Life After Steel in the UK's Most Polluted Town: Rule Britannia

In March 2016 the steelworks in Port Talbot, South Wales, were threatened with closure. 700 people were made immediately redundant and reports suggested another 15,000 jobs, in a town of just 45,000, could be affected. Port Talbot was set to become a ghost town.
In the midst of the uncertainty and limbo, a father of four Nigel Hunt - who had already lost his steelworker job of 10 years - begins building a new future with a colourful start-up business, in the most polluted city in the UK. With no investment, or disposable income, the stakes are high but some unexpected turns lead Nigel to a new path, away from the fire and furnace, which he never could have dreamed of.

can't understand anything they are saying, having CC available in English would be helpful. Here is the summary for everyone else that can't understand whatever language they are speaking: A guy starts selling T-Shirts. And, I have no idea how the Steel Industry, nor pollution is related to that, seems to be a very misleading title.

Vice, you need subtitles for these people as well, not just for people of color. It's ridiculous that you have subtitles for POC that speak English clearly and fluently, but not for these people who are actually difficult to understand.

My brother was layed off from the steel works! He fell into deep depression and being put on alot of medication! To top it all his failed relationship broke his heart!! He took his life 3 years later at the of of 27!I was on a training scheme with LINK in Swansea when I met Nigel, lovely lad he was. Its quite ironic he's ended up in the clothing buisness, because like myself he was massively into the football casuals scene and loved his clobber with a passion as much as myself, We were both 18 at the time. Haven't seen him for years!In the short time I knew him he was a very motivated inspirational young man with a great passion and drive for his future! Congratulations Nige on being elected for Plaid Cymru! Glad you are doing so well with the shop in Port Talbot along with Pancho and your brand San Portablo! Best wishes mate and I hope the future is good to you! Keep flying mate!!!!All the best Wayne X ps by the way I think Nigel invented the word LUSH! He was always using it😊lol!

I work at a steel mill here in the US for a major company. I know how these workers feel. This is their livelihoods. Steel making is a hard, dirty and dangerous job. It’s also unpredictable because when consumer spending is down, orders for steel goes down which means potential layoffs or hours cut. We are especially dependent on the auto industry as they are our major customers. The rust belt of the United States has been hard hit for decades. Steel mills, auto plants, coal mines. It’s no wonder drug abuse is high in the rust belt here. This place reminds me of where I’m from minus the mountains. Wish you guys the best.

Successive governments have failed Port Talbot! Without the steelworks the city and the wider Swansea Bay Area. Would see untold economic and social deprivation, far beyond anything Wales has seen. To say people need to go away and find jobs, fails to understand the job market in Wales. Steel and coal manufacturing played and plays an important part economically. And importantly culturally to the point where it's part of the beating heart of Wales, its soul. The steel workers deserve our respect, it's a matter of survival.

Then give them (the workers) the states money (taxpayers money) directly. If you artificially keep an industry afloat even though it can´t compete, you are just giving it taxpayer money. Why then have some random executive skim half of that welfare off the top and into his swiss account, if you want welfare do it right.
@grizcuz

Successive governments haven't just failed Port Talbot or South Wales or even Wales. They've failed everywhere in the UK that isn't London or their wealthy friends. It's a government by the rich, for the rich.

The world is fucked man, at least in regards to heavy industry. If all the competition has already moved to overseas production then there is simply no way a company can afford to keep their's domestic while paying high taxes, facing strict regulation, and high wages.

Ae Norist But when part of the problem, if not all of it, is state subsidised Chinese steel flooding and undercutting the market, then it's far from a level playing field. If the UK government helps keep Port Talbot steel works afloat then it would only be replicating what other countries do.

Nigel Hunt is as real as it gets, refreshing to see decent journalism by Vice. Nothing played up to the camera, this guy is a great ambassador for the town. He should be mayor. He is for the people of Port Talbot and deserves his pension for his service and commitment. Not like the other crook politicians in it for them selves. Well done Vice you picked the right guy to nightlight the plight of the Steelworkers. I myself am from the town, my father having worked at the plant as a rigger. I know first hand that Nigel's case was unfair dismissal. Bullying in the work place should not be tolerated or brushed under the carpet.

Industry is booming here in South Carolina (Charleston). Unemployment is sub 4% at the time of this post. The 'factory' work of which I am employed in is considered high tech manufacturing with the latest machining equipment (I work on a brand new 6 spindle index turning machine, touch screen interface ... it's slick). I make decent money and have excellent benefits (health, dental, vision, disability, matching 401k, the list goes on). There are no unions here. My work environment is clean, safe, and climate controlled. So yeah, times are changing.

This is much like the story of a small town in England called Corby. The British Steel steelworks were everything in that town. My dad worked there, my mum worked there. My dad was an electrician for British Steel too. He fell from a crane one day and broke his leg. He ended up leaving to become a cab driver and shortly after that the steelworks were closed down. That town went to rack and ruin after that. It was practically a ghost town. Nothing for kids to do but steal cars and joyride. Our town was the teenage pregnancy capital of Europe in those days.

Making it very hard to just get the job done, like those old factories if there wasn't so much regulation then startups could buy this wasteland a build cheap structures. bt the business tax rates on premises is crazy. Britain could be great we just need real capitalism / free market, its not so free is the problem.
