@@sr6571 Capitalism requires a seller and a customer. Consumerism is the way in which that seller deceives the customer to make them buy more. The “being sold a new identity every few months” is consumerism. It is a strategy used by sellers so that they can exploit our human nature and addictive mentalities to make more money off of us. But you can, as a customer, choose to not give in to the consumerism. That’s not anti-capitalist. Capitalism is an economic system not a selling strategy. If you don’t agree with the trends, don’t buy from them. Because you live in a capitalist economy, you are able to choose whether you follow the trends of consumerism or not. Just because many of us are fooled doesn’t mean we don’t have the option to snap out of it. Greed is what drives consumerism -> Consumerism is the habit of buying unnecessary new things routinely -> And capitalism is the system under which all of it operates. But capitalism is too broad to be an appropriate word to use here. I find very often people call anything they dislike in the economy “capitalist.” Small businesses are “capitalist” too. Vaccine development is “capitalist” too. Free trade is “capitalist” too. Rather than blame capitalism for existing, maybe blame society for allowing itself to be manipulated by the temptations of huge multinational corporations.

I would add a rule to this: Don't limit yourself to the women's section. Some of my most favourite and long-lasting sweaters and more casual tops came from the men's section. As well, if you're a larger person (like me!) men's sizes in T-shirts and such tend to just run larger, so the fit is more generous than women's.

As a small woman I also prefer men's t-shirts. Men's T-shirts, small size, are too big for me, so I buy from the children's section, but the fit is so much better than the women's t-shirts that are more tighter and uncomfortable to wear

When crop tops came "back" in style (im not even sure why they were out of style to begin with) I find my new passion. I will never not wear crop tops. It's been years now and theyre so flattering to/on me. I say stay away from trends, but be wary of *styles*. I would say skinny jeans / high waisted jeans are also a "trend" depending on the decade. But maybe you like bootcut or boyfriend or bellbottoms. Wear what you like and not because its a trend. I hate mom jeans bc they arent flattering on me, but boy are they gorgeous on some other people. And id say that trend has been going for years now and people still wear mom jeans. The "trends" i stay away from are certain patterns or fabrics. Like velver was a trend in 2016~2017. And i hate velvet. The same for cheetah/animal print. Thats been back in style since last year and im not a fan. Also when floral was a trend again around 2017, i was not a fan. The same goes for "statement pieces" like a ceryain hairstyle or hairpiece thats a trend (last year it was puffy headbands, the past few years it's been "tiny sunnies") You will never catch me dead wearing a statement piece or trend. But I do think "trends" such as things that are BRAND new can affect people. Like softboys wearing skirts. It isnt the first time boys or men have worn skirts, but I do think that the "trend" is important bc it opens a discussion. The same with things like wearing tops without a bra. I havent worn a bra since crop tops came out and I swear I will only buy sportsbras for the gym or i have one bra for formal purposes / work.

@bladeofSteele 3 жыл бұрын
@@MyFictionalChaos I mostly agree with you, but lol I have actually found new loves for things like floral and cheetah that I didn't love the last time they were popular, because I've changed so much. If it weren't for them coming back and making me look at them again as a different "me", I would have numerous less things in my wardrobe that supplement me living my happiest life truest to "me" today :3 but, even with me liking cheetah now, I'm still not going to buy hot pink crushed velvet cheetah printed items. That definitely won't last, and I'm more than happy with a classy variety of what's trending.

