Note: We are continuing to work on adding more to the game, improving all of the things mentioned in the video (+ more of course), and general bug fixes leading into Early Access! We just want to show you all where we started, what we're working on, and where we're hoping to head 💜 We anticipate that the game will be in Early Access for at least 12 months. This time is subject to change as we continue to work on development and receive feedback from our Early Access players!

It's okay, we understand what pre-alpha means and I personally don't even expect this one being released within the next two years. That's why we are sharing you our concerns especially about the graphical style. (Before the developers misunderstand this as they frequently do: no it doesn't mean we'd want a graphic which makes the latest gpu-s begging for their lives.)

I'm absolutely glad you guys are talking about this, because the graphical style and how it looks a little weird is a very frequent topic among players and there have been a lot of suggestions about it. Some of the life sim players simply haven't followed the news about Life by You because they believe it's not a game for them. And it's not just about the characters, it's about animations, internal lighting and modeling of some objects... There's a feeling that there are still a lot of placeholders. It's really important for the team to be transparent about the direction taking to calm our hearts or just get us to accept some of the aspects that will exist in the final version.

I think the problem most people have already gets addressed in the first minute; when Richard is talking about how the "art style is not anything specific". I can't understand how an art director can agree on that. You need a style, you need a vision, you need direction. All of that, combined with a bloom usage 2014 would be proud of and a color palette that goes from cartoony to moody in the space of two assets, create this outdated look. You're a brand new studio, working on their first game so I assume everyone I'm speaking for most when I say we're not expecting AAA graphics, animation, lighting etc. But especially then, art direction is way more important. You have hopes of it going to be heavily modded, sure, but you also need to sell a base game. Some potential customers won't even play with mods. People aren't going to spend hours on a game that is not aesthetically pleasing. And this is coming from someone who actually wants to try this game. But at the same time I'm also pretty sure I wont play it as much until some great graphical mods and updates release.
@98Zai
@98Zai Жыл бұрын
It really doesn't matter which artstyle they choose, some people are going to hate it and some will love it. This is a matter of taste, you can't say "it looks outdated" in the same breath as "it has no style"! I think if the idea is to be perfectly neutral, logically that would attract the most people.
@notcontentwithlosing
@notcontentwithlosing Жыл бұрын
@@98Zai no, unfortunately that's not usually how it works, from a psychological pov. You'd want a clear artstyle and ofcourse that's going to divide, but it's also going to attract a lot of people who will judge by the cover because its objectively more pleasing to look at. And ofcourse I can say it looks dated. Because like 10 years ago there were so many AA developers that did the same thing because of budget constraints, a trend that has mostly died off.
@98Zai
@98Zai Жыл бұрын
@@notcontentwithlosing Well, then it has a "10 years ago on a budget"- style, although I don't see it. Very few things are "objectively more pleasing". Even a sunny day makes a lot of people depressed. You're absolutely entitled to try get the devs to listen to you, they're asking for input. My input is "this is fine" and "I'm gonna mod in some 70's futuristic furniture".
@heatherofmorans

@notcontentwithlosing
@notcontentwithlosing Жыл бұрын
 @98Zai It's not so much a matter of personal opinion, honestly. And I used that in my original post, so I'm sorry for any confusion it may have caused. Like I said, I'm looking at it from a psychological standpoint. The stronger an image is, the more it'll provoke a reaction, whether it's good or bad. Because that's the thing you want to achieve; attention. And the art style this game currently possesses is not consistent, and that's why people feel weird about it. Because assets and technical features DO look objectively good; lighting, textures, models, etc, look at least decent for a 2023 open world game. But the problem is implementation; some things have pastel colors, some things are bright, humans have realistic clothing, but then a cartoon-ish face. And that just takes away from consistency and how strong the image can be. It makes it all way more dull. Another factor is that this inconsistency makes for an aesthetic that resembles that of 5 dollar indie games that have been thrown together with random Unity assets. These games are usually trash and there's a big chance people will subconsciously make these connections when they see LBY screenshots in the Steam Store. They have the same problem with their box art and accompanying marketing design by the way; it doesn't look bad on the surface but it would've been more in place in 2015. There's a reason design comes in trends, and they're not really using them to their advantage. Which is unfortunate to say the least. These were observations I make, being a designer, opinions not interjected this time. Look, I love that you like the graphics, or at least won't be bothered by them too much, but I just don't assume that it will count for the majority of people. And I'm sad to say that as well, because this looks like it's shaping up to be a great game if they can deliver on all the promises. In the end, we both want to build retrofuturistic homes, lol.

