I bought the Lie Nielsen No.51 Shooting Board plane in November 2018 and thought I would share the unboxing and initial use of it with you. It is a dedicated specialist hand plane for use in a shooting board and which takes fine shavings from a workpiece. It is expensive, very heavy and has a skewed blade.

I will never need or even know how to use such a fine plane. However like looking at pictures of sports cars I can not afford, I still take pleasure from watching you work and explain woodworking. Another good upload

Thanks Gordon! It is definitely a “nice to have tool” and not a “must have tool”! Very expensive but incredibly well made and allows you to take the finest shavings for the best possible fit. I don’t own any flashy cars and prefer to spend my spare cash on nice tools. Cheers 🍻😊

Hi Steve, Thank you so much for your excellent video. Always wondered what this type of plane was like in action. I have heard some people use this setup for planing short pieces of long grain timber, for decorative boxes. Hope you make another video on how to make a shooting board. Also appreciate the high resolution of your camera. All the best for the New Year to you and your family. Lignator Jack P.S. Will still have to continue with my Lie Neilsen 62 for the time being.

Hi LJ, thanks for your comments and Happy New Year to you and your family too! Glad you enjoyed the video and hope to get one out about making a shooting board sometime in the near future. Cheers Steve

I love the 51 but bought the Veritas shooting plane ,I feel the low angle works better.. you can’t go wrong with either 👍😊

Yeah it was a tricky decision to choose between the two. But my heart is with LN mostly. I had someone demonstrate both to death for me and I ended up with this one. I think there is little between them. 😊👍

My friend just received his plane, lie Nielsen no longer provides the wooden box it used to come in.

That’s a shame, the box is quite nice. At least your friend got the plane!

Steve thanks for sharing; looks like a great tool! My question is how come you’ve oriented the shooting board in this manner (parallel with the bench). I’ve usually seen it hooked to the front of the bench and the plane moving front to back (not right to left).

It’s because this is a really old shooting board which I made years ago before I had a proper bench and it was held in a black and decker workmate. So the clamping strip had to run along the length of the workmate vice. In this video I end up using it as you say, I hadn’t got round to changing the orientation of the clamping strip because I was too excited to try the new plane!! I also needed to think about how I was going to change it for this Roubo bench. There’s a few options to consider... thanks 👍😊

@@SteveCashmoreWoodworks That makes sense! I think this plane would do well with a longer board - if your workbench has the depth. One of the best shooting board builds is Rob Cosman's kzfaq.info/get/bejne/j9-WqdyY3tLdeps.html

Thanks, yeah, I’m making a new one at the moment based on Robert Wearing’s design in his book “The Resourceful Woodworker”. You can see it on my Instagram account, and I’ll be putting a video together about it soon on here. But I love Rob Cosman too, I’ve just not seen his shooting board before though.

Lee Valley Tools makes and sells shooting board tracks. You might find them useful.

Thanks very much. I don’t have a need for one though and I’m based in the UK so Lee Valley is no good for me. I’m in the middle of building my own board and it has its own adjustable rail for guiding the plane. 👍😊

Yeah, it seems to be a general global problem with supply of all sorts of things these days. The Veritas one is pretty good too according to many folk, why not have a look at it if it’s available?

Curious how you chose that over the Veritas with an adjustable mouth opening for less money.

Good question Mark. I guess it was mostly a combination of my personal preference for Lie Nielsen over Veritas and getting a 25 year (day job) work anniversary bonus. Yes, I could have saved more money but actually I don’t like lots of extra bells and whistles, if I can avoid them. The more moving parts there are, the more things can go wrong over time. Another personal preference I guess. I had a go on both of them at a woodworking show here in the UK and chatted to the sales/demo guys. The LN just felt right for me. So yeah, as with all tools, it depends on your available budget, personal preferences and bias towards one brand or another.

@@SteveCashmoreWoodworks Yeah, I have both Veritas and Lie Neilsen stuff. My bronze number 4 is unbefreakinlievable. But I have also been collecting old Stanley and installing a Hock blade in them. Highly recommended. I'm pretty sure I'll never justify the cost of a dedicated shooting plane though. Hobby ;-)

I’ve got some smaller Veritas planes (small router and scraper) but that’s it. Got some Clifton’s and LNs. One or two Record/Stanley’s too. So it depends what’s available at the time for secondhand planes and some were bought brand new like this LN 51. I’ve been doing this as a hobby for over 20 yrs now and only just bought the LN51. It was the right time and yes I could live without it! ☺️