@@hideakisorachi3953 I don't have any thrift shops in my area either. They don't really exist in my country. We have some second hand shops, but they are either for designer clothing or children's clothes. I mostly get my clothes from ebay or flea markets. Ebay can be a treasure trove, if you know which search terms to use. Just look up some old catalogues or ads to figure out what some styles are called or from which decade they are or which subculture they belong(ed) to. Sometimes it can help to know which trends inspired other trends. For example I love 70s platforms, but they are hard to find, worn down or expensive. But the 90s took a lot of inspiration from the 70s in some aspects. Stuff from the 90s is much easier to find. Or do the complete opposite and just look into any ebay category without entering a search term and see what catches you eye. Some people can't tag to save their lives or don't know what they are actually selling and so their items don't show up in searches. I got some great stuff that nobody else bid on because nobody could find it. You can also practice sewing or alterations on items that you no longer wear. If it turns out well you get a new item to wear, if not it's not a big loss because you weren't wearing it anyway. Most of all, take your time. In the beginning it's hard to build a wardrobe, because we are often limited by various factors (income, skills, family, work/school, fashion knowledge, confidence, availability). But once you have a few good pieces, you can mix them with the stuff you already own until you can replace that with more items you love. Most of us took years with many trials and errors to get to a place that finally felt like 'this is me'. I hope this can help you a bit.

I dressed mostly black/alternative in school which was always an issue for some teachers and classmates' parents. Once we had an event where the dress code was fancy, so I wore a gorgeous pink floral dress, white heels, fake pearls, the whole fantasy. All my classmates came in black dresses. It was so surreal and absurd. I'll never forget it. My everyday looks for which I was criticised were their fancy look because fashion dictated it.

I absolutely love all of your tips! I have developed my own fashion rules in my 20s: 1. If it’s dry clean only, don’t buy it. I’m too cheap to want to spend money on dry cleaning. Don’t buy hand wash only staples. I’m too lazy to keep up with that. 2. If it attracts excessive cat hair it’s too impractical to wear. My animals are my lifestyle. If it doesn’t fit my lifestyle it doesn’t fit me. 3. Grunge pieces and black clothes stay in my wardrobe the longest and get worn the most. These are my investment staples that make sense for me. 4. As much as I’d love to be the gothic queen on the outside that I know I am on the inside, whenever I buy goth clothing they are very hard to incorporate seamlessly into my wardrobe and end up not being worn. I have to be very selective about introducing gothic items 5. I’m not a fancy person with a lot of formal places to go. I only need a few formal pieces in my wardrobe. I shouldn’t invest too much money or closet space on formalwear

As a 35 year old woman, I want to echo that this is all fantastic advice. For example, I've now just basically stopped wearing synthetic fabrics because they all make me sweat horribly and I realize no matter how much I love them I just don't wear them. (Rayon frequently makes it into my "loves" list because it has the drape of poly without being synthetic!) I'll also say that if you do love something synthetic, undershirts are a lifesaver if they make you sweat, preferably good quality ones in model, cotton, or even silk if you can afford it.

I’ve never understood why everyone assumes that ‘neutral colours’ are just white, black, and grey. Cause that’s just not true. Neutrals can be cream, skin tones, terracotta, clay pinks, earthy greens and many more. Whites, blacks and greys can be nice neutrals but they almost exclusively look good on people with cool skin tones. I do think it is good to have a neutral tank top to use as an undershirt and I would rather have a cream tank top or a tank top that matches my skin tone. And yes Jean jackets are so overrated especially since I don’t consider a coat or jacket to be a staple. I like my coats and jackets to be statement pieces. I like my jackets and coats to be unique and colourful as well as versatile especially since I live in Canada where we get a wide variety of weather. I “matured” from wearing jeans and “sensible” clothes that I felt were boring but hey I was ugly anyway, to dropping the jeans for skirts and dresses and going more goth until I got on the internet and found what I’d secretly wanted my entire life. The lolita style. My eyes widened, hands shaking as I placed my order and... I love it. I stick out like a sore thumb where I live but I love my lolita inspired clothes, I still want to stay practical so nothing too poofy and it has to be machine washable and yeah I don’t own an iron either. While my appearance hasn’t changed much now I actually like clothes! I used to not care because nothing you saw around here really excited me but waking up the child in me has made me feel happy. So what if people think I’m too old (actually they always seem to think that I’m way younger than my physical age but whatever) I’m not dressed like this for anyone but myself. Obviously there’s a slight issue when the temperature here can range from around -20 Celsius to closer to or above 30 during a heatwave in that things should preferably be able to go with or without (thermo) leggings, but on top you have your spring/autumn coat or winter coat outside so that’s a-okay. It’s mainly the problem of not being able to put a pair of outer trousers on when you only wear dresses and skirts, that’s why thermoleggings and even layering them with a pair of normal ones is a neat trick. I sew the crotch of my leggings for as long as possible, my grandpa taught me how to fix elastics when he fixed his socks. Thanks grandpa 🙏