Sorry for mistakes, i am not a native speaker^^ So here are my thoughts on the graphics matter: To me personally the graphics look not so appealing - yet 😉 I know the game is in development and not finished. It has over a year time to improve on these things like graphics and animation. But what concerns me is when they said in the video, that they wanted no "specific" style. In my opinion the game NEEDS a style, a direction. It gives the game uniqueness, breathes life into the world and lets it stand apart from other games. I understand that they want us to make the game ours entirely and what we want it to be and I personally love mods too - but there will sure be players that just want to play the game and not spending hours modding so that they are satisfied with the look. That is the job of the company, not the modders in the first place. We ourselves can modify the game to our liking, but it needs a solid foundation. And in these times the graphics is equally important than the gameplay and the two should go hand in hand. So I hope they will think about their own style for the game. Because I am excited like all the others and believe it will become a great game 😊

I agree, not having an art style is ridiculous. The main reason why Sims 4 is doing so well, despite having awful gameplay (unless you have billions of mods and all the packs), is because the game itself is very beautiful. Most people will play a beautiful game that lacks gameplay over an ugly game that has everything they want, sounds silly, but this is the reality.

Things I appreciate is that the facial structure is way more versatile and not too rigid, which is usually the problem with sliders. So it's nice to see the true range here. Allowing the creation of completely different facial structures and even unrealistic structures is great. The fact that hair color can be chosen from the entire color spectrum and separate. It's good to know more hair textures and styles are being added, hopefully it will cover a much broader range than just "straight hair." The arms are the number one problem with the character creator, imo, because the rest is just art and texture and lighting polish. I think this is a result of height sliders and making characters of different sizes. But there needs to be some sort of programming in the RNG character creator to prevent the t-rex arm problem. If Torso and Legs are X length then Arms can only be a minimum of Y length. The player should be able to stretch or shrink the length outside of that if they choose, but for random characters having some sort of limit to prevent it would go a long way. Some of the lighting looks great, such as the fire, and other times it's still looking very harsh such as the sunlight. White objects like the shelves, window frames, and couch appear to be missing texture and shadows but this could be a result of the lights.

@@Shayoni They commented on Twitter, I believe, that this is a result of random character generation and the height sliders / proportions adjustments. Other games have height sliders and it's not an issue, so I think it's just something in the programming that needs to be adjusted to help prevented. Of course, I'm not a programmer, so I could be wrong. And those games are all MMOs where your characters don't need to interact with external objects in the game like counters and stoves in a realistic way.

I think the lighting plays a big part in the way it looks in the concept art vs the actual model. Realistic lighting is fine, but I think utilizing a form of stylization, to push the realistic lighting into a more idealistic realm, would be good. Like when an artist renders something "realistically" they take liberties to make it more appealing. Even in film they do this. Real life isn't that aesthetic.

My first thought when I saw the game was that it looks like there is no art style, like IMVU, and I find it disheartening that this was intentional. I feel like it's a misunderstanding of what older life simulation players want in terms aesthetics. Older players like charm in their games too and that doesn't stop just because they're older. A game needs an art style/art direction otherwise it looks lifeless, flat, and dated. I also feel like the darker skinned characters have a very glossy skin texture that's, to me, unflattering and unrealistic. It also feels like despite there being different races, everyone has same face syndrome and look blended together. I'm still excited to play this game in September and respect the work evyone has put in to the game, I just think the design is a mistep.

