My father had his aortic valve replacement done in September 2021, at the age of 73. With it, he had 5 bypasses put in. Took him 30 days to recover in the ICU and CCU. It was a took road to recovery for the first 3 months after the surgery, and by his 74th birthday in december he was much better. Then 2022 came along and he started working out on his health, on a bench with light weights. His INR remained in check for the next 4 months and regular doctor visits helped him to keep track of his progress. Summer of 2022 came along in June and he developed a light internal bleed, which remained undiscovered as the doctors for weeks couldn't find where the bleed was. He recovered slightly around July and had another internal bleed when he was about to be discharged, right after the Eid holidays, that's when his liver and kidneys shut down do to the slow internal bleed where his heart would beat about 200bpm. He fought hard to stay alive in those days and it was humbling to take care of my father like he did for me when i was a little child. He breathed his last at 8 25 AM on 27 July 2022, leaving behind a dedicated wife and mother to two strong independent sons and a beautiful grand daughter who misses him and visits him at his grave to this day. I miss you, baba. Thank you for having the courage for doing the surgery and having a good 9 more months with your family who'll always love you.

I have had 2 open heart surgeries. Aug 5, 2020 my tricuspid valve was removed. Jan 14, 2021 my pig tricuspid value transplant took place. Now every 10 years 15 if lucky I get to have open heart surgery to replace my pig valve. It's scary but I'm so blessed to be 45 and alive still. I'm so glad to everyone on here with new heart valves!! Love all of you!!

I'm 59, and had mitral valve replacement, after being able to barely make it to the top of my stairs. I had 1 Dr. tell me I was ok, and go home, come see me again in 6 months. I didn't listen to him and went to the ER at Sentara Heart Hospital in Norfolk VA or there about. BEST thing I could have done. They caught it early and replaced the valve. I feel fine and even jump on the trampoline with a 5 yr old. Was the 1st time I'd had any major surgery. Never even a broken bone. Took almost a month for me to get out of the hospital, due to a complication with water retention and the need to have another tube, reinstalled to drain fluid, but other than 1 nurse, wanting to treat me like a sack of tatters when she'd come in to get me up, I had a GREAT experience. Anybody needing this done, expect a catheter to pee, a mid line for blood draws, take your own CPAP machine and a pen with your 6 foot cell phone cord. Play Diablo 3 and I'll meet you there for help with dementia or simple old age memory issues. There's a big crowd of older folks who play this game and it's easy to log into and get something done w/ just a few minutes to play. The repetition of the game is the point for memory issues, but it's fun and has seasons where you can get a new gaming experience every 3 or 4 months. Other than that you'll be bored to tears at the hospital while waiting for someone to come help you walk the halls or get up to go to the bathroom. I'd recommend getting your new heart valve, soon as possible. My experience was a great 1 and I wish you the best for your full recovery. Best thing I've done for my family in years! They'll have me for many years to come.

I am glad that you have had a positive outcome from your surgery. I had a Edwards aortic valve in Feb 2021. Before the surgery, I could comfortably swim 4 laps underwater on a single breath, now I struggle to exceed 2. It has been a live diminshing experience with constant fatigue, dizziness chest pain from the time of the surgery. I have sacked the cardiologist and regret ever consenting to the irreversible surgery. I rate my capacity at sbout 60% of my preoperative capacity.

My step mother had this 3 months ago. She had tissue valve installed with open heart surgery. She is 75, slightly overweight. For her, the first week spent at the hospital following the surgery was difficult. She has been kept intubated for about 1 day. A lot of chest pain despite medication. Weird dreams caused by the anesthetic. Difficult next weeks once back home, difficulty sleeping, difficulty finding a position to sleep, pain in the chest, back, neck, and ribs at various locations. Getting very tired from the smallest effort, even just climbing the stairs from the basement. The various hurting locations around the upper body have only started to go away after 3 months. Now 3 months after the surgery she is starting to be able to do small tasks - still without lifting anything even slightly heavy - only now she can cook and do small things around without getting very tired. The tiredness from the smallest talk is taking very long to get reduced, perhaps it takes 6 months or even more until one no longer feels tires when doing small tasks for 30 minutes or so. The other thing is she came from the hospital with her body much bigger - her body was retaining fluids a lot, despite medication. Her legs, feet, belly, everything was noticeable larger in size. This took very long to start going back to normal, but even today she is still bigger in size than before the surgery, despite now keeping a diet compared to her food before the surgery.

