it was a bad idea to leave then it was not a majorly bad idea, suspect it would not have been majorly bad idea to do another couple of good postings either but no real regrets and I have to say listening to many of the people I've met since leaving and their path to the pension - I've had an interesting and at times exciting road to Netflix watching - shit! They even make films and series about some of the things I quietly just got on with on my journey to the settee and TV controls mastery. Without the Army I would not have been enjoying the sheer contentment I know enjoy - of that I am sure. Loved every ball breaking, freezing, wet, sleep deprived, drunken, banter filled, laughing, boring, exciting, hungry, stuffed to the gills with cookhouse nosh (military cooks are without a doubt the finest on the planet - how to roast a flip flop and have grown blokes salivating at the thought of a second helping - now that's professional genius) travel the world (get pissed in much of it) and leave that part with the knowledge you've done something useful and worthwhile at the end of the tour. Loved it and would recommend it to any young lad (or lass) who feels they just want to do something out of the norm for a few years (or for the 22 pension) - Go and do it, if ti's not for you then leave with maybe a qual or two and a host of experiences the people you will move amongst from that point on will have no clue about or will envy you for. Doesn't have to be the Army of course, I'm just biased toward it. The RN and RAF and RM can offer the right person just as much and arguably even more. Follow your star as some might say.

I know this comment is two years old but if you're still thinking or anyone else is reading: join the reserves if you're not sure. It gets you a good insight into the military without jumping into it fully. You will spend time on bases, out on exercise, see what politics go on and get to hear the gripes and praises from the full timers already in. It can also open your eyes up to what the trades are like and what pros/cons there are to each.

I used the time to do my A-Levels, and the first year of my degree with the OU which I then transferred to another university. All-in-all my education was only delayed by a year, had no deployments, a cushy job in the REME and got paid for it.

I wanted to be a dog handler in the vet corps , recruitment Sgt convinced me to join as a pioneer so I can join up quicker rather than wait a Yr to join as what I wanted I got screwed . Ended up becoming a chef as you can only transfer from one "restricted trade" aka job noone wants to do to another

I'm about to go in the army but really don't know if it's for me as the army is a lifestyle and i don't know if i want to give up everything i enjoy doing for it, any advice?

I'm in the same boat as you mate. I've just applied for infantry. The way I see it, if I don't like it I can leave, I know it takes a while to leave but it's really not the end of the world if it isn't for you. I'd rather try it and quit than never try it and wish I did later in life. Go for it mate!
