I had a thought as I was listening to this that might add to the theory. If Arbor Gold has an "opposite" in ASOIF, it would be Dornish Red. As I recall, Dornish Red was the drink of choice of the Hound, who famously hated lies. Connection? Might be, could be. At any rate it would be interesting to do a similar breakdown of Dornish Red and it's connection to truth, if there is one, in the books.

Plus there’s not as many memorable or quotable moments in Feast or Dance as there is the first three books. Ned’s death is in Game. The battle of Blackwater is in Clash. The Red Wedding, the series defining moment, is in Storm. The Euron intro at the Kingsmoot is pretty cool, but I can’t get show Greyjoy out of my head. And Dance has the great line: So young," said Wyman Manderly, "Though mayhaps this was a blessing. Had he lived he would've grown up to be a Frey.

I read the first book when it came out in paperback back in 1997, got Clash in hardcover as a 35th birthday gift from my brother, was walking through an airport coming home from Hawaii and saw Storm sitting there on display. I really enjoy seeing new readers discover these books, new channels come along like Quinn's that give good analyses.

I’m sure it’s been covered before, but it’s interesting that House Redwyne are not Goldwyne and their sigil is a red grape. You can make a white or gold wine by removing the skins. So it seems that arbor gold is just made from red grapes similar to dornish reds but the wine itself is a lie to be presented as something unique. Notice that in the books it’s referred to as singular Arbor Gold. But for dornish wine it’s plural “dornish reds”
@JimRFF
@JimRFF Жыл бұрын
I really like the idea that not only is the wine a bit of dramatic irony for us the readers to understand as a lie, but that it's also a lie in-world if the grapes really aren't any better than cheaper Dornish varieties, but the removal of the skins to change the color is enough to trick the average person in to believing it is a "superior vintage" and paying out the nose... after all, power resides where men believe it resides

As soon as your image of Ulf White came up, I went, "Holy shit." You cracked the code for sure, and that one seals it for me. GRRM frequently uses his peripheral stories to reinforce the patterns and themes of the main series. I will indeed be looking out for the phrase in the next book.

How do you feel about other false/fools gold references? He can't exactly have every lie tied to a wine. Arbor Gold might be part a more general fools gold theme. We encounter Lem with his Lemoncloak. Sansa and her love if lemon cakes, which might suggest a sort of being fed lies. The lemon tree in Dany's memory suggesting falsehoods about her childhood. The false gold also pops up people describe his use of off gold colour. It might also include references to pee. When Varys trades the wine it's for a baby from a suggestive area of the city.

Also this reminds me of a confusing detail to me in the books. Everybody seems to praise “Dornish Red” as some kind of superior wine. But isn’t Dorne basically Dune/Arrakis? Have you ever tried growing grapes in the desert? I have my doubts that it can possibly be the spot for ideal vineyards. Am I wrong?

Parts of it yes but the Greenblood (basically the Nile) runs through it and would be a great place for growing grapes (I think)
@bsword0311

Grapes grown in hot climates generally grow bigger and are sweeter because they can grow easier, this makes it so when they ferment the extra sugar makes the wine more alcoholic, this could explain why everyone loves Dorneish wine because it is more alcoholic
@qwopiretyu
@qwopiretyu Жыл бұрын
There's no such thing as a single biome nation. If there's no arable land you can't have a nation because you can't feed an army to protect it. You need SOME domestic food production so obviously Dorne can feed itself as it's been independent longest and most.
@johnnye87
@johnnye87 Жыл бұрын
IIRC Dornish red is generally described as "sour", but not necessarily in a derogatory way as it does seem quite popular and expensive. The implication seems to be that Arbor gold is sweeter and more palatable than more punchy and "obvious" Dornish red. Like a good lie, it's attractive and easy to swallow.

That's a bit like theorizing that there will likelv be violence when the author mentions a unsheathed blade. If characters are drinking arbor wine, it means 1) they are rich and 2) they have free time. Asoiaf characters who are rich and have time on their hands are definitely up to no good But more importantly, how often are charachters deceptive without the author mentioning arbor gold? Most of the series is about people lying to each other and to themselves