I want to have my sims 2 experience again where i made my own towns, people, houses, and had multiple families at ones and getting to choose what household to play for the day. I've never been the type to play 1 or 2 people or a singular house while overly micromanaging their lives. I noticed in some of the videos you show, the faces become distorted when using sliders especially when creating 'cartoon' proportions. The only other major visual issue I have is the hair looking low poly, sometimes stringy and not having enough detail. I want to like this game but avatar/human creation is a massive love of mine and I don't see this character creator being something I would enjoy using as the human's don't look polished enough just yet, if this gets changed before launch then I think I would consider getting it as the rest of the game looks amazing. None of this is any hate, I just wanted to provide feedback because this game looks so promising. Yh so many people forget this game will be releasing in early access and they're expecting a fully finished game in september. But if anyone has played anything in early access before, especially more indie games, the graphics and animations are never perfect straight away - there's often a massive graphical overhaul in a later update. This isn't a bad thing, it's what you expect signing up for early access because the point is that you're supporting the game through it's development. I can't wait to get my hands on this game!

The characters are too important to be look good it would be nice to dedicate more resources to this or to expand the dev team a bit more for character creator hairstyles. Hope we can create 12 years old characters too. Also Neural physics for hairstyles from NVIDIA could be used to make the hairstyles fully animated and fully realistic without decrease in performance it’s a new technology but there is some older physics engines too like Havok and PhysX and Tress FX. I’m sure everyone would love something like this being implemented into the game it would make such a difference overall. Im 53, looking for a quieter life now haha. The characters, i dont like them, sorry for being honest but they are as ive always referred to as "clumpy". They look hard, the females dont look feminine at all and none of the hair moves. They just look solid. I know they won't be perfect, i dont expect them to be but to me these characters, humans, look like they belong in games i was playing 10 or 15 years ago. They need softening up a little. I have other worries too but im hoping 🤞 they get sorted out before early access. I'll definitely be playing that day but i think my fingers will be crossed as i do.

@@MugshotMidge Well, I agree a lot of it is harsh, but I certainly get the general complaints, it does just remind me of something I'd see on the unity game store. It IS early access, so they do have all this time to figure things out considering visuals, but I do find it weird how they advertised the game and presented it to us while it looks this way, as I feel early access is actually pretty late in a game's development. I get they did say they'd focus on gameplay first, but visuals don't need to be shorthanded; it just causes expectation for the gameplay to really carry the graphics. I saw a comment saying it's soulless, and I wouldn't say it's soulless, I think the team is very intent on doing well with this game and are excited to finish it, but I of course hope for it to be good. All things considered, an empty-but-pretty game like the Sims 4 cannot beat a game that IS fulfilling, but this game alone should reach it's full potential, and I'd hate to speak about it like I'm already copping out. It's 3 am for me btw so my comment is pretty jumbled.

After seeing more character faces and how the sliders work, I'm pretty happy with how their faces look in their neutral expressions. I don't want photo realistic OR cartoony - I think this is a happy medium. Of course they could be improved depending on what the community thinks, and after seeing how expressions work. One thing I'm worried about is the appearance of randomly generated agents, thanks to all the sliders there is a possibility of them all looking like weirdos.. so this needs to be very tightly controlled. Otherwise I'm feeling pretty at ease with how it's looking right now! That said, I'm not playing these kinds of games to look at beautiful dolls. I assume those who are will be modding the faces anyway like they do in the sims. They all seem to want a different type of doll so it's clearly impossible to cater to all of them.

