I’m glad I’m not alone in having issues in art classes. My teacher would yell at me for being the slowest drawer. :/ I enjoy taking my time in art to make sure it’s the best that I can physically draw. (I once spent 7 hours drawing grass once) It’s hard when art teachers complain about how quick or slow you are at drawing. Since I was the slowest drawer in my class.

Everyone’s like “art teachers hate anime” but that’s completely the opposite with mine. She encourages us to draw anime, and we even did a project studying anime.

I’m not an artist, but to me it always seemed like there were a lot of opportunities for an artist with all the platforms, like Instagram, TikTok, Pinterest, KZfaq (where my history is just filled with Hamilton art animatics) WEBTOON, etc, so it was really surprising to me when you said there were only 2 paths given in college

Another lie: "Stress is good for you." But they never say where the line is drawn. So they cram 4-5 final assignments in each semester (mine is 4 months per semester) and expect us to do well and have our sleep schedule intact.

I guess this goes for pure art schools cause in my Uni, the art department was sorta "meh" on fanart and anime, mostly bc the art curriculum pushes for modernism and design and not really for pure fine art. In fact, alot of drawing teachers at my school respected anime and never outright hated anime or comics or cartoons. They mentioned, however, that there should be a focus on fundamentals and building a strong foundation. Edit: there WAS this old fogey fine art painter teacher who talked about how the school didn't go for rennaissance style art when it comes to practice and preferred Modern Art(tm)

I personally think that fanart can help me practice different facial designs and facial expressions. Because it kinda forces you to look more closely at the features of the characters face that make them look more recognisable.

I think the worst part of my actual art school, or at least for what concerns my first year, is that they don't even force you to use specific programs. Oh no They literally look at you in disgust if you only DARE say that you work mostly on digital art. I literally had a professor tell me that "You'll never get anywhere and you'll always be a failure, you and your digital art" just because I passed my traditional sketch on my PC to put proportions in check and see if everything checks out. I had to fight my way over for a whole year to show that traditional and digital are not enemies, they can be used together like I always do, and the result is of the same quality weather is a traditional sketch or a digital sketch. It's infuriating, and I felt like garbage for a whole year trying to prove that my worth is in my works, not if I draw on paper or on a tablet. Fortunately this year I found an amazing professor that actually encouraged me all the way, and still encourage me to follow my path and follow what I do best, but it still bugs me to no end this utter and not concealed disgust towards digital art.

Even though I don't have many artists in my family, one thing I'm super grateful is how much my family believes in me and my art. Whether it was traditional, digital, or anything else my family would always try to help me get whatever supplies I needed to continue art. I still have a long way to go, but I think I've gone so much farther because of my family. Thank you, family.

I remember in 6th grade we were making art for a competition. The theme was hopes and fears. I drew myself in a cave of failure trying to reach the end, which was the light of success. I drew in a cartoony style and my art teacher kept on coming over and would take the pencil from me, drawing my work in her own way, making it realistic, while giving me suggestions. Every time she left, I erased the work she had done and would do it again in my own way. She told me I was doing it wrong and I told her that it was MY work, and if I wanted it without details, I wouldn’t make details. She gave me a lower-than-usual grade but I didn’t care. As long as she kept her nose out of my style preferences, I was fine.

My art teacher called every type of cartoons as anime, and basically hated animation. He tried to change my entire style. In the end as a little f you, I made a realistic drawing of Danny Phantom. He had no choice but to judge a cartoon based on “the bases he had taught”. It was glorious

I just think art at school should be about expressing yourself, but the school system says "No, now draw fruit as realistic as possible or you fail" like WHAT?!

This was super helpful! coincidentally, ive been hearing a lot recently about how art schools can misguide you and these exact lies can get into your head. So hearing this from someone who has experienced art school, and what isn’t false information, really helped me see the bigger picture :)

About the fanart comment: everyone in the pjo fandom knows about this artist but for those of you that don't. There's been a big fanartist for percy jackson for years that rick riordan actually made her the official artist for the series.

My art teacher actually had us do assignments that allowed us to create fanart, so I guess it just depends on the art teacher.

I spent 6 years ot of my life in art school and those were honestly a nightmare. Our teacher was very strict and conservative, and we didn't exactly have the best relationship. We studied 2-4 hours a day, and we had 1-2 little breaks to, you know, relax a little bit. I would spend those coloring (I was, and still am, a huge fan of coloring books), or drawing fanart (mostly my little pony pictures), or doing something of sort. My teacher never liked this. She would come up to me and tell me to stop wasting my time on dumb things that would get me nowhere. And, yeah, that fanart wasn't real art, that I enjoyed coloring just because I was too lazy, that I should grow up, etc. I also always was a huge fantasy lover. And we had a class where we were allowed to draw whatever we wanted... In theory. Of course, every sketch we did have to be approved by the teacher. And guess what, she never approved of anything I suggested that had any fantasy elements in it. She would say it was "nonsense" or "stupid" or "unrealistic" and she would force me to draw something completely different. Once, instead of a flying ship, like I wanted, she made me draw a woman sitting by the campfire. Obviously, I did a terrible job. Another thing I was very sad about is that we were never allowed to choose our medium. I personally don't work that well with paint, but I'm much better with pastels, colored pencils, etc. Nobody cared though. If we worked with colour, we had to use paint. And yes, my teacher knew about my preference. Once she even complimented me on a little picture I did for fun with colored pencils. She was like, "Wow, that's quite good, I wish all your artwork looked like this. Why can't you always draw like this?" She didn't even let me use pencils for my graduation work. Worst part is, she sincerely thought she was doing it all for my sake. After our graduation, she came up to me and said: "You're a good girl,you have potential, just get rid of all that useless stuff in your head". I remember being really upset. After graduating from art school, I stopped doing art for 2 years because I hated it. Then I slowly came back to it, and now I'm perfectly happy doing my colored pencil fanart for mlp. On one hand, I'm really grateful that art school gave me some important basic knowledge and skills, and perhaps my art wouldn't look so nice now without it. On the other hand, it really destroyed my will to do art and, more importantly, my self-esteem. I'm still struggling sometimes to feel good about my art and my hobbies, even though it has been 5-6 years already. Sorry for such a long and late comment, I just watched the video, and remembered all of that, and I needed to get it all out somehow.