Great to see another person that loves Jfashion/kawaii fashion! I get that stick out like a sore thumb feeling, because I’ve also received gross comments and odd looks when I wore sweet lolita in public. That isn’t gonna stop me from wearing it though, because like you said we are dressing up for ourselves! :) Thermo/heattech leggings are indeed life changing!! I’m assuming you’re Canadian as well.

I realized those tips when I was a teen; here are a few more: - realize a few colors you like that match you (hair color, skin tone) and buy important things in them or colors that match them great - you will create an interchangable wardrobe - buy at all sections; mens' jumpers and shoes they wear with suits are very comfy, long-lasting and mens' T-shirts are usually made better from better materials - for some, the perfect jeans exist; I have a few pairs of jeans I wore as a 14yo and are still great, even tho they are highwasted and tight af; you need to find your staples and what caters to your needs

@@kaitpeters933 Coward of what? Saying clothes are from the men's or women's section is just descriptive. They are different, after all. If you get the same size in men's it will be larger, so it's important to note. It's not 'gendering clothes' to describe them that way because that's how they're seperated. It would be nice if they just had one size scale and seperated between masculine and feminine sections, but it's predominately based on the fact that men are more often than not larger than women. If you're a bigger girl you typically shop men's clothes because they're bigger and you'd be hard pressed to find graphic tees in the women's sections anyway. (I have had to have my partner talk to my mom because she was going so wild about my size increase, even though we don't live at home anymore. That bad.) Meanwhile, I've been spending the last couple of years trying to reinvent my wardrobe to be more myself and more ecological. Every piece of advice out there seemed to come from rich, skinny people, with lots of time and energy. My clothes are how I want to present myself to the world, but lately, it seemed that I was just too 'wrongly' built to ever fit my own ideals. Then I stumbled on this video. I agree and disagree on the “trainers” thing. I totally agree that converse are the cargo pants of shoes but I do think that everyone should have one really comfortable pair of sport shoes that are specifically for the type of exercise you most enjoy doing. I spent my early 20s thinking I could do everything in office flats and injured myself because I couldn’t be bothered to buy a decent pair of tennis shoes. I recently bought some and it’s been a game changer. You don’t need to go all MTV Cribs and own a closet full but it’s a worthy investment to have a pair of sport shoes you can go full throttle in when you need to.

For me, I never buy a new pair of shoes bc ive never been a shoe girl but after years ive realize ive been wearing out things from a decade ago. I think it's good to invest in a new or trendy pair of shows bc theyre just gonna wear eventually. Thats something I just realized in my 20s. I have the opposite problem compared to those who buy too many shoes - I dont buy enough! For me, it should be a pair of running shoes for the gym/running, a pair of sneakers for every day, a pair of boots for the rain, a pair of sandals for the beach, and a nice formal pair. Ive been wearing converse for years and theyve completely disintegrated bc I refuse to spend money on clothes. The same for my beach sandals -- I threw them out a year ago and always have to borrow someone's for the beach. I think it is mindful to make sure you have a nice pair of shoes that you can use for most things, and for me a good pair of sneakers fits most occasions for every day.

