I have terrible news for the many of you saying that it is possible to fully sterilize a sponge by microwaving it: www.nytimes.com/2017/08/04/science/sponges-bacteria-microwaving-cleaning.html (That said, sponges do not generally transmit diseases; I am just a bit ... irrational on this front.) Also if you like learning life hacks from Sarah as much as I do, you'll love her videos about art history and practice: kzfaq.info -John

In my experience, if you allow the dish sponge to dry completely you prolong it's life by increasing the amount of time before stink sets in... This may be easier for single people who may not have a full sink of dishes to wash every day... Also, once a sponge is past it's usefulness in the kitchen, I usually get some more use out of it in the bathroom... Full disclosure, I am not in the least concerned with bacteria and never have been... Thanks to the US Military, I had to spend most of my 20s exposing myself to as much yuck as possible to rebuild my immune system...

A couple of years ago, I overheard my husband talking with a friend from the other room. They were a few drinks in, and in his adorable, slightly slurred voice, he said, "my best life hack is to marry my wife. But you can't do that, so just do the best you can." Two Things: 1.) Watching John continuously talk about his love and admiration for his wife never ceases to be so genuinely sweet and refreshing in a culture that still has a running joke of treating wives like nuisances they expect to take care of their husbands. It’s so beautiful to see a marriage as a partnership that you grow and learn from together. Thank you for sharing that with us. 2.) I never noticed this before but John puts an uncomfortable amount of air quotes for single quotation 😂

its been almost (and apparently, only) a year since ive seen this video for the first time and id like to extend a thank you to sarah (and john for sharing her wisdom) for the knowledge of the double loop. i have always tied shoelaces just fine, but they always, always come undone, and since i have very bad joints, my wonderful friends have had to assist me in tying them when we're walking between locations because i am not bending over to tie my shoes until i am certain i dont have to stand again for a good while. that life hack has literally been lifechanging, not only because my shoes stop coming undone (even though i know i tied them right why are they LOOSE-) but also because i no longer have to feel like a little kid having my shoes tied by someone else because i dont have the stamina to bend over and do it myself multiple times a day, and its helped way more than id expect. i just thought of this video while tying my shoes and i had to say thanks.

William Remsen physics/lever mechanics. It works the same way a bottle opener does. You slip the edge of your ring under the edge of the bottle cap, curl you ring finger over the cap and lift from your wrist. Depending on the tightness of the cap you may have to readjust if your finger feels like it might snap off. Also, It does tend to ruin/roughen the edge of the ring after repeated uses but a price to pay for amazement.

This!! True story: My first week of living in a student residence, one guy who had never done his own laundry in his life didn't know how to tell the difference between a washer and a dryer. He put a massive load of laundry plus a whack load of powdered detergent into a commercial dryer, turned it on the highest setting, and walked away. It was a brand new machine in a brand new residence building, and the soap fused in a hard shell around the barrel before blocking the vent. The machine was destroyed, his reputation was set for life (or at least, until the current residents moved on and into history), and people told stories of catching whiffs of burnt smell for a long, long time.

A while ago, I played my first piano recital (I'm not a pianist, but I had enough pieces together to make it work). It was wonderful, one of my proudest achievements so far. Anyway, afterwards, I had some of the printed programmes left over (of course we had printed too many), and I got this weird urge to hang it on the wall in my room... felt weird, but I decided to do so anyway, and it's been a great reminder of that moment, a reminder of something I'm proud of for those times when I don't feel too proud of what I'm currently doing. Looking back, it was this video that convinced me to hang it, so thank you (both)!

You should check out the Ian knot. There is a correct and incorrect way to loop but the Ian knot is both quicker and forces you to loop correctly, resulting in a knot that almost never falls apart. This works especially well for shoelaces that are not long enough to do a double loop.

Here's an additional dishwasher hack: separate your cutlery into same-type groups in the utensil basket. So all the spoons go in one section and the forks go in another, etc. It doesn't make any difference for cleaning, but when it comes time to put them away in the kitchen drawer, it's tons faster.

Not the dishwasher! You gotta microwave your sponges to sterilize them! But I guess regularly replacing is good advice regardless. :)
@driverjayne

Also microwaving a damp sponge (NEVER microwave a dry sponge it will catch on fire) does double duty in also loosening all the gunk on your microwave that you can then just wipe right off. But be careful, your sponge will be hot.

@@wiebkejohanna9621 You could actually submerge it in water and let it boil for a bit? But yes, this shouldn't be an alternative for replacing the sponges regularly.
@wiebkejohanna9621
@wiebkejohanna9621 5 жыл бұрын
@@JoinTheMadVender There is this paper on it and it says: Sanitation by boiling or microwave treatment has been shown to significantly reduce the bacterial load of kitchen sponges19, 21 and can therefore be regarded as a reasonable hygiene measure. However, our data showed that regularly sanitized sponges (as indicated by their users) did not contain less bacteria than uncleaned ones. Moreover, “special cleaning” even increased the relative abundance of both the Moraxella- and Chryseobacterium-affiliated OTUs (Fig. 3B). Presumably, resistant bacteria survive the sanitation process and rapidly re-colonize the released niches until reaching a similar abundance as before the treatment (Fig. 6A). This effect resembles the effect of an antibiotic therapy on the gut microbiota40, 41, and might promote the establishment of higher shares of RG2-related species in the kitchen sponges. If you want to look it up, the link is www.nature.com/articles/s41598-017-06055-9 Their conclusion was to keep the sponges as clean as possible, but change them once a week, as they probably get yucky pretty quickly. So I think you're right and cleaning and replacing them is the superior method

That decorate one really improved my quality of life with mental health issues; instead of staring at blank walls and getting lost in the *worst* of my intrusive thoughts, there are stories, oddities, and a liveliness that has saddened me as I have to move and take down all my artwork. It's gotten to the point that dating what year I made what painting has also taken on its own form of wonder like, "this feels pretentious as if I am somehow a painter worth remembering," and then I remember, "I AM," for some people. My child told me about a year ago he wants all of my tattoos preserved, and *THIS* is something I'm excited about: the journey of Quintus after Life began on a stretcher and it ended on canvas. I am sorry for ranting. I love this channel. Y'all make me feel safe in a world of terrible feelings and the people who feel them.

i have a life hack for that! i try to get all my sheets and blankets on my bed after washing them, but sometimes i dont have the energy to, so i just put my top (not fitted) sheet on the bed-it's much less effort than putting all your sheets on the bed, and the mattress stays cleaner. not the ideal situation, but it feels much better for me than a bare mattress. hope that works for you, or that you've been able to get all your sheets on since you wrote the comment!
