So, way back when in 2012 we first got into the lightning business and let's just say the results were shocking...

I want one of these in blue, carved into a perfect sphere, then mounted on a gold faberge egg stand. I would use it as a centerpiece on my table.... if I had a nice table... or a nice dining room.... or a nice house... Good idea tho.

panther105 - I agree! I’m sure that experience was very inspirational for them. I’ve always been interested in science and I was lucky to have people in my life who encouraged my interest when I was young. I never saw an accelerator until I worked at a US national laboratory. These are some lucky kids to have seen something like this at such a young age. Unfortunately, here in the US, those kids wouldn’t have been allowed anywhere near an accelerator due to their age. Many areas of the buildings that I worked in were off-limits to anyone under 18 years old because of the risk of radiation exposure. When kids are that young, their cells are dividing so rapidly that any exposure to radiation would have a much greater chance at causing cancer. Anyway.... I’m very glad that they had that experience. I’ll bet that most of them will pursue science in the future.

That would make a very nice nightlight. Just add some LED strips face down, control board and battery or power connector to the top, and cover this assembly with an opaque black lid. Maybe add an oak wood frame simaler to an antique hourglass for that finishing touch.

so I have been researching ways I can make my dream battery happen that is glass that holds electricity form lighting a strike. do you think that plexiglass can take a hit from lightning and contain it? If Not, what kind of glass or (mix metal in the glass) would be best to hold a mass amount of electricity and contain it? Also, I know that there are ways to force a liting strike like (a small rocket with a wire attached to it ) then (a rocket that lets off a fine powder ) and so on and so forth but is there a safer way without to much cost. Another thing is.

@anikidwolfy

i own 1 of these cylinders and to actually hold it in person you get a good idea of the energy in that room, takes 3 minuets to open the door. dont get trapped in that room when that machine is firing up. =O they are definitely worth getting if you can. i may get some stand/endcaps made out of brass and have an led lite up.

I wonder if you lay the plexiglass on its side with one end resting against a spike like the one at the hammer end and then strike with the hammer will it fracture at both ends and result in lightning from both ends heading towards the middle.

The discoloration was there before you pop the holes in them. And is likely a by product of the electron process. Aka heat.

Q1: So, do you get a nasty shock if you touch the nail bit upon discharge? Q2: The shape of the discharge (the "roots") don't seem intuitive. It does not seem as if the electrons are rushing out but is rushing in via the nail bit. If that is the case, it conforms with the shape found on grass fields when lightning hits the ground. Maybe the acrylic is +ve and cracking it with a nail brings in the electrons from the air.

Lichtenberg structures, to my knowledge, are created both by particles trying to get away from each other, or particles trying to get to the same point and intersecting paths. if you look at a river including all it’s creeks and streams, it‘s also a lichtenberg structure

I don't think the discoloration is due to what you say, I think it's much simpler. The decomposition of the material from the immense amount of energy being moved around is more likely. This is obvious as if you were to fracture a non electron charged block of acrylic you would not get that same discoloration.