I've honestly bought so many clothes that I thought were ''IT'' when it was actually just be jumping on a new bandwagon and then realizing it doesn't suit me or my body. I had the goth phase, pastel goth phase, full pastel phase, and the phase where you just buy items that your favourite youtubers/celebs wear that end up looking awful on you but you spent 40 pounds on and never wore! Luckily though 1 thing that I have always loved and never changed is my love for blouses, circle skirts, pleated skirts or just any skirt that flares out nicely, and ofcourse baggy sweaters! I even have some old pieces from my pastel phase that I still love, though I realized full pastel isn't my thing, I do love my pastels combined with my blacks. Now I just don't buy anything, I did recently buy 1 sweater because it had a very intricate design and is 100% my style, and a beautiful dress that was made from recycled fabric and was way too hard to replicate myself~ Outside of that, my sister sadly is a shopaholic who also buys from brands like Shein and then never wears them and throws them out, but that also means I often get even more items that I would actually like to wear as our styles do overlap. I now just try to not buy anything, and focus on potentially upcycling pieces or making my own as I still have bags of wool that I bought 2 years ago which I'm gonna make lots of sweaters with. I actually feel bad about how many items I've bought throughout the years, that I ended up never using, and were also made of plastic. Combine that with my mindset of still thinking that spending over 100 pounds on anything is too much, some bad things have happened. But I'm just gonna focus on the effects I can have now and also finally focusing on my dream style instead of everything thats just ''in fashion''. I also fully agree with the pants vs skirts thing, my pants always end up ripping around the thighs as they are THICC, and I sweat like a bull. I've also always preferred skirts and pants irritate my skin and just don't feel comfortable, sadly I live in a cold climate though but I might start wearing warm skirts with stockings because I'm tired of these damn pants I tell ya! And I love the tip about the shape around the arm pit area, this might explain why almost all my pieces usually do last longer because most sweaters and blouses I buy aren't too tight around that area, but I never realized this could be something important!

I saw a tweet a few days ago that said "clothes are supposed to float in and out of your life" which I found puzzling because if you're replacing your clothes all the time how do you have favourites? If you have a favourite type of thing why get rid of it and get a new one when it's not worn out or the wrong size? I have a red tartan button down shirt that I've had for 5 years because it's a layering classic for me and it's not worn out. I'm still finding my staples but I'm at least doing it sustainably.

Everything you said about “basics” is SO TRUE. We’re all different, so why would our “basics” be the same as someone else’s? I’ve suckered myself into buying things that are outside of what I usually wear before, but I just never wear those things for long. I know what works for me, which is mostly just a wardrobe of black cardigans for any occasion. Also!!! A tip for those who have struggled with having to buy new shoes/socks because your feet sweat a lot: bamboo socks! I’ve noticed that they last longer and my feet stay daisy fresh and so do my shoes. Best investment decision I’ve ever made!

On the subject of running trainers: when the treads wear out, your knees, ankle, hips etc. are more likely to get hurt just because there is less padding than your feet are used to. All this to say...ya gots ta replace your running shoes.

If your running shoes are uncomfortable to run in, that’s a sign that they need replacing before they start to _hurt_ to run in.

Oh you just popped up on my recommended feed and as a fellow 30something I’m so happy and agree with ALOT! Especially me laughing after I realised the person that was giving me (a person living in Sweden) advice on dressing for cold winter weather was a LA-girl who got really confused when people said okey what do you mean stay warm in just pantyhose’s. Some thoughts I’ve realised throughout my years are; You don’t have to dress in just one way, sometimes I look like a scruffy dude who probably smells but I still kind of want to french. Other days I dress myself in the most tight fitted dresses and look like I’m an evil stepmother from an early 2000s movie with Lohan.

Ain’t this the truth. I leave the house in fall with an extra fleece, coat, and snow gloves - in case of a temperature drop - as well as a raincoat, in case it pours. But, all of those things are things I’ve had for years of unpredictable weather and they’re in colors I like.

Knee-high, waterproof, wool-lined, NON-UGLY winter boots that took YEARS to find? Yes! my mum is a great inspiration for me when it comes to clothes, not bc we have similar styles but bc everything she buys she actually wears. so even if she has a bigger wardrobe i know 100% she'll take care of each piece and wear it for at least 10 years. she also taught me that anyone can wear any colour they like, you just have to find a shade that goes well with your skin tone :)