I love the depth of customization options! It's definitely giving us more ways to achieve what we can do with our Youmans. Between hyper realistic and cartoony style, I recommend we go center but a bit leaning on the cartoony. Remember when the Sonic movie trailer was released and they got backlash because Sonic looked ugly? I guess that is where we are at right now. A little dash of cartoonish style won't hurt, just like what they did to Sonic in the movie, and making it more polished looking, will seal the deal for me, but yeah already pre-ordered so I'm ready to play by September whatever we have by then. Also, I agree with other commenters: Lores! At least give us like a few set of families or roomies which will have their own stories. It can work as a template on how we will interact with them with our own Youmans. I hope the team also showcase in the next videos the possibility to create villages like the ones we can see mostly in Europe or if we can even create informal settler type of compounds that is commonly found in developing countries, and not just suburban style of residential places seen in the developed nations, because not everyone starts rich and got amazing homes in their lives in the real world. In that sense we can absolutely play the game realistically. :)

Character customisation is looking better than I was expecting. It's a lot of fun making characters that look like real life people & celebrities. I'm a big fan of Random. I really hope when the game generates new people to populate the town you don't make the mistake that happened with The Sims 3 where everyone had the same 'Pudding face' (Which was fixable only by using a well known mod). Of course that presents challenges in avoiding creating a bunch of monsters but I'm sure the auto character randomisation generator can be made to use set 'safe' ranges for each slider, and maybe those ranges could be different if you want to represent different cultures. Also it's similiar thing with Hair/Clothes. You don't want a population generated that ends up looking like some Cyberpunk game. It's fine to let the user change someones hair to be a pink mohican, but perhaps if should be rare for auto generated characters, and also you don't see many dark skinned people with blond hair and blue eyes of course. I also really hope that there is good Genetics generation. By that I mean If and when in the future when offspring are added to the game that those offspring inherit looks from parents properly. I'm not an expert in the details of what facial features make a male look different to a female and I imagine there are some challenges with what 'parts' of the face/body can be handed down realistically without making a girl look like her father LOL. Also those parts that are inherited should be allow a random variation of say +/- 10% or something on the slider scale. Of course In reality genetics is a far more advanced topic. The Mod I mentioned before also had a thing called 'Advanced Genetics' that did a pretty good job of handling this (Thankyou Twallan). Sorry to be long winded.

Reading the comments, I feel that many people don't understand the current stage of development the game is in. It hasn't even been released in early access, and there's still a long way to go before the final version. We need to start appreciating the game within the context of its development. It's like being shown the structure of a house that's obviously unfinished, lacking doors, windows, or paint, so it won't look pretty. I do think some of the lights are a little too strong, but that's my only real concern with how the game looks so far. I am curious as to how moddable the visuals of the game will be. In The Sims 3, I once downloaded a mod that made the characters look better in the creator, but did little to improve how they looked in the world. I suspect this is because characters were "scaled down" from creator to world, to make sure the game would still run properly. So long as this isn't the case for LBY, I'm happy.

The graphics is one of the things need to polish more in my book. It's too glaring and contrast for me, especially in the environment. You can see the light differences between character creation and in-game world, in the CC it was soft but in the world it was too shinny and make all textures popped out. Maybe it's just a personal preference, but I think it just need to "soften" it a bit more, less shinny hair or maybe have a ENB? I'm down to have customizable ENB because to each of their own. Speaking of which, is there a possibility to create personal world like Sims 3 has? I mean, I don't mind to have Sims2 custom world but "semi-open" would help game performance i.e. travelling to other parts outside the "costal town" to "big city" has loading screen in between?

I like how the game is improving more and more, btw I’m just wondering if there will be an option to slow a bit the time, I mean, 1 minute in one second I think it’s too fast 😬

First of all for giving us so much insight in your development!! Absolutely love this. I must agree tho. Not going for a cohesive ast style that stands out and is recognizable is also a fault in my eyes. Even if the gameplay is super duper important, so are aesthetics to make a game enjoyable. Please don't lean to heavy on future-modders for there are for sure players who don't want to mess with too many mods, if any at all. Big wow for the ability to shape a face so much. Weight-painting is hell. I admire your work! I also appreciate that you guys also have in mind to give lots of room for individuality. I'm excited to see what this will lead to or if the Same-Face-Syndrome also will be a problem here 🙈 Now one of the things that bugs me the most is hair I must say... To be honest I believe giving the hair more the look of single hair/strands makes it look uncanny-valley 🙈I'm afraid you're on a wrong route there. I suggest looking at the own concept art that you've shown before!! The hair looked a little more like a clay-style but more lively with strands consisting not of individual hair but just kinda one "chunk" of hair :D I think that would help the overall look of a human a lot. I really appreciate that you are working on synchronizing the brows with the hair. I love having slightly different colours of eyebrows than the hair colour but it's so much better when the eyebrows are in sync first 💕