I had this brutally honest art instructor during a workshop, one of my favorite guys ever. He sat us all down and said "I'm going to show you the work, I'm going to show you what and how, and I'm going to suggest the assignment, but I won't care if you don't turn it in, if you're unmotivated, that's on you, you're ultimately my future competition, and if you fail to do the work, that's one less person to worry about later" I laughed so hard as the jaws of my fellow workshop students dropped. He also used to tell us all about the lies of the art academies, his favorite to bring up was connections. He would tell us, "you get connections by going out into the world, not hoping someone suggests you inside a campus"

In my beginner's painting class, my teacher told us the risks of like cadmium paints and we used hirs instead. He encouraged us to wear gloves while painting too so we could keep it from getting on our skin.

Most frustrating question I had to answer: Non-artist: can you draw me? Me: no, I can't draw people. Non-artist: if you can draw dragons really well, then you can draw people too! Me: that's not how it works Non-artist: yes it is Me: how would you know it's not like you draw as much as I do! Non-artist: oh

I'm not even a good artist because I stopped art for a couple times because I was upset that I wasn't as good as my friends were. And now, I'm picking it up again, starting with shape study and sketch. So certain advice I hear nowadays can be really discouraging. Especially if that advice comes from a good artist. Like, I only draw fan art or my own characters, and hearing a good artist or an art teacher saying that this style won't get you anywhere, especially if you're passionate about the style is really heartbreaking.

My art teachers actively contributed to me more or less giving up art. I spent 8 years hardly picking up a pencil because I was constantly told things like 'You won't be able to do that.' 'No, no more anime drawings.' and my favourite, 'If only she'd stop drawing pixies and dragons'. I got back into drawing through a combination of necessity and fanart and I'm really thankful I did. To be fair, a lot of things that are possible for artists now weren't a thing back then, but they still should have encouraged me to draw the best damn pixies and dragons I possibly could instead of slowly killing my enthusiasm for my favourite thing.

Fan art is the best way,not only are you doing something you love,on social media fanart is also the most easy way to gain followers because it brings a bunch of people who like those characters to you and wants to see more,a random character doesn't do as well as a well known one from a show or a game,and like you said,people get hired because of those fanarts. Ofc its very important to practice your own imagination and realization but this is a great way too, in art no way is a wrong way.

Ok so the part about toxic paints is absolutely valid and true, but you left out that it is only a small number of *pigments* that do it, not colors. There isn't a specific shade of orange that can be toxic, but there is a specific orange pigment that can be toxic (usually cadmium). To be sure, look at the pigment identification number (ie PB28, or pigment blue 28, for a cobalt blue) not just the name. You also left out that this isn't just for acrylics, but for all types of paint. But an upside is that paint companies are starting to phase out using those toxic pigments in their paints. Now either having mixes/hues of that color, removing them from preselected sets, and/or making them more expensive to make people reconsider buying them. Ok that's the end of this massive PSA

I am glad that some art schools are changing this now. I just got accepted in an art school and guess what 80% of my portfolio consisted of? Fanart drawn in manga style. Got an A+ on my portfolio. I asked my future teachers how they got the idea to become a good and modern art school and they just shrugged and said "Manga and fanart sell" And I love that 😁

The funny thing is the only reason I got into drawing was because of fan art. I wanted to recreate the character with my own interpretation and see how they would look. I also just liked the character.

I have a funny (kinda) experience with art teachers: My fifth grade art teacher was very very strict, and always wanted us to draw “perfect”. I’m not exactly the best in traditional art, although I’m waaay better at digital art (not on a level that I personally like, but still better) and I once mentioned that I do digital art in class and she went off “Oh, digital art? If you ask me (jokes on you, I didn’t ask) it’s not even real art.” Without giving any real reason. And since she was one of my favorite teachers, it totally discouraged me and I stopped doing art for about 2 years. My 7th grade teacher tho, was different. Yes, she was strict, but she wanted us to explore it on our own. She had certain standards but everyone was free to figure out the way they would meet these standards. After I have gotten back to digital art, I once asked her while cleaning the classroom what she thought about digital art. Her answer was “I personally think that digital art is an amazing form of art. It gives the artist more opportunities to explore, without being afraid that they wasted too much money in the medium. It’s complicated and complex in its own way, which makes it really unique! I don’t think it’s invalid just because it’s a screen” and this made me really happy!
