A note from Jakob (the editor) on video gear:
There are a lot of things we use to make videos that I wouldn't recommend people to use for theirs. It's just stuff we had on hand, so it's what we use. That being said, there are things we use that I would recommend, and those are listed below. I'm working on putting together a FULL recommended list of equipment to get your videos looking super sharp. That's coming soon :)

John I think you reading an Indie book once a month is a great way to help out your fellow artist. I hope you never feel pressure to read any 5 star book I send you, just put it on the shelf and when you want to read a sure thing it will be there. 😏

It is a pressure in a great way. I want to share in these stories that moved you. Therein lies the magic of Art and story. Great problem to have and I am enjoying my reading now that selection is not just on my shoulders. Cmon the Belgariad took me back to my youth. What kind of alchemy is that! What a special journey this is.

Great show really enjoyed listening to you both. I've only recently started watching booktubers. Through watching you both I found Brandon Sanderson and finished the Mistborn trilogy last night. He has quickly become one of my favourite writers and I can't wait to red the rest of the Cosmere. Watching people like yourselves has renewed my love for reading and I have set myself the goal of reading at least 12 books a year. Keep up the great work and thank you! :)

I had a similar experience with Sanderson as Viking. I read WoK 4 years ago when I was just getting back into reading and thought it was one of the best books I’ve ever read. I read WoR only a few months ago and I wasn’t that blown away by it (expectations were very high tbf). I definitely think it has something to do with me being better read now.

Do not skip any Abercrombie stand alones and make sure you read the Sharp Ends short stories. Johan must have missed so many ironic moments skipping those books! That was just wacky. I think now that I am reading Liveship you do not have to wait as long as I did after Farseer. It is like reading a totally new series with just a few easter eggs from Farseer. I love love We are the Dead, it feels different than any other book. Also the Bound & the Broken really gets so much better after book 1. The Gael Song is similar, book 1 is pure set up and then book 2 takes off like a rocket. Only 5 star reads for the next few years for everyone who watches booktube.

I think unless you don't like Gardens of the Moon, at least try Deadhouse Gates. While Memories of Ice sorta completes an arc in a way, and the themes and overarching storyline is laid bare, it's not how the series typically is. The thing to know about Malazan is, this is not the story of a singular person or group. This is the story of a world during a specific time. I read Way of Kings and Words of Radiance in 2020 and loved them but 2021 was dominated by Books 2 through 6 of Malazan and then I was bingeing chunks of Dresden, and starting Farseer and Prince of Nothing, so I didn't get near Oathbringer except for Warbreaker which left a bad taste in my mouth, so when I tried to pick up Oathbringer in early 2022 I got halfway and couldn't do it. I'd left it for too long. I'd just finished Second Apocalypse and was hungering to get back to Malazan and I'm worried i won't like Stormlight now as I've soured on Sanderson's writing. I don't see Stormlight being in a Favourite series list of mine anymore, but they're weirdly good palate cleansers since Sanderson style isn't what I typical read.

I am hopeful about myself and Malazan. I am able to let go of having to know everything and trust the writer to lead me where they will. I am excited to start and see how it hits me for sure.

You *can* skip the FL standalones, but you shouldn't! Each of the standalones was written as a fresh jumping on point, and imo The Heroes is the least newcomer friendly book in the entirety of the First Law Universe. Yeah each subseries of RotE (so far) has its own self-contained plot, tho there are ongoing elements. Just don't judge the rest of the series off of Farseer. Hobb is indeed a slowburn, but very rarely boring. Dragonbone Chair was fabulous. A mix of GRRM, Hobb and GGK. Need to restart the trilogy.

I finished Revival last month and LOVED it. That first page is my top favourite page 1 of any book I have ever read. So beautifully written and discribed 🤌🏻🤌🏻🤌🏻. With no bias at all ..... Beside the fact that First Law is my top favourite series and that The Heroes is my top favourite book .... Which is irrelevant ..... I strongly recommend you continue with the series. It really just gets better and better the more in you go 😆😆😆
