BOOK: The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing by Marie Kondo amzn.to/1OQVASk
Decluttering/ Organizing Tips - The KonMari Method Overview
DECLUTTER ALL AT ONCE
o Clean/organize everything at once vs in small increments. When you do it at once there will be a dramatic difference that you will feel and it will be life changing
o This will end the cycle of clutter
o I think the perfect time to do this is if you’re moving or over a long weekend
DISCARDING
o Most important aspect of tiding is discarding. More stuff is more stress in our lives and the reason things constantly get messy is because we have too much stuff
TIDY BY CATEGORY vs by room/area
o The reason for this is that we have one type of item in multiple locations and if you miss items you will not get everything repeat the same patterns
o Her categories are: clothes, books, papers, komono (miscellaneous), mementos
HOW TO DISCARD
o Start the process by gathering every item from category you own and put it into a big pile
o Only keep items that spark joy - hold it and feel your reaction to it
HOW TO ORGANIZE - Clothing Organization
o Most clothing should be folded versus hung up - it saves space and also forces you to have more interaction with each item
o How to fold clothes:
• Fold lengthwise towards center to make a long rectangle
• Fold the short ends together and continue until the height matches the drawer height
• Instead of storing them on top of each other, stack them! This way you can see every item and it saves space
o Hanging items
• Hang items in same category side by side, dress section, jacket section, etc
• Heavy items on left going to lighter items on the right
• Heavy means most length and heavier fabrics and dark in color
o Seasonal clothes
• She doesn’t believe in seasonal clothes - all items should be kept out. This prevents hoarding clothes
Top I’m wearing - American Apparel
Leggings - Lululemon
Any other questions please ask in the comments :)
Let me know if you’d like me to organize other categories of items from the book!

First...you husband is a riot. Second...I agree with doing everything at once I had a pretty traumatic experience over the winter involving some tenants who lived in the house behind mine along with a really terrible job. Just recently I took 3 days and cleaned my house from top to bottom every closet every drawer my garage my storage closet everything I rearranged cleaned out and throw things away and I cannot explain to you how good my mental state has become. Third...I am SO EXCITED for your up coming videos.

I love this book. I got it for Christmas and read it, and it CHANGED MY LIFE. Now, whenever I'm cleaning anything, I always discard what I don't need and I'm left with a bigger space filled with the things I love. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone looking to clean their house/bedroom.

VERY good method! Another way to decipher whether or not you'd like to keep an item is to ask yourself "Does this item make me HAPPY? Screw anyone else, do YOU like it?"

Thanks, your videos help keep me motivated. I've done KonMari and love decluttering and organizing but sometimes feel down as there's so much to do. Love the ending. Tip: To help maintain my newly organized closet, and justify splashing out on new modular units/drawers etc, I bought smart new matching hangers and (transparent) clothes hanger bags - they make me look after my clothes, and well-looked after clothes help me enjoy having a tidy space for them.

I loved the video. Right after watching it, I went to my closet and drawers and made my piles of joy and no joy. The piles of no joy, will give joy to those less fortunate and the joy piles were hung up as you described and folded neatly in drawers. I would like to know how to organize my creams, serums, toners, cleansers, etc. Right now I am a mess with some creams here and there. You are so great at making life smooth and uncluttered. Thank you so much. Love the endings.

I like how you described that it didn't come naturally (at first) to decide if it brought you joy. I have read the book and haven't purged my clothing because I was a little skeptical about the joy thing. I liked how you video taped your whole process and speeded it up. I like your attituded and length of tips.

your channel is really useful as these techniques really work! most of us simply have too much stuff period. I realized I was living in an impossible dream. I bought things because they were there, on sale, clearance, close outs etc., What I failed to realize was that my lifestyle does not support an extensive wardrobe. I no longer need so many things. I was also holding on to the past through my possessions. I was owned by my stuff you see. Anyway I gave it all away. It was hard. When I remember some of it I think I went off my rocker a bit but still overall no regrets! It no longer makes sense to house things I haven't used and probably never will, things that others need, are looking for. I like knowing that I am helping orhers in a real way! Thank You for such a colourful, fun and again useful channel!

I'm 2 months "new" to this. I found trying to do it all at once stressed & overwhelmed me. I decided to go through my clothes by season. Since I started in Spring, I only went through all that -sorting by throw away, donate & sale. Then I laid out all I had left & started putting outfits together. Whatever didn't go together, I asked the minimalism questions-do I love, need, how often, etc 😊

I have not read the book yet but I started diving into decluttering on my own a few years ago. I currently live with my boyfriend at his parent's house, and I share his bedroom with him. So not only have I been going through all my stuff (mostly in storage boxes), but I've been helping my boyfriend too. It's been challenging keeping a balance of our stuff in his room without it looking cluttered, but I'm grateful for this situation because it has taught us a lot about organization. We're planning on living in a Tiny House too....so I'd say organization skills are vital! I am also big on writing daily lists. xD

Your videos are great, I love the funny endings. I've seen several videos about organizing clothes that don't include the discarding part and, to me, that's the most important part. In fact some of them just mean bringing in more clutter in the way of plastic boxes and more hangers. Your method truly minimizes and ends with a light airy closet with only the clothes you really like and need!

I tried the KonMari, it lasted about 15 min. Doing everything at once became too overwhelming. However tackling by category did work as far as de-cluttering. I have used in the past the " If I haven't used it within a year" method and that has always been a tried and true method of letting an item go with less anxiety. When I do my semi-annual clean out I make 3 piles. Keep-Donate-Trash. I usually start with clothes in my clean out, either because of weight fluctuations or seasonal. Food items are easy if you think like a store "ROTATE, ROTATE, ROTATE" put just bought items to the back and pull forward items so nothing is left to expire on the shelf or in the fridge/freezer. I love to recycle or better yet up-cycle items that I no longer use for it's intended purpose this lessens my footprint and can cause the creative juices to flow. When I can't think of an new use it goes into 1 of the first 3 piles I mentioned. -Hope this helps or is an inspiration to some clutter bugs out there. Thx, Heather

I think I can get on board with a lot of the ideas in the book, but the whole idea of "does this clothing bring me joy" is hard for me to understand. Most of my clothing doesn't "bring me joy". It's just there and I wear it and thats the end of it

Joy could be, when you wear it does it make you feel good? Are you comfortable? Confident? Feeling nice and well kept? Do you feel good wearing it or is it just okay and something to wear? Is it just 'meh'?

Thanks for showing us how to fold--i still haven't quite got the hang of it yet so they are all uniform in the drawer, but at least clothes are done. Books are done. I know Marie says to do one category at a time, but am doing papers in bedroom and komodo/misc stuff in kitchen after I had to pull it all out for the new counters anyway. Step by step, it does feel good to release the surplus and have "breathing room." Enjoy your videos--will make some DIY cleaning products soon, and also appreciate the tip about no vinegar on granite.

I read this book and applied the method over the summer this year. I got really in to minimalism for a brief period of time so I really got rid of a LOT of stuff. It felt great and I really liked clearing everything out; however, I haven't been able to stop from accumulating more stuff, like the book says will happen. I've gotten off the minimalism band wagon but I still really like the concept of it all. Honestly, the hardest thing for me to get rid of wasn't my makeup or clothing or books, it was my nail polishes!!! I really should have kept most of them, but I wanted to really embrace minimalism. I still regret giving them all away! Anyhoo, I'd love to see a series of you doing each step! Maybe it'll motivate me to continue will minimalism!
