I am Australian and I lived and worked in the West Bank in 2004. Oppression and daily humiliation was inflicted on Palestinians . Nevertheless the Palestinian people are the most courageous, resilient,warm, hospitable, friendly people I have ever had the privilege to know.

We failed the Palestinians for so long. Not intentionally. Only because the whole world felt sorry for the Israelis and what they had to endure during the holocaust. Israel, instead of learning empathy and compassion, hardened their hearts and has continued to play the 'victim' card, venting all their bitterness, hatred and inhumanity on the innocent Palestinians. I experienced a little of this many years ago when things werent as harsh. Being questioned by Israeli soliders about my then fiance - a palestinian muslim, who i was sat with in a park in Jerusalem on a sunny afternoon - if i was going to marry him, why, just generally being ars*holes. I put more trust in my British passport at that time than i should have, i wasnt very coopertative and very indignant! Airport departures were always eventful - where have you been staying? Named an Arab village and that was it!! Whisked away, stripped searched (to my underwear) questioned. I knew even so I had it easy. And yet despite everything I knew wanted to live in the village or East Jerusalem where they had previously lived. I felt like I belonged.