I’m so disappointed. I think if they had said: “Yeah we know it looks bad, but everything is WIP and we’re going to do a major overhaul,” I would have had more confidence. Instead they’re talking about the way the characters look like it was an ACTUAL design choice, like they think it just needs polishing. No, sliders are not the reason your characters look bad. Your characters looking bad are the reason your characters look bad. They were clearly designed by someone who doesn’t understand anatomy. Sliders don’t explain why every character you’ve ever shown has arms that are way too short. Everything about this feels like ‘programmer art.’ Like they just threw things in to have visuals. All of their discussion about the art came back to ‘customize this, customize that’ and nothing about an actual artistic vision or style.

"Programmer art" yes!! The graphics 100% feel like they were just made by programmers instead of a dedicated art team that gives direction on lighting, UI, and character modeling. It's giving PS2 graphics

And the objects are also bad. They don't have any ambient occlusion texture. The windows glow like a neon light! People aren't exaggerating when they say they look like they came out of a Unity asset store. I'm trying to believe these are placeholder.

This looks great! I can't wait to see it in early access. However, I noticed many people pointing out the art style for the humans are not up to par compared to the environment art style. Maybe these suggestions might help? As explained the "eyes are the windows to the soul". The eyes bring life to the humans. I noticed that they look very similar to Sims 3 eyes. However it kind of clashes with the art style of the rest of the face. The pupils are very big and the irises only have 1 colour (That I can see). Perhaps it's better to add rings to the eyes and have a way to adjust the size of the pupils for more details so the eyes can match the rest of the face. Or vice versa. Stylize slightly by decreasing the amount of creases on the face (aside from the wrinkle slider), have options for smoother lines on the face (I noticed that sometimes adjusting the sliders for the chin/jaw would cause it to look more jagged). Have more saturation in the skin tone. I like the colour on the nose on some of the humans I see. Contrast the shadows and light areas more. From the looks of it, he rest of the body slider options are fine, but the showcase of the humans can be improved. I suggest slightly exaggerated body shapes. I see you all stuck to some very realistic shapes and that is nice. Some people think it looks so slightly odd because they like the look of some stylized body shapes. Imitate this by making the legs longer (especially the lower half of the legs) and extending out the shoulders out. Maybe adjust the shoulder sliders so the shoulders look sharper and less sloped down. Please let me know if you want me to elaborate or explain certain parts if they are unclear. Thank you for reading and you can all do it. Don't be worried if you have to delay! I completely understand that sometimes deadlines cannot be met. Remember, your health is worth more than working on this project.

I seriously can't wait for this game, it looks so good!! It's really amazing that you guys are being so open about the development process, I know a lot of people have expressed concerns about the look of the game, so being able to see how you approach working on it and what kind of things you want to improve is really great. Personally, I like how the game looks already, and I'm really, really excited about the amount of customization already available, and the fact that we as players can add to that. I'm very into controlling every single possible thing in a life sim, so everything that you've shown we can do makes me really happy. You're doing some great work, I'm always so excited whenever you post updates! I can already tell I'm gonna spend so many hours on this game!

They are calling the characters “humans” but there isn’t anything really human about how they look or behave. They lack charm and I can’t imagine engaging with them or caring about them as I did in other sims games. The charm of the characters in Sims 1 and 2, their quirkiness, unexpectedness and humour is what has kept me playing those games for more than 20 years. NOTHING is more important in a human sim game than unique and engaging characters!