Had my surgery in July 2013 (aortic aneurysm/bad valve replaced) ... They've seriously got pain management perfected. I've had dental office visits that were more uncomfortable than the heart surgery experience. In fact, the only pain I experienced was very brief, when they removed the drain tubes on my 3rd day of recovery. Outside of that, its more about discomfort, than pain.

Early detection is so important with heart valve issues -- as with so many other diseases. My mother was told she had an aortic valve that was 95% closed, when she was 92 years old. Why wasn't she told this when her valve was 50% closed and much younger? Of course, open-heart surgery was out of the question at 92; so was a transcatheter. A year later she passed. Had the replacement been done earlier she could have lived for at least another 5 years.

Nine years later I had my Aortic valve replaced again and then 2 years after that I had to have it replaced again. I was also diagnosed with lung cancer 4 days before the surgery date. I had a pacemaker put in 5 days after surgery. People tell me I'm lucky because the cancer was found early in a scan for the heart. @@sharonevans1608 it's amazing what that can do. these. Days. But I'm not sure if I could go through it all again. I hope replace surgery isn't as bad. I am 58 in a month with symptomatic severe aortic stenosis. I decided against the TAVR as the Cardiothoracic Surgeon told me the TAVR would only last 10 years, and then I would still need to have the open heart done. At almost 70 and most likely on Medicare, I changed my mind and am having open heart. Surgeon told me , unless I get an infection of my heart at the valve site, the open heart is a one and done procedure. Follow up is just echocardiograms. No more invasive poking and prodding.

There is a 5% chance that some thing bad might happen in the future, but a 95% Chance that I will live a long normal live. why do I focus on the bad 5% so much!!!

Hi Salvatore, maybe you focus on the bad because it's your heart, a vital organ. I think a lot of people feel the same but are too afraid of what people would think. Hopefully you will live a long and happy life without any trouble. I know your INR is always going to be something that needs to be focused on but if it is steady and in the range it needs to be then try to enjoy life more. Concentrate on what you can do now and not what might happen in the future. Chances are you will be fine. All the best.

Hi Salvatore , I’m having 2 mechanical valves replaced this January. I’m scared of stroke and infection to. Hey, we’ve been through a lot. It’s normal to be scared but I think you and I are letting it consume us. I don’t know how to make it stop.not makes me fearful for my surgery.

What is the survival rate fot mitral valve replacement? I heard prognosis is less than ten years. Any survivors out there? I have a surgery in a month. I heard surgery is good but long term prognosis is poor.

Am 20 and was born with bicuspid aortic valve too. I had my surgery on 1st September in India. I was fine until I discovered symptoms like high blood pressure, palpitations and lower back pain. Now, am 1 month away from surgery and due to the past few days I’ve had nosebleed that occurs more frequently than normal person. If you’re opting for a surgery be sure to sort out things very clearly with your doctor. For the younger patient mechanical valve tends to last longer than biological valve. The only cons with mechanical valve is you will be hearing audible clicking sound and have to go with blood thinning medication for the rest of the life to prevent blood clots. But it’s still better than having re-operation. In my experience having to stay at the ICU is worst part of my life. It’s more about discomfort due to the tubes inserted in your body. And also you will have sleepless nights because nurses keeps you waking up for medication. Wishing you luck for the surgery if you’re having one. Above all remain calm. ✌️

How long is the procedure? My dad may have to have a "cow" valve put in? Is this true? Also, I've heard that they might have to go to the bottom? Can anyone shed some light on this situation?
@gary63693
@gary63693 6 жыл бұрын
my valve was done in like 3- 5 hours, but you are asleep anyway. There are 3 different valves really. cow, pig or mechanical. Having the cow or pig valves means he won't need to take the drug like warfarin for the rest of his life. If he had a mechanical (like mine a week ago) then you would have to take warfarin for the rest of your life. Which means, the clotting of the blood needs to be tested on a regular basis. I hope i been been somewhat helpful. Good luck

ty my dad is going to have the cow. however they are going to have two choices one to put the valve in or the other to open his chest ,why?
@gary63693
@gary63693 6 жыл бұрын
You mean there are 2 choices to have it done? I had my chest opened myself, but it all depends on the age of your dad and state of health i guess. If there is more of a risk one way, then they may opt to choose the other one
