Bulletproof: Mac
Mac Denniston was 14 when a mountain bike accident nearly cost him his life. He suffered a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), and there was no certainty as to what extent he would recover.
Mac had been incredibly competitive at sport. He stood out as an excellent rugby player, and made the Otago Junior team. The TBI changed all that. Mac has had to learn to walk again and he is still trying to gain more control over the left side of his body.
The injury still causes a lot of fatigue, which meant Mac has had to slowly return to school work. However, 18 months on from the accident Mac sees positives in having to re-evaluate his life and his future. Supported by his family, his mates and the Alexandra community, he is making remarkable progress.

Amazing progress! I’m a person who’s had two spinal fusion surgeries and it’s taken me the best part of 10 years to be somewhat normal again. What you’ve done in 18 months is insane. Keep rocking on!

You probably said, but I can't recall (2 time significant TBI survivor with a concussion, mild TBI RN), when you had this injury. After the second significant TBI, a neurologist told me to expect no further recovery. With tremendous effort, I continued to have improvements for many years! With your tenacity, family support and resources, you could continue to see improvement. 💜

I really appreciate you sharing this story. It helped me feel really seen and heard and it was really encouraging to hear not only about somebody who lives with a TBI but also who’s a teen like me. So thanks.

Seeing Mac at the Wilson Centre brought back memories of when my son was there. It’s a wonderful place. The brain can do amazing things. All the very best, Mac. Onwards and upwards. Don’t feel bad about resting and sleeping. Your brain needs it, in those rest periods your brain is healing and building pathways. It will get better, but it takes a long time.

I too had a head injury. 5 months in a dark room, hardly any stimulation for 7 months. 4 years later I still suffer problems.

I had a brain injury before I was born. Doctors said that it was the most severe intraventricular hemorrhage that a premature infant could have, and didn’t expect me to learn how to walk. However one of the doctors who examined me told my parents that I would keep meeting my developmental milestones, just on my own time and learning curve. And on top of that I had hydrocephalus and still have the same ventriculoperitoneal shunt that I had received when I was only a few weeks old.

Glad you’re doing well despite the brain injury. I remember in my psychology class, we learned of kids that would have to have half of their brain removed. They aren’t technically just as capable as everyone, as they had adapted to do everything they need to with just that one side, but still it’s remarkable how they can function just fine. Babies and very young children have an easier time adapting to stuff like that. It’s really fascinating. Again, glad you’re well. Have a good life :)

27 year TBI survivor from a bad car wreck here on 3/31/97... I was in the hospital 26 days and Physical Therapy 18 months... I struggle with repeating myself, poor multitasking skills, poor short term memory etc... I failed at several careers post TBI-( Special Education Teacher,Car Salesman,911 Radio Dispatcher) due to my TBI issues... The combination of dealing with my TBI issues,PTSD issues, and career failures led to increased depression, anxiety and suicidal thoughts... I FINALLY now have a somewhat decent quality of life... I FINALLY received SSDI-( Social Security Disability Income ) after 15 years,4 appeals and 3 attorneys.. I now drive for a car dealership and build Model Cars as a hobby... These activities give my life meaning, help me deal with my TBI and PTSD issues, and improve my self esteem...

This really helped me understand my own brain injury. (Though I’m a lot older!). One, I had eye surgery but still have double vision out of my left eye (before surgery I had complete double vision) which makes me realize it was the TBI and not the eye injury causing this, two, “a brain rest is sometimes just as good as a nap,” (so true), three, short-term memory is a lot worse and four, gait is off. (He didn’t say this but I think a TBI effects one’s gait.) Oh, my accident definitely changed my temperament… for the better! (It humbles you.)

Praise God for his recovery! Attitude is the determining factor in recovery. A positive, can do, attitude will get you far. A negative, I'm not the same, or I can't do, will hinder one's recovery more than any physical ailment!

How are you now? I got one too. Not quite as bad as you, but bad. It took years but I am much better so you do have hope. My vision was messed up, cognitive fatigue, PCS, etc. Look into quality fats like wild salmon, avocado, Ghee, EVOO, Walnuts, etc. For me, walking and bouncing a ball helped and...TIME. Give it time. Measure your progress ever 6 months at a time. Don't be in a rush. Even Matt Hughes is doing great today and he was worse then you. Look into his clinic maybe. Neuroplasticity is real. NUTRITION is your friend and rest.

Even with a helmet, depending on the accident, a TBI can occur. Helmets just lessen that chance/lessen the severity of a TBI.

Attitude usually answers those kinds of questions in their films. If it were a different maker, not mentioning it would probably mean that, but here I don't think we know.
